China - To mark the forthcoming Beijing Olympics, on 30-31 May large-format projection artist Paolo Buroni and Stark Srl will create what they claim to be the largest multi-projection ever attempted - on the new, 234m high CCTV (Central Chinese Television) building in Beijing. During the pre-Olympic event, which will take place in front of the highest Chinese authorities and the Italian Ambassador, more than 45,000sq.m of the four façades of the gigantic, modern building will be frescoed.

Created for sportswear giant Nike, the multi-projection is among the most complex and demanding ever performed, say Stark. The technical difficulties in achieving such a project in the urban centre of Beijing represent a technical and artistic challenge.

Paolo Buroni says: "This operation fits perfectly into my artistic career made up of invasions into, and virtual transformation of, the urban landscape, through images in multivision . . . We face the complicated positioning of the projection technologies; their distances from the building, which is more than 230m high, vary between 40 and 200m. The projection power required to win this challenge is enormous and calls for very complicated technical solutions.

The projected image will be divided into 80 sections that will then be recombined through highly precise graphical processing and a series of complicated calculations and tests in order to obtain a perfectly reconstructed image. In order to realize this projection on such a vast area, 80 Stark projectors will be used. The Italian manufacturer, a world leader in architectural projections, has already been used at the San Siro stadium and on the Pirelli skyscraper. As on several other similar special projects, Stark has created special optics (about 80cm long) because during the live testing, it was clear that the event could not be managed using standard lenses.

Sartoria Comunicazione created and promoted this event and its support was fundamental in overcoming all of the logistic and bureaucratic obstacles tied to such a complex operation, say Stark Srl.
