Bristol Old Vic has reopened following a £13m refurbishment Photo: Philip Vile
UK - Multi-disciplinary consultancy Plann and its director Jack Tilbury celebrated a third high-profile theatre opening in two years when Bristol Old Vic reopened in September following a £13m capital project.
Tilbury led the venue’s redevelopment working alongside chief executive Emma Stenning and artistic director Tom Morris. He was also a project director during the relocation of the Bush Theatre (completed in March 2017) and managed the construction of the Bridge Theatre (opened in October 2017). Architects Haworth Tompkins designed all three schemes.
Tilbury comments: "After spending 10 years in design meetings, it became apparent to me that the building industry is just not set up to cope with the unusual demands of a theatre scheme. The projects are architecturally complicated, can involve millions of pounds of high-tech specialist equipment, funding milestones can speed up or slow down the programme, and the client often wants to keep the building open and running during the works."
