The one-day course focuses on how - and why - the IET Wiring regulations and BS 7909 apply to power distribution at temporary events and delves a little into why they are relevant and more importantly how compliance is not necessarily difficult. As well as looking at how to implement them correctly it also examples where current practice is not always best practice, showing where potential dangers exist in a typical event. It will also be of particular use to rental companies as the course gives the delegate a sound understanding of the importance of portable appliance testing.
The content is aimed at those with a reasonable appreciation of electrical systems and covers areas such as multiple sources of supply, RCDs, earthing and bonding, inspection and testing as well as the management of temporary electrical infrastructure amongst others. Both those with a technical managerial background as well as technicians will gain from the course.
Following feedback from previous delegates Avitas will also host a one-day basic electrical theory course prior to each BS 7909 course to enable those who are a bit rusty on their theory a chance to brush up. It's not necessary to do the basic electrical course before coming on the second day; either can be taken individually or together for a discount. The basic electrical day covers principles from the ground up including power generation and distribution, basic everyday maths such as ohms law and power, protection methods, cable losses and so on - all using industry based examples and scenarios. It is ideally suited to lighting techs and similar who may not have any previous electrical qualifications as well as those who qualified some time ago and need an update.
The courses are supported by the Production Services Association (PSA) and will be delivered by James Eade who has worked in the live events industry for many years. He also serves on the panels that develop BS 7909 and BS 7671 and so it is an ideal opportunity for candidates to get their queries and concerns about electrical work answered.
