Like its predecessor, the MMA-4XR will be a minimalist microphone preamplifier designed to provide integrity and transparency. Each channel will have controls for gain (60dB in 3dB steps), phase invert, cut (mute) and 48V phantom power. The Phantom power circuit will provide a higher than usual level of current output - often a problem with inferior designs that can result in compromised microphone performance. Input and output headroom will extend to +28dBu and the MMA-4XR frequency response will extend to more than 200kHz - well beyond the basic 20kHz audio band.
In addition to the attributes of the existing MMA-4, which is already renowned for its ultra-low noise and distortion, high level of transparency and ability to deliver consistently good sound over the whole range of gain settings, the new MMA-4XR will incorporate upgraded electronics that will further improve its sonic performance.
"The MMA-4XR is designed for discerning professional recording engineers. It provides users with an enhanced version of an existing product that has been a popular part of our range for some years," says Prism Sound's marketing director Graham Boswell. "Along with the improvements to its electronics, the unit is also being aesthetically re-designed to give it a modern, up to date look. This will reflect the look of other Prism products such as the ADA-8 and ADA-8XR multichannel converters, with which it is often sold."
Engineer/producer Leif Mases has worked with a diverse range of artists including Abba, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck and Black Sabbath. This experience, combined with his co-ownership of the renowned Polar (ABBA) Studios, provided the essential understanding needed to define and implement new and improved professional audio components. His knowledge of the creative process and Prism Sound's focus on engineering and technical excellence have ensured that all products in the Maselec Master Series range deliver great-sounding audio in an intuitive and easy-to-use package.
