Some years ago the pillars, each about 6m high, were supplied and erected by Just Sets. They were originally fitted with fluorescent tubing and the new idea was to convert to RGB LED technology. The units now have DMX control, which means the lighting operator within the venue is able to take control of the outside pillar lights and incorporate them into his show. A plug-in interface allows patching to the lighting console to enable chases and colour changes to each individual pillar.
"It's so much more advanced, the colours are richer and there are more applications," explained David Caddy, who until recently was technical manager at the Vodadome. "It came out so much better than what we had expected. It's actually awesome. Importantly, the 'Royal Red' to represent the Vodacom logo, has now been achieved.
