UK - The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) has announced the launch of three new MA degree courses in technical theatre, with courses in Theatre Costume, Stage Management, and Performance Lighting Design commencing in September 2025.
These MA programmes aim to bridge the skills gap in the industry by training the next generation of technical theatre professionals in highly specialised areas essential to live performance. Each new course has been developed in response to the evolving demands of the industry, underscoring RADA’s commitment to equip the sector with supported technical specialists through in-depth and hands-on training.
The MA in Performance Lighting Design will enable students to have a sustained and lifelong career as lighting designers. Students will examine what it means to use lighting as a powerful creative tool for storytelling. With training driven by expertise in theatre and guidance from industry professionals, the course covers the full spectrum of lighting techniques. The programme will give students the skills to create dynamic and engaging environments for live audiences.
Tailored for an evolving industry, the MA in Costume replaces the current Postgraduate Diploma course and offers students comprehensive training in costume construction, and the techniques essential for creating compelling visual narratives through wardrobe. Students will work closely with RADA’s expert tutors and will have opportunities to collaborate on live productions, providing real-world experience that aligns with industry standards.
The MA in Stage Management focuses on the critical role of stage managers in coordinating all aspects of live performance. Students will gain insights into team management, communication skills, and practical logistics to handle the complexities of live productions, from rehearsals through to the final curtain call and beyond.
RADA has a long history of producing industry leaders both onstage and behind the scenes, and these new courses reflect RADA’s belief that the technical disciplines are as essential to storytelling as performance itself.
“These new MA courses reflect RADA’s commitment to collaboration and innovation in theatre-making. We are excited to equip students with the skills to shape the future of live performance,” says Diane Favell, director of technical training.
“Theatre is a collaborative art form, and technical disciplines are at the heart of bringing creative visions to life,” says Niamh Dowling, RADA principal. “These new courses provide an unparalleled opportunity for students to develop their craft. We aim to empower the next generation of technical theatre professionals with the skills, creativity, and confidence they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.”
Applications are now open for the MA courses in Theatre Costume, Stage Management, and Lighting Design with an initial deadline of 26 March 2025.
