USA - LEDtronics reports that their new LED lamps at the Santa Monica Pier and Carousel Building are helping the 97-year-old landmark conserve energy by more than 30%, increase safety, remove light pollution, and reduce maintenance time.

"The old, fluorescent lights on the pier burned out, left gaps in the lighting and were in a difficult area to maintain," states Matt Henigan, City of Santa Monica, office of sustainability and the environment, energy efficiency engineer. "With the new LED lamps in place, maintenance is minimal, and we have already reduced energy consumption by over 30%. And because the LED lighting is directional, it improves safety and enhances the Pier's appearance without causing light pollution for local residents."

South Africa - Twelve new Robe Robin DLX LED Spots have been purchased and installed in the Theatre of Marcellus, the main entertainment venue at Emperor's Palace Hotel Casino Convention and Entertainment resort in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Kevin Stannett, head of lighting at Emperor's Palace (and also a freelance LD) specified the fixtures as part of a recent lighting upgrade. He wanted an eco-friendly solution for the new lighting units as the resort looks to the future and embraces the philosophy of greener operations.

The units were delivered by Robe's South African distributor DWR, whose Robert Izzett demonstrated the DLX.

While power consumption is not an issue at Emperor's Palace, other cost-saving advantages of having LED lighting - like never having to replace the bulbs - were also a definite plus.

It was the first time Blackburn UK based HSL had worked with the veteran British rock band who have sold over 70m albums worldwide in a career spanning six decades. They are pulling in enthusiastic crowds crossing several generations of music fans.

Mick Thornton has worked for the Moody Blues for the last 12 years and for this tour he wanted a lighting contractor who could also supply the LED elements as well as a company with "a friendly, people-orientated approach who were big enough to offer the service levels we required and without a large and complex management hierarchy," he explains.

HSL's project manager Mike Oates comments, "It was a great privilege for us to work with Mick and the band. The lighting design

UK - Lighting specialists Point Source Productions has refreshed its lighting stock through Ambersphere Solutions. Managing director Stephen Capel reports, "When the decision was made to expand our catalogue, we decided to invest in Clay Paky luminaires due to the broader range of features than found on comparable products from other manufacturers. We feel that this choice has a double benefit to us as a company that provides equipment to such a wide variety of events.

"Their versatility makes them a really cost effective investment as they spend very little time sitting in the warehouse and secondly, clients have confidence in the brand - they know they are getting a very high quality bit of kit. There are always customers who aspire to have more than their budget allows but we find that the flexibility of the Clay Pakys makes them such a valuable item that if equipme

UK - Funktion-One and three of its rental network partners delivered audio solutions to Sonic, Arcadia, and WOW at the UK's biggest festival, continuing a relationship that began during Glastonbury's formative moments in the early 1970s.

Audio Plus worked closely with Funktion-One to design an audio spec for Sonic, which presented some unusual challenges. Audio Funktion made sure that the aural spectacle matched the visual extravaganza at Arcadia. And Audio X supplied the sound to WOW, which, like Sonic, formed part of the Silver Hayes area.

Sonic was built by Silver Stage, using its SaddleSpan modular truss framework. Structured in a three-pronged-shape - essentially a Y with a short stem - it presented an intriguing space for festival goers and a rather challenging environment for the audio specialists. Tony Andrews worked with Audio Plus' owner Stefan Imhof and project mana

Germany - GLP German Light Products have launched a new iPad app for their impression X4 fixture.

One of the versatile features of the impression X4 is that users can create their own pixel designs on the fly and store them directly into their control console. The new iPad app makes the process fast and easy by bringing up a mimic of the fixtures front lens layout. Users can tap individual lenses on and off to design the output that they would like. Simultaneously the app displays the corresponding DMX channels and values to be input to the controller for the physical fixture.

An additional feature of the app is the colour picker allowing you to see colour selection on top of any pattern for a real feel of how a final pattern will appear.

France - The historic Indochine tour, which will take place over two years, debuted at mid-sized venues in France in March. It has gradually become more and more impressive in size occupying ever more important concert locations and triumphing at the Stade de France.

It is an original event lit by the staff of Concept-K, whose young lighting designer Thomas Déchandon put together an unusual lighting design with a special place for Clay Paky's A.Leda Wash K20s. Their LED rings are arranged in a circular array, which is a clear reference to the tour's visual impact and recalls the oval light on the poster. The project is entirely in keeping with the times and, at the Elispace in Beauvais, it merged Clay Paky's traditional features with its brand new washlights.

The very special set of lights used was chosen from the Dushow stock for their visual effects, with the aim of p

Nigeria - Although only one year old, Mark Osho's Megavision Lighting was contracted to deliver a spectacular set for this year's Miss Nigeria pageant in Lagos - the 38th edition of this annual event.

Held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, in front of 2,400 of the country's leading A-list VIPs, celebrities and socialities, Osho himself based much of his lighting design around PR Lighting effects - using six each of the XR200 Beam and XLED 1037 to create the impact, along with four XLED 336 and 12 PR348.

Working within a set designed by Bolaji Durojaiye of Equally Diverse Solutions, the fixtures were mounted on three sided trussing, measuring 5m (H) x 9m (W) x 13m (L) and mixed with discharge and other LED bars, helped deliver a vibrant colour canvas of blue and purple. The show itself was run from an Avolite Pearl Tiger 2010 console.

UK - A revolutionary sound system and reoriented stage provided the winning recipe for the AEG-Barclaycard British Summer Time festival at London's Hyde Park, as Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones kicked off the ten-day season.

Historically dogged by offsite noise pollution, this led to neighbourhood complaints and the need to reduce sound levels on site - meaning that the audience couldn't hear the performances. And so new tenants AEG/Loud Sound adopted Martin Audio's Multi-Cellular Loudspeaker Array (MLA) system to help solve the problem.

Knowing that its advance level of control would be the only scientifically proven system capable of maintaining an offsite level beneath the stipulated 75dB(A) threshold, there was the equal confidence of being able to raise the levels up by as much as 6dB from previous years to around 100dB(A) within the audience area, ensuring that the entir

USA - Mumford & Sons, continue their action packed touring schedule, having just finished a string of Canadian and US shows - where Robe LEDWash moving lights were once again a prominent feature on the lighting rig designed by New York based LD, Ed Warren of Next Level Lights.

Warren has been working with the band for the last four and a half years and the starting point for this instalment of the on-going tour was "Let's kick some serious festival ass with true tungsten power".

For at least the past 12 months, Warren's lighting rig for the band has contained continual evolutions based on different variants of tungsten lighting. He is a big fan of its softness, subtleties and specific qualities.

For this latest Canadian / US section he incorporated 16 Robe Robin 600 LEDWashes and 14 Robe Robin 1200 LEDWashes into the design, which were supplied by lighting and soun

China - Visual Productions has confirmed a distribution partnership with Advance Communication Equipment (ACE) for the Chinese market.

This new partnership began during the Prolight+Sound show in Frankfurt earlier this year, when senior vice president Bingo Tso and business manager Dicky Ling visited the Visual Productions' stand. Director of Visual Productions, Maarten Engels, talked them through the controllers including the new B-Station and CueluxPro software. In agreement about the market opportunities available with both the Live controllers and the solid-state range on the Chinese market, both ACE and Visual Productions have not stopped since.

More than 100,000 tickets sold online, while the rest were bought by phone, post or in person from the Albert Hall. BBC Proms director Roger Wright described the "record-breaking" sales as a "thrill".

The most popular Proms in terms of ticket sales included the First Night of the Proms, conducted by Sakari Oramo in his inaugural performance as chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, on 12 July, plus two Doctor Who Proms on 13 and 14 July and both Proms by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with Mariss Jansons on 8 and 9 August. Wright, who is also the controller of BBC Radio 3, added that there were still tickets available for the "vast majority of events" and that "you can always come and Prom on the day&

"The CMT Music Awards is a huge event on the music calendar and gets bigger and bigger every year. It outshines every other awards show," says Kenny.

Kenny partnered with production designer Ann Brahic, who marked her fifth year with the show. "She designed a set that was a very modern scape. VER supplied Kenny with 140 Clay Paky Sharpys for inside and outside the arena. Two grandMA2 consoles

When ETC began developing a lighting product for cycloramas, they didn't want to introduce just another cyc light on the market. It had to meet several requirements to be deserving of the ETC brand: the light would be bright, easy to use, provide seamless coverage, and comply with the high standards ETC sets for its products. The result is the Source Four LED CYC, an adapter that affixes to any Source Four LED luminaire, transforming it into a powerful tool to illuminate cycloramas.

Using the x7 Color System, which combines up to seven LED colours in one unit, Source Four LED luminaires can provide a nearly limitless range of colours, from pure whites to refined pastels and vibrant, saturated hues.

With the introduction of the Source Four LED CYC accessory, that colour flexibility can now be applied to cycloramas. "The Source Four LED CYC can really jazz up monochromatic cloths,
