UK - The innovative special effects that are helping the London Palladium bring Frank Sinatra to life on stage owe much of their success to the skill of Gerry Corry, freelance video engineer and project manager, who managed the Sinatra Livetheatrical production on behalf of XL Video UK.

This swinging musical event, which has received rave reviews, is a celebration of the life and songs of one of the world's best-loved crooners. The show features a live orchestra and dancers, plus vintage video footage of 'Old Blue Eyes', which is projected onto huge screens. A number of special guests duet with Frank, singing alongside the man himself in a live performance that incorporates the latest digital film and stage technology.

Corry, who has a long track record of working on video projects in the entertainment industry, was responsible for installing the large number of video projectors and video wall displays needed to deliver this spectacular. The signal processing was made up off numerous different computer servers that provided the video content. All of these were linked together by a vast networking control system.

UK cable specialists VDC Trading were called in to supply all of the cables, components and connectors needed to work the video system. These included audio multicore, co-axial and audio installation cables. VDC also supplied racking and patching, including custom black racks that were specially sourced for the show.

"The whole system had to be build as a permanent installation, which meant we had to comply with certain building codes," says Corry. "The build schedule was very tight as we had only been given four weeks to complete the installation, test all systems and to rehearsal the show. As you can imagine, we were all under a lot of pressure."

Corry adds that he was delighted with the service he got from VDC Trading, particularly as he was a first time customer (purchasing on behalf of XL Video UK).

"The help and advice I received from VDC's Nick Chmara, who I dealt with exclusively, was invaluable to me and my team. I was so impressed with the level of knowledge and technical support and the way in which Nick was able to understand what was required, even though my description of the product was sometimes vague."

Sinatra at the London Palladium opened in February and tickets are now on sale through to October.
