The band is using a full complement of Sennheiser's evolution range of microphones on vocals and back line. Front-of-house sound engineer Rob Webster Reed commented: "After trying various manufacturers we found the e840 absolutely superb on lead vocals. In a major tour environment you look for consistency in a mic, and the e840 goes out every night virtually without any EQ. It's meaty sound and impressive feedback rejection also made it the obvious choice for backing vocals." Webster Reed also added that the e840 coped extremely well with Preston's very high vocal input levels.
For miking Simon's drum kit, the specialist e901 was chosen for kick. "And for toms I went with e904s," he explains. "Their well defined pickup pattern and mic clip design lets me position the mic close-up while still giving me plenty of air in the sound."
Rob selected the Sennheiser e606 super-cardioid mic for guitars primarily for what he describes as its nice presence peak between 3 and 5kHz, and adds: "The e606 is a versatile workhorse and moves seamlessly between guitar and bass. When I first listened, it sounded pretty amazing. It had a lot more presence than the other instrument mics I've used."
After a hectic summer schedule including Robbie Williams support slots throughout Europe, October sees The Ordinary Boys back on the road again with a series of gigs covering the country from Portsmouth to Carlisle.
