"The infinitely variable pick-up pattern enables sound engineers and recordists to try out new settings with minimum effort and to optimise the sound at the mixing console," explains Sebastian Schmitz, Sennheiser's product manager for microphones. "Any intermediate stage between the individual pick-up patterns is possible."
The signals of the two linear symmetrical push-pull transducers are fed separately to the mixing desk. The pick-up pattern is then generated as required by adjusting the fader setting and signal phase.
"The sound of the MKH 800 TWIN is similar to that of our new MKH 8000 series," continues Schmitz. "It offers fine resolution and a natural, warm sound with exceptional neutrality and transparency."
Sennheiser UK's John Willett adds: "This microphone is a lot more flexible than it appears at first glance. For instance, if recording in acoustically bad conditions, it's possible to put EQ or filters on the rear facing capsule only - still having the polar pattern required, but enabling fine-tuning not possible with other microphones."
