Paul Arditti
UK - Artistic Director of the National Theatre, Rufus Norris, last week announced that he was appointing Paul Arditti as an associate director of the National Theatre. This is a post that has typically been held in the past by actors and directors, and is the first time it has been given to a sound designer.

The small team of associates have key influence over the artistic policy of the National Theatre, from the commissioning of work to the operation of the building. Paul's appointment reflects Rufus's high regard for the importance of sound and sound design for theatre. Rufus told the ASD: "Paul Arditti is a theatre-maker first and a sound designer second. His massive wealth of experience of theatre generally, and exacting pursuit of excellence in his chosen field, make him a terrific addition to our team. As with all our Associates, Paul will contribute to the philosophical and artistic steering of the organisation as a whole, but he will also have a particular area of focus; sound design is increasingly a hugely complex and integrated part of our theatre language. To have that voice at the table will be invaluable."

Paul Arditti is a world-renowned sound designer, whose recent work includes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, King Charles III, One Man Two Guvnors, London Road and Billy Elliot The Musical (for which he won an Olivier award and a Tony award). Paul is a founder member of The Association Of Sound Designers, launched in 2011, to provide a community, training and resources to the UK theatre sound industry, as well as to provide a mouthpiece for the industry. It has since grown to almost 500 members, and hosts regular training seminars and social events, as well as providing private discussion forums, a magazine, Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance for its members.
