"We visited the City of London from 10-15 November in order to strengthen our ties with the City, with which we have a formal affiliation," explains Commander Ian Annett of HMS Illustrious. "We are also affiliated to two Livery Companies, one of which is the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers, who have kindly donated two gobo projectors to us and we have been steadily increasing our library of images over the last year."
The poppy image is being funded by one of the Lightmongers and was presented to HMS Illustrious at its annual dinner at the beginning of November. "The design is based on the 2006 Royal British Legion image and was projected onto one of our funnels during our time in Greenwich," says Commander Annett.
"It was certainly a novelty to play a key part of the projection onto the funnel of the ship," adds Steve Connolly, who is in charge of Rosco's European gobo business development. "It gives one a chance to see one's work in a rather different environment from the norm.
"But more importantly, it helped us to play a part in commemorating succeeding generations of servicemen who have lost their lives," Connolly continues. "With the passage of time now making world changing events like the First World War seem ever less relevant to modern life, it is very important that the millions who have perished in war should not be forgotten. Being a part of events like this means that we can help, in our own small way, to ensure that doesn't happen."
