Formally known as The Underground, the traditional 'black hole' student union bar was transformed into a modern multipurpose venue, complete with a KV2 sound system, BSS Soundweb DSP, Avolites Pearl lighting control desk and Robe moving light fixtures. All DMX lighting control data is distributed via Ethernet. The refit has dramatically increased the venue's capacity, as well as making it more versatile.
PAI's design team collaborated closely with the SU's general manager Antony Blackshaw and interior designers/architects Heron Design, who conceived a new look and ambience for Sub Zero. The technical integration also played a vital role in the physical and psychological transformation of the venue, involving the design, specification and installation of new sound and lighting systems plus DJ booth.
PAI's technical director Andy Bonehill elaborates: "We knew the union required a multipurpose space. Given the expertise of the local student technical crew, the key was to deliver an easily rigged infrastructure. The flexible nature of the lighting rig and sound system does just this. With occasional investment in new luminaires and relocation etc, the lighting rig can be altered, keeping the space fresh and changing each month."
PAI's Paul Adams adds: "Working with the team from the University of Essex SU, Heron Design and Apex Project Management was a pleasure. It's great to be able to get inside a project from the ground up and to ultimately deliver such a versatile system - it's what we do!! I'm really happy that our collective client has received these accolades, and it's a testament to how good this venue really is."
