South Africa - A Midas PRO1, supplied and installed by South African Midas partner Prosound, ensured one of Durban's most prominent theatres went digital just in time for its fast moving Christmas production - Beauty and the Beast.

"The city's Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre hosts some of South Africa's biggest arts events including the Durban International Film Festival and Poetry Africa festivals," explains Ryan Selby of Prosound. "We installed a Midas PRO1 to ensure that this particular Panto's scene changes, many of which have to happen almost instantaneously, will work. These would have been unachievable with the venue's previous desk."

The move marks the first time Beauty and the Beast sound designer Megan Levy, of DarkHorse Productions, had used a PRO1. With only three days to familiarise herself with the console she was a bit apprehensive. H

UK - The latest UK arena leg of the successful Mumford & Sons Tour of Two Halves world tour featured 2,547 of XL Video's latest FX-200 product, together with three Pixled F11 LED screens, HD cameras / PPU and crew.

The band have been touring for the last three years with various different arrangements of tungsten lightsources over and around the stage as an integral part of the lighting rig.

Earlier in this tour, Warren introduced LED festoon lighting, going from the stage and reaching right out into the audience ... and he wanted to take this up another level and add another dynamic and adaptable lightsource to the mix - enter the FX-200.

USA - Alternative metal band 10 Years returned to their roots for a concert that combined new and classic elements for one show. Held on 29 December, 2012, the event featured two sets from the band: an acoustic set with a string trio and the fist-pumping heavy metal portion their fans know and love from their most recent album, Minus the Machine.

Lighting designer Will Twork has been designing concerts for over 40 years, almost 30 of which have been with Bandit Lites. Previous acts heralding Twork's designs include KISS, Aerosmith, Motorhead and Mötley Crüe. For 10 Years' concert at the historic Tennessee Theatre, Twork focused on the music for inspiration, drawing on dark musicality that pervades most of 10 Years' songs.

"I spent a week prior to even setting up any lights listening to the music to formulate ideas in my head," said Twork. "I wanted to a

UK - St Lawrence College in Ramsgate prides itself on the cutting edge facilities available to its students, so the recent addition of a dedicated new theatre at the college had to live up to high expectations. The multi-use theatre, which forms part of a 'new build' project at the independent school, and also includes classroom space, a new boardroom and dormitories, can easily seat all 480 senior school pupils at one time with its large main hall and balcony. A main stage dominates the back wall but the space can be adapted to hold performances in the round.

The architect in charge of the new build project contacted the London office of Stage Electrics giving them a blank canvas to design a full audio, video and lighting installation for the building.

Stage Electrics chose the Roland M-300 Digital Mixing Console, the Roland S-1608 Digital Snake Stage Unit and the Roland S-08

France - One of the country's most culturally important theatres, the Théâtre National Populaire (TNP) has been at the heart of contemporary French performing arts for over 90 years. Moving from Paris to Villeurbanne 40 years ago, a comprehensive refurbishment has seen a Yamaha digital audio system installed in the theatre's two performance spaces.

The aptly named Grand Théâtre and Petit Théâtre feature auditoriums seating 667 and 252 respectively, alongside rehearsal rooms and other facilities. After major refurbishment of the buildings, Vénissieux-based Scenetec was contracted to design and install the new technical infrastructure in both venues.

"Before the refurbishment, the auditoriums were more-or-less still as they had been in the 1970s, so it was the ideal opportunity to completely update the technical specification to modern standar

UK - Lighting and visuals rental company HSL continued its energetic working relationship with lighting / visuals designer Steve Bewley and the band Enter Shikari, supplying lighting and video equipment to the latest shows on their Flash Flood of Colour world tour.

Bewley has worked for Enter Shikari for the last five years. They are among the hardest working artists on the live circuit, bringing their highly adrenalized electro-metal sounds and stage performances to a loyal and enthusiastic international fanbase.

Around 18 months ago, HSL came on-board to supply equipment for their UK and European work after Bewley was impressed by the people, equipment, service and attitude of the Blackburn based operation.

"We needed a complete solutions company for lighting and visuals ... and HSL was a great choice," he states.

HSL's project manager Mike Oates says, &

UK - British rockers Level 42 have been living up to their 1984 album Standing in the Light by performing under a rig of Clay Paky Alpha Spot HPE 700s at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Lighting designer Yenz Nyholm says they form a key element in his lighting design: "We're only transporting 12 spots in the rig, which is not a lot especially when you get into big venues. The output you get with a Clay Paky is really striking for a 700W lamp. The output and the optics were the main reasons for choosing the Alpha Spots HPEs, and also the fact that they move incredibly fast."

The strength, versatility and nimble nature of the Alpha Spots have enabled Nyholm to build a look for the show which really complements the band's image: "The main thing I'm using with the spots is the colour - I use a lot of very slow colour fades. Obviously it's got to be a CMY fixture,

UK - Following popular demand, the LTM Motor School is back. Starting with two course dates in February 2013, the LTM team will be teaching a two day course on hoist maintenance and general theory. The course offers participants the opportunity to strip down and rebuild a LoadGuard hoist, under expert instruction from the LTM training staff.

Past motor schools have proven popular and this is the first course of its kind covering the LoadGuard hoists. The course has been introduced after customer demand as the hoist has been on the market for over four years now and clients and end users are keen to understand the workings of the LoadGuard.

The course will also cover general electrical theory, correct operation procedure, maintenance, troubleshooting and health & safety, giving a good overall view of hoist theory to participants.

The two two-day courses are being held at Adli

UK - An Allen & Heath iLive digital mixing system is currently on a national tour of the UK with the hit musical, Bugle Boy, which traces the life, career and mysterious disappearance of the late bandleader and composer Glenn Miller.

The system is based around an iLive-T112 Control Surface and an iDR-48 MixRack fitted with a MADI network card.

"I first saw the modular iLive system at a PLASA show a few years ago, so when the compact fixed-format iLive-T Series came along, I decided to take the plunge and purchase a system. It has eliminated a 20U rack of outboard at FOH, made the FOH footprint much smaller and made fit-up/get-out times so much quicker. The get-out on this tour typically takes less than an hour, with FOH being able to be packed away in ten minutes," comments Andy Onion, Bugle Boy's sound designer and operator.

In the FOH rack is a rackmount P

UK - When Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (BOVTS) required an upgrade from their ageing prompt desk they turned to Stage Electrics who have successfully been building stage management consoles for over 30 years.

"When I joined BOVTS I realised that the students were using cue lights that would break and were not easy to programme. I felt the students needed the chance to work with exactly the same systems that they would be using once they graduated. This brought me to Stage Electrics," commented Louise Matthews, production stage management supervisor, BOVTS.

Working closely with Matthews, Stage Electrics designed and developed their new table top stage management console. Ideal for use in schools, touring shows and professional theatres; this flagship portable desk concept is proven to be a popular choice across a variety of venues such as East 15 Acting School and B
