Tim Kemp, director of Hull, UK-based installers Euronis Ltd, was responsible for the specification and installation of the system. The PA was refurbished with Crown amplifiers, Peavey loudspeakers, Alesis outboard devices, Sennheiser mics and a 32-channel Allen & Heath GL2200 mixing console.
The GL2200/32 was chosen for its suitability as a multi-role mixer. Its main function is for live sound reinforcement during services and concerts where the audio requirements include wired and wireless mics for the ministers, a 16-strong choir and a band. However, the desk is also used for multi-track recording due to the Centre's production and broadcast requirements, for which Euronis established a PC-based studio as part of the installation.
The Centre hosts TV and Radio shows, including a weekly national TV broadcast, which has predominantly been a simple piece to camera in the pastor's office. With the increased audio quality, footage from the services can be incorporated. The desk's large number of ins/outs and flexible grouping allows the Centre's sound technicians to provide a separate audio mix for the video crew and also for monitors.
"We considered all the leading console manufacturers but Allen & Heath's reputation for reliability, the sound quality of the desk, operational clarity and competitive pricing, were deciding factors. Ease of use was essential as we had to complete the installation, cabling and training in a seven-day visit," said Kemp. "Environment also played a major part, with extreme heat, dust and sand inevitably taking a toll on the equipment. We needed a durable mixer with individual circuit boards for easy servicing . . . Not only this, the area's power supply can vary from 150 to 230 volts so the GL's wide input voltage range suits the variable mains power."
