The show was Zappa plays Zappa; Frank's son Dweezil has hit on a notion to honour his fathers' legacy by reviving some of his more popular works. Zappa is the Brussels sprout of contemporary music; most assuredly an acquired taste, his output is not easy to digest but my god it's good for you.
It's 18 years since father Frank died, and as I sat there with two of my oldest friends hanging on every note, I realised that since 1993 I've been in a barren wasteland populated by new kids on the block, actually and metaphorically. It didn't need a 'light show' just so long as we could see the band; it didn't need a stage set; we just needed to hear the music. If you're even the remotest fan of the merest scintilla of his work, go and see the show. It will rekindle your youthful passion for music and remind you of when you used to get stoned and music sounded 400% better than it did when you were straight. Imagine that? Music that gets you high without the aid of narcotics; it's got to be worth a visit.
The Barbican re-opened in June and is presenting a fine variety of live shows to a hungry east Yorkshire public"
