UK - Vaughan Sound Installations (VSI) has designed and installed an architectural lighting scheme, plus sound and AV at Blancos, a new independently owned hotel with function suite and conference facilities in Port Talbot, South Wales.

"The client wanted a design/install company that could deliver a simple integrated solution" explains VSI's technical manager Tony Moruzzi, who oversaw the project working closely with Clive Hopkins, one of the owners.

VSI's brief included enabling Blancos' meeting rooms and public spaces - through the establishment of a technical infrastructure - to be as flexible as possible for multiple functions and events.

VSI specified LED lighting for all its energy saving properties, and its low running cost and maintenance advantages. In the main Function Room, they installed 72 i-Vision Lumos 3 RGB Link LED strips, ensconced in the coving above the main seating areas, and behind the optics in the bar area.

All the Lumos Links are controlled via Lumos 216 programmable drivers and operated via a Sunlight DMX controller, offering eight preset patterns which can be changed and reprogrammed as desired. This also controls the house lighting via a 24 channel Anytronics dimming pack installed by VSI.

Downstairs in the main bar area VSI installed exactly the same control system. The lighting fixtures in this area are again Lumos 3 Links.

The main speaker system in the Function Room consists of two T&M 350W left and right speakers and an 8-way surround system of Australian Monitor Install 50s going around the 210 capacity room. "We went for a powerful system design, capable of a bit of cranking up, but not OTT for the space," says Moruzzi.

The system is powered by a combination of T&M SA800 and SA 450 amplifiers and a cloud Z4 controller divides the sound into four zones around the room. The DJ mixer is a Citronic CDM 10-4 and there's a Citronic CD4-2-way CD player.

For the two conference rooms, PAI chose solid all-round systems consisting of a Sanyo PLC-XU83 data projector with a 6ft electric roll-down screen, Samsung DVD player and a small sound system. A Procon control system will switch on all the devices and roll down the screen into a 'ready to go' state with a single button press.

The audio package also included a smaller background music/cabaret system for the downstairs bar - consisting of two T&M 12" speakers driven by SD600 amps - which can also be patched through to the Function Room.
