This week's many news stories and reports reflect the breadth and global reach of our industries. On the installation front, there is news of Klotz Digital's work in the White House, a major Nexo install in Stockholm's Grand Hotel and much else besides. The trend towards improved audio in cinemas continues with the opening of the 10-screen Arcadia Multiplex in Bellinzago in Lombardy, complete with impressive EV-based sound systems, while sports stadia are also realising the benefits of quality sound and light installs: the North Harbour Stadium in Auckland is the latest example.

While on matters sporting, the Beijing Olympics are fast approaching. The torch has been lit and is now on its way round the world. Politics and boycotts permitting, the Games will no doubt provide a fine showcase for manufacturers and integrators who are also already casting their eyes towards the London Olympics in 2012. Great opportunities here too.

Another major event on the international circuit, the annual Eurovision Song Contest, is also drawing closer. Ireland is set to ruffle a few feathers at this year's event after a puppet turkey won the country's nomination to sing at the Serbian ceremony. Dustin The Turkey performed alongside five other nominees and won through after the public pledged their votes. His tongue-in-cheek track Irelande Douze Pointe was penned by Darren Smith and Simon Fine and pokes fun at Eurovision's voting system.

Meanwhile, Sennheiser, closely involved with Eurovision, is running a competition of its own. The microphone manufacturer is looking for a sound logo - a short audio signature that will be instantly recognisable as the sound of Sennheiser. Musicians, composers, sound designers and creative minds are invited to take part between now and 17 July, 2008. The very best ideas will be rewarded with prizes, including 5,000 Euros for the overall winner, who will be announced at the beginning of September, the company says.
