To achieve the dramatic lighting of Nelson's Column White Light's Simon Jones used a wide selection of equipment from White Light's extensive rental stock, including ETC Source Fours, White Light Exhibition Uplighters, Clay Paky Alpha Wash 1200s, StudioDue Citycolour 400s, Martin MAC2000 Profiles and Vari*Lite VL2000 Washes all controlled from an MA Lighting grandMA Lite console. The equipment was installed by a team led by Jones and production electrician Ben Cash.
The most challenging part of the project was lighting Nelson himself, perched on top of the column 165 feet above the streets of London. Fortunately the solution to the problem had been launched just a short time before at the 2006 PLASA Show: Robert Juliat's stunning Lancelot 4kW followspot/effects projector. One Lancelot was positioned on a balcony at the Hilton Trafalgar Hotel, giving an unobstructed view of Nelson though at a considerable throw - something that didn't present any problem at all to Lancelot's bright, 2-5? beam.
