Denmark - When the staff at Svalegangen, a theatre in the western Danish city of Aarhus, started looking for new control desks for their 200 seat main theatre and touring needs, they weren't expecting to make a quick purchase.

They wanted to find a control system with familiar syntax, in order to ease users' learning process on the new desks, and which would have great support and would be future proofed, with regular software updates keeping up with advances in lighting technology.

After browsing the market for a replacement control desk for about a year, head of lighting Anders Kjems and his team decided on ETC Gio for their main stage and a second for touring, complementing the Ion they previously bought for the 40-seat foyer stage. As part of the ETC Eos line, both Gio and Ion use the same control syntax they were used to from their previous desk, enabling both resident an

USA - New Orleans-based rental and sales company, RZI Lighting, has been intensifying its relationship with GLP Inc during the past year - partly based on the quality and popularity of new age LED heads like the impression X4 and budget-conscious Volkslicht Spot - but also as a result of the support he knows he can rely on from the Californian-based company.

Recently relocated to an enlarged 25,000sq.ft facility - a measure of RZI Lighting's own success - CEO Ray Ziegler expects to continue adding impression heads to the inventory.

"The new equipment from GLP is really very exciting," he says. "The X4 has some great features including pixel chases and a fantastic look on stage, the colors are really saturated and the effects are easy to make with a simple console. But it's best part is that it's a fixture I can make money on - and that's what I like most."<

USA - The Monterey Jazz Festival is one of the longest consecutively running jazz festivals and has featured some of the most riveting performances from artists such as Billie Holiday, Etta James and Louis Armstrong since its inception more than 50 years ago. Since then, the bar has been set high, so that show audiences, which have grown to more than 8,000 at the arena stage alone, now expect the legacy to live on with outstanding performances each and every year. In order to not disappoint, sound engineers work behind the scenes to address the challenges of having to deliver clear sound in an open arena setting with minimal visibility of mics. DPA Microphones' d:screet 4060 Omnidirectional offers just the solution, as its low-profile, natural sound accommodates engineers for every performance or environment.

USA - Founded in 1826 in Easton, Pennsylvania, USA, Lafayette College offers degree programmes in the liberal arts and engineering to its 2400 full-time students. As a member of the intercollegiate Patriot League, Lafayette has an active sports and recreational programme with modern facilities including Fisher Stadium, home of the Lafayette Leopards football team.

Fisher Stadium underwent a major renovation beginning in 2006 that included additional seating, synthetic turf, stadium lighting, a large press box and a 19' x 35' video display. The renovation included sound system upgrades but the upgraded system did not provide even coverage in the new seating areas and it had neighbourhood spill issues. In addition, many spectators complained that the new subwoofers seemed overpowering.

Last year, Lafayette asked Communication Systems, Inc. (CSI) of Allentown, Pennsylvania to red

The Netherlands - Award-winning comedienne Sara Kroos is a familiar face on stage and screen in the Netherlands, enjoying a high level of popularity thanks to regular television appearances and live tours. Her current tour is titled Van Jewelste and features a Yamaha CL1 digital mixing system.

The 90 minute show is a mixture of dialogue and songs, with Sara playing piano accompanied by Rutger Hoorn on drums. Having used rented mixing consoles up until now, Sara and mix engineer Jan Heideveld felt it was time to have their own system.

"Sara has 150 live shows coming up in the next 18 months, so we felt it was worthwhile to invest in a system that would tour with us," says Jan, an experienced sound designer and mixing engineer, who has worked with Sara on her last two tours.

After an 'audio shootout' of several different digital consoles, they chose the CL1 fo

Adlib were chosen as technical supplier under the wing of James Sharpe, Andrew Thornton and John Pryer for 24/7 Productions Ltd. Lebanon - While skiing may not be a sport readily associated with Lebanon, the country is in fact home to the highest mountains in the Middle East, and has been home to several fully equipped resorts since the 1960s. The recent refurbishment of Le 1700, one of the best après-ski restaurants in the resort of Faqra, has seen the installation of a QSC sound system based on K and KW Series Active Loudspeakers, courtesy of Beirut-based QSC distributor Techno Sound.

Situated at an altitude of 1700m, Le 1700 is a French restaurant that also features live music and dancing. "We were asked to provide some speakers for a live test as part of the complete refurbishment of the restaurant," explains Pierre Fahed of Techno Sound. "The PA had to be suitable for the playback of recorded lounge music suitable for quiet dining, but also for the amplification of live music for danc

UK - Christie HD8K 3-chip 1920 x 1080 HD projectors have completed one of their most unusual ever tours of duty, following a one-month deployment on a film set at Shepperton Studios for the new British independent film called Last Passenger.

The four projectors were instrumental in creating a sense of realism for this claustrophobic suspense thriller, starring Dougray Scott and Kara Tointon, and co-written by Omid Nooshin and Andrew Love (with Nooshin directing).

The action takes place aboard a Charing Cross to Hastings commuter train, and follows the 90-minute journey - with horrifying consequences.

It was to create a fast moving backdrop that Zack Winfield, who is producing the film with Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto, decided to use projection - rather than resorting to the more sterile and conventional 'green screen' alternative - and approached QED, Christie's rental stag

USA - Love's Labour's Lost got a new musical treatment this summer at Central Park's famed Shakespeare in the Park, and Clay Paky Sharpy Washes helped give the show a new look, too. Popular for rock and pop music tours, the Sharpy Washes were the perfect fit for the six-week run of the innovative staging of one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies.

The Public Theatre presents free Shakespeare in the Park at Central Park's Delacorte Theatre every summer. This year it paired Comedy of Errors with a spring break-style musical version of Love's Labour's Lost..

Eight Sharpy Washes were provided to lighting designer Jeff Croiter, who lent his talents to both plays in the park. "I was very lucky to find them. I didn't know they existed until I saw them at a demo," he explains. "They proved to be the perfect light for us - I couldn't imagine using

USA - Nearly 90 contemporary works of light, sound, performance and projection art recently transformed the downtown Dallas Arts District into a new media art exhibition called Dallas Aurora 2013. Syncrolite, a Dallas-based theatrical and architectural lighting manufacturer, played a role as one of the lighting exhibits in this 19-square-block event.

Syncrolite provided a system of ten 8000 watt XL xenon lighting fixtures to illuminate the 1 Arts Plaza, one of the highlighted locations for the multi-sensory and participatory experiences.

On the 18 October event day, Troy Eckerman programmed the XL fixtures, while a Syncrolite team - including Steve Washington, Jesus Vigueria, Pete Martinez, Arturo Ruiz, Shawn Rodney and Isaac Cantu - installed the system.

All of the XLs were positioned on the sidewalk, across the street directly opposite 1 Arts Plaza. The 10 fixtures were gr

USA - At the new Terminal B at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), a self-powered 48 V Meyer Sound loudspeaker system in the south concourse has raised the bar for audio fidelity and flexibility. Despite large reflective surfaces and tall ceilings, announcements and music are projected with a crispy clarity rarely heard in transportation facilities.

"The audio quality, intelligibility, and uniformity of coverage are distinctly better than most terminals across the country," says Ulf Lueders, Terminal Services group manager of the Houston Airport System (HAS). "With this upgrade, travellers can enjoy the various concessions without having to worry about missing a flight announcement. Higher quality also allows the concourse operator to choose from a wider variety of background music, without being restricted to the 'elevator music' compatible with

USA - While the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards attracted press coverage for its outrageous performances, the show made headlines among professionals for its creative staging, too. Clay Paky Sharpys and Sharpy Washes lit up the stage at Barclays Centre, Brooklyn where artist and designer KAWS reimagined the VMAs' iconic moonman statuette.

"For the 30th anniversary of the VMAs and its first time in Brooklyn we were celebrating Brooklyn and Brooklyn artist KAWS, who redesigned the moonman as a 60-foot inflatable silver statue that towered over the main stage," says lighting designer Tom Kenny. "I wanted to make it feel like you were in a gallery or museum honoring his work - it's an unusual idea for an awards show, but MTV is always on the edge."

To achieve his goal Kenny deployed a large complement of Sharpys and Sharpy Washes supplied by VER. "I had extrem

Italy - Slovakia's Leader Light was used in a new cycleway in Pero in the Italian region of Lombardy.

The cycle path is a new installation which is situated near the Milan Exhibition centre in Rho (the Province of Milan) with a length approximately 1.5 km. The cycleway crosses the A4 Highway.

The Milano Province designed the original project with 66 pieces of LED lighting with total system power of 30 W. These luminaries were replaced by Leader Light's LED street lighting. They used only 56 pieces of LL STREET PS 20W 4000K GAG in 6 m height and six pieces of 6 PCS LL STREET PS 20W 4000K GAG in 3.5 m height with flux detuned of 30%.

"Our solution of street lighting is on a really high level, we are still working on some innovation and this project is good example how cities can save operating costs for lighting in the range of 50 % to 75 %, " said managing director

USA - First opened in 1928, the Capitol Theatre is the oldest and second largest venue in Madison, Wisconsin's Overture Centre for the Arts complex, which today encompasses seven performance facilities and four art galleries. Despite undergoing a major renovation project eight years ago that halved the historic vaudeville house's capacity to approximately 1,100 seats, the Capitol's sound reinforcement system hadn't been updated for nearly two decades, prompting the recent installation of a new L-Acoustics amplifier and loudspeaker package.

According to Capitol Theatre technician Brian Anderson, the new system design is comprised of 10 Kara enclosures per side, each complemented by an additional hang of six SB15m subs creating an ultra-compact and lightweight flown three-way system. The Kara arrays are covering both balcony and orchestra level seating areas thus eliminating the n

South Africa - Continuing Lighthouse Technologies' global expansion, four LED screens have been installed on the main access roads to the Dube TradePort precinct in South Africa.

With one of the screens located directly in the flight path of incoming air traffic at the King Shaka's International airport in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, safety, control and durability, were of prime importance for the project.

As well as a rigorous electrical and mechanical specification, Dube TradePort required full control over the screens. For this reason, commissioning of the system included a series of brightness tests covering all light condition permutations during the 24/7 use. To ensure all criteria are met, each Lighthouse LED screen is independently dimmable and fitted with automatic brightness controllers.
