India - Lighting designer Jasangat Sonpal selected 62 Claypaky Sharpy X Frames for a dynamic concert starring Shaan, one of the most popular singers of Indian cinema, at Phoenix Market City in Bangalore, 20 December 2024.
Shaan is a playback singer, composer, actor and television host who records in multiple languages. He is considered among the greatest playback singers, or ghost singers, whose pre-recorded songs are dubbed into motion picture soundtracks replacing the actors’ voices.
For his own high-voltage concert, Shaan opened with some Bollywood classics to the delight of his fans. He took them on a journey through his colourful career, including ‘the four stages of love’ featuring soulful numbers and ballads. He also added a local touch, performing Kannada folk music that earned cheers from the crowd.
Having worked with Shaan for a long time, Sonpal was given a free hand to design the concert. He worked closely with the artist’s manager Sidharth Ghanta during the process of designing the show and getting the Claypaky Sharpy X Frames on board.
“Sharpy X Frames are my go-to light. I love playing and switching between their spot and beam modes,” says Sonpal. “The fixture is truly a hybrid light with characteristics of an LED-like spot and a punchy, laser-style beam. If there is mid-air projection or if we need to highlight the artist on stage, X Frame can do both, which makes it a special light in today’s market.”
Sonpal distributed the X Frames along three horizontal trusses upstage, mid-stage and downstage with 12 fixtures on each. The remainder of the fixtures were positioned on the sides of the LED screen on three 5m trusses. The Sharpy X Frames were provided by Felix Remedios and Selvin Remedios at Reynold’s Sound & Lighting Services in Bangalore.
In addition to acting as lighting designer for the concert, Sonpal also served as the programmer and lighting operator.
