UK - The theatre industry is mourning the loss of Martin McCallum (6 April 1950 - 14 January 2024), FRSA, who passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on 14 January. Former president of the Society of London Theatre and advisor to the Arts Council, McCallum was a pioneering British theatrical producer who left a long-lasting mark on the world of theatre. With a career spanning over 500 shows, McCallum’s contributions to the theatre sector were ground-breaking and transformative.

USA - Following its recent partnership with PK Sound, ACT Entertainment has set out to enhance its professional live sound division with the appointment of several new industry experts.
Included among them is Ralph Mastrangelo, who takes on the role of director of sales: live sound; as well as Richard ‘Rick’ Coleman, who will serve as outside sales representative: live sound and Joe Langholt, as product specialist: live sound. UK - Focusrite Group chairman and founder Phil Dudderidge has received the honour of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Years Honours List.
An OBE is awarded for having played a major local role in any activity, including people whose work has made them known nationally in their chosen area. In Phil’s case this commendation is in recognition of the contribution he has made to the professional audio industry over several decades.

UK - At the annual Lighting Lunch held last Monday, the ALPD took the opportunity to make an award to Kelli Zezulka, outgoing editor of the association’s magazine Focus.
Alongside teaching and design work, Kelli took over the magazine at very short notice, after the sad passing of the then editor Andy Collier. Kelli volunteered to do a few issues whilst studying for her MA. ‘A few issues’ turned into 10 years: Kelli steered Focus to its 100th edition in July this year
Now a full-time teacher of lighting, Kelli has recently written a book on the history of the Association of Lighting Designers (now ALPD) which is soon to be published. She is co-editor of Contemporary Performance Lighting, published by Bloomsbury in February this year.

UK - LSi is sad to report that Richard Pilbrow, the pioneering lighting designer and theatre consultant, passed away on 6 December, peacefully, at home, surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer, writes Rob Halliday.
Richard’s remarkable 90-year life was truly a life well lived. He took a passion for theatre developed at an early age and turned it into a career through the formation of his company, Theatre Projects, as a way of subsidising and supporting his lighting design work. In doing that, he played a large part in creating the profession of lighting designer in the UK from 1957 onwards.
The timing of this meant that Richard was perfectly placed to be selected by Laurence Olivier as the lighting designer for the opening of the National Theatre company in 1963, which put him in the right place to become the theatre consultant for the new Nation
