UK - Tannoy's VQ Series has recently benefited from a welcome expansion to the range, maximising the potential of the product and making it a truly capable and modular high SPL sound reinforcement loudspeaker system. The newly expanded range will be given its first UK unveiling at the forthcoming PLASA show, within the innovative Red Square Audio Pavilion (more details on that to be released soon).

Initially launched last year, VQ Series is a range of loudspeakers designed for any application where precise directional control, outstanding sonic performance, and high SPLs are critical issues; such as large corporate AV systems, stadiums, large dance clubs, live concert halls, theatres, houses of worship and open-air venues. "Utilising precision engineering and design, the VQ series can produce enough power and clarity to be used individually, maintaining your building's aesthetics, unlike line array solutions," says the company.

After introducing the VQ Series with 2 full-range devices (VQ 60 and VQ 100) at last year's Prolight&Sound show in Frankfurt, Tannoy always intended to expand the range of tools available to the systems designer. This new phase of VQ product comes in the form of three new PSW horn formats and a new 15" sub module.

The three new horn formats are available in VQ MH (mid-high) enclosures which have been designed to cater for a wide range of typical applications using some industry standard dispersion patterns, namely 40 degree (conical), 60 x 40 and 90 x 50 degree (in vertical position). The modular trapezoidal cabinet of the VQ 40MH, VQ 64MH and VQ 95MH allows the system designer to create seamless and very predictable arrays which are 'tight packed' to avoid any unsightly spaces between cabinets; or alternatively they can be used singly as part of large distributed systems.

Also part of the expanded range, the new VS 15DR provides an alternative solution to the existing VQ MB (Mid-Bass) module, in this case utilising a single direct radiating 15" driver which delivers a different level of low frequency performance. While the VQ MB offers efficient LF reinforcement with its uniquely designed 2 x 12" configuration, its effective frequency response is limited to around 100Hz (hence Mid-Bass) so separate larger format subwoofer enclosures are required to augment this where desirable. The VS 15DR offers a versatile alternative solution for applications where improved subwoofer performance is required (beyond the capabilities of the VQ MB) without resorting to full scale ground-stacked subwoofer enclosures, such as in school theatres or smaller performance spaces or nightclubs where clean, crisp and punchy sound is desired without necessarily driving at very high SPLs. Multiple bass enclosures can also be flown together (coupled vertically) to improve vertical pattern control at low frequencies.

Finally, to complete the expanded VQ Series, 2 new VQ DF 'down-firing' enclosures with 40x40 and 60x40 degree dispersion patterns have been introduced, to accompany the existing VQ 85DF and further expand the range of tools available within the VQ Series. Both passive and VNET (active, onboard DSP, networkable) versions of all of these new VQ Series products are available, to suit the requirements of any application.

With the addition of these new VQ products along with the relevant flying hardware, it is now possible to design and install large scale tightly packed clustered configurations comprising of multiple MH horns, bass enclosures and down-firing elements - ideal for high SPL, long throw applications such as large sports arenas and stadia, say Tannoy.

As well as the new VQ Series installation range, Tannoy will also be demonstrating their VQ Live rental sound system at PLASA09 based on the same technology (distributed exclusively in the UK by Red Square Audio) as well as the company's award-winning Qflex digital beam steering array.
