UK - The BBC's iconic Television Centre closed its doors on 31 March 2013 after 53 years of service which endeared it to viewers and celebrities alike. The 1960s building in west London was sold for £200m and will be redeveloped into a hotel, flats, a cinema and office space.

To mark the occasion the BBC staged a series of televised events and programming including a live concert by Madness outside the building (broadcast on BBC Four), a special 'outdoor' One Show on BBC One which linked live to the concert and a two hour documentary about the building where a host of stars shared their TV Centre memories.

ELP provided lighting for both outside broadcast events. The company already supplies lighting director Dave Evans for the daily (studio based) One Show broadcasts. For this outdoor special Evans specified a completely new rig which included: Arri Junior

UK - The lighting division of busy Liverpool UK based technical solutions provider, Adlib has been architecturally lighting Premier League Football Club Everton's Goodison Park ground.

The idea was the brainchild of Blues chief operating officer, Denise Barrett-Baxendale, who deals with all of Everton's community based activities, with key support from the Club's memorable match day team alongside close consultation from Adlib Lighting's Pete Abraham.

The project focused on creating a huge visual impact for Everton supporters by lighting up the Park End stand ahead of important fixtures versus West Bromwich Albion, Oldham Athletic and Wigan Athletic.

It also follows on from a guerrilla style Adlib supported projection project that took place at key strategic sites around the city of Liverpool in December 2012 when for the 12 days before Christmas Everton turned the city Blue

UK - Having released her debut album just last year, British singer-songwriter Rita Ora is going from strength to strength. She recently completed the sold out 12-date UK leg of her Radioactive Tour to much acclaim. An essential part of the audio arsenal employed by front of house engineer Bronski for her live performance is a selection of Sennheiser microphones.

Bronski, who started working with Rita in February last year, has opted to use Sennheiser microphones for both Rita and her band because, he says, there is simply no better sounding, more reliable product on the market.

"Sennheiser wireless products are second to none," he says. "It's always the easiest choice to make, and it helps that Rita's voice sounds great on an SKM 2000 with an e 935 capsule. Her vocal always sits on top of the mix, and the e 935 enables me to find delicacies in her strong

Canada - Expecting an audience of 40,000, the first Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) has chosen a Meyer Sound LEO linear large-scale sound reinforcement system for its awards presentation ceremony on 6 April, at the BC Place stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia.

According to Derek Mahaffey, general manager of the event's audio supplier KiAN Concert Sound Services, TOIFA chose LEO for its power, coverage, and exceptional clarity.

"The production manager for the event heard LEO at an electronic dance music festival," Mahaffey says, "He was very impressed by the system's performance."

At TOIFA, LEO will play the critical role of voice reinforcement as well as supporting the soundtracks and live music presentations. The system will use 30 LEO-M line array loudspeakers and 12 1100-LFC low-frequency control elements to cover the arena's 180-degree se

UK - Manchester based lighting and visual specialist dbn continued its eclectic and busy 2013 schedule supplying lighting equipment and crew for the much anticipated recent shows by acclaimed Irish alt rockers My Bloody Valentine. These were supporting the band's new m.b.v. album and first released studio recording work since 1991.

In fact, explains dbn project manager Nick Walton, the company - in a different format to now - has been involved in My Bloody Valentine live shows dating back around 20 years, and he personally also dealt with some rare live performances shortly after their much heralded reformation in 2009.

Their LD is James Murray with whom Walton and dbn have also enjoyed a great working relationship for many years. Both the band's tour management and Murray wanted to use dbn again.

The show was moody, raw and highly theatrical, with atmospheric front p

Germany - Following feedback from the APRS's regular Manufacturer and Distributor meetings to look into heightening the profile of the pro audio sector in new markets, it has chosen Frankfurt Musikmesse as the exhibition to achieve its goal in Europe.

With support from the UKTi (UK Trade & Investment), the APRS has created a specially designed stand to act as a hub for all UK exhibitors and attendees to meet, network and promote themselves in the centre of Hall 5.1, which houses the growing recording and remix sectors.

The APRS stand will be actively encouraging UK exhibitors and attendees to use the large bar networking area, offering a place to meet and greet customers and prospective clients, book 30 min slots in the private meeting room, use the large promotional area to display their brochures, and network with others from the pro audio sector on the stand for the final h

UK - Less than five years ago, Olly Murs was just a self proclaimed 'normal bloke' auditioning for UK's X-Factor. In his initial appearance on the show, Simon Cowell claims Murs was the "easiest yes" he's ever given. Since then, things have certainly changed for this soulful pop artist. With three albums and a sold out arena tour in 2012, Olly Murs and his 2013 tour of US and Europe is reaching new heights.

With large moving scenic elements and a tall video orientated set, Olly Murs' production dimensions are certainly ambitious. Ant Carr, tour production manager via Production North, is making sure the tour takes every necessary precaution with system safety. During rehearsals he engaged Load Cell Rental (LCR) to provide an accurate assessment of the dynamic loads.

"The rig itself is typical for an arena tour," explains Carr. "Tour rigger Mark Wade fr

UK - Kasabian headlined Friday night of the 2013 Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) event which featured seven action-packed days of music and comedy, staged at London's Royal Albert Hall, and this year curated by Noel Gallagher to raise money and awareness for the charity.

Kasabian's lighting designer Nick Gray from creative design practice Renegade decided to go 'all-out' to ensure that their show looked distinctive and memorable, with the installation of a floor based 'specials' package of over 90 lighting fixtures.

"Basically I took the entire lighting rig from or two warm-up dates in Doncaster and Plymouth . . . and added it to the festival style 'house' rig being supplied by PRG for the TCT shows," explains Gray.

He wanted to make a serious impact for TCT, "It's a high profile gig and I reckoned the show visuals should be imprinted on people's retinas . . . and

USA - Respected rock, event and TV lighting designer Tom Kenny recently exercised the powerful, pure beams of Clay Paky's Sharpy fixtures to add 'razor sharp looks' to the dynamic lighting mix on The Who's mammoth North American tour - Quadrophenia and More.

Kenny, who has lit tours, events and TV shows for over 30 years worldwide, has designed tours for the likes of David Byrne, Santana, Juanes, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, David Bowie and of course The Who amongst many others. He says he used the Sharpys' effects to "sculpt the stage show and add drama, dimension and high impact architecture to the multi-media set."

Kenny says: "I love the Sharpys for their small size and speedy functionality. On the Who they gave a striking sharp beam and were especially effective when we're using no haze or smoke -they really cut through the extensive vi

He will take up his new position just as the company unveils its latest innovation at this year's Prolight+Sound Show in Frankfurt, arriving as the loudspeaker manufacturer's groundbreaking technology starts to enjoy unprecedented sales success.

King states that he immediately recognised the opportunity to capitalise on this. UK - The Public and Commercial Services Union has around 270,000 members and is the largest Civil Service trade union in the UK. Situated in an old building near Clapham Junction station, the headquarters of the PCS was in need of a number of interior refurbishments, including the installation of a modern conferencing system to service the needs of its National Executive Committee. The project saw the first UK installation of beyerdynamic's Quinta wireless conference system.

RG Jones Sound Engineering were commissioned alongside POLARaudio to supply a modern conferencing system to replace the out-dated analogue system that was in situ. The client required the capacity to cater for up to 49 microphone units.

The upgrade came in the form of a wireless solution, employing beyerdynamic's Quinta system. Quinta met all the requirements for safety, reliability and transmission securi

UK - Lighting designer Rick Fisher has chosen ETC's Selador Desire LED fixtures to help light David Hare'sThe Judas Kiss at the Duke of York's Theatre. Set in 1895, Hare's play tells the dramatic true story of the betrayal, imprisonment and downfall of famed playwright Oscar Wilde.

"For the kind of work I'm doing - a subtle piece with the lighting concentrating on moods, emotional states and times of day - I wanted lighting which doesn't draw attention to itself," says Fisher. "The Desire fixtures give a very nice, natural looking light, which was a pleasant surprise and a real advance." The best thing, from a lighting designer's point of view, Fisher explains, is that no one noticed the difference between the Desire LED and conventional fixtures in the hybrid lighting rig.

"I had been using conventionals on the show while it was on an initial f

She also won song of the year for Over You, written with her husband Blake Shelton, who also hosted the show. Lambert said, "Thank you for accepting me as a songwriter and not just as a singer, that means the world to me." Shelton's co-host Luke Bryan was the surprise winner of the prestigious entertainer of the year award.

Taylor Swift was up for five awards but went home empty-handed. She performed with Keith Urban and Tim McGraw. Newcomer Hunter Hayes was nominated in six categories but also failed to win. He did get to perform with Motown legend Stevie Wonder on his new single I Want Crazy and a cover of Wonder's song Sir Duke.

UK - Platinum-selling British artist, Paloma Faith, is currently in the midst of an extensive UK tour, which will run until the summer; recently, she brought her unique style and sound to the capital for a headline show at Hammersmith Apollo. Her monitor engineer, Saul Skoutarides, had an abundance of Sennheiser kit in tow...

Skoutarides, who also works monitors for Kings of Leon, has been a Sennheiser user for some time; be it the 2000 Series, the G2s or the G3s, he insists he has always achieved the best possible results when using Sennheiser systems.

"For me, Sennheiser is just worlds ahead of its competitors; you not only get sound quality, you get true value for money and absolute reliability," he says. "I used to use the G2s, which were great, but these G3s that I am using on the Paloma tour are even better: the stereo imaging; the RF; the gain structure;

France - Inaugurated in 1995 as two seasonal events, for the fourth year the Winter X Games moved outside the US to the skiing and snowboarding haven of Tignes in the French Alps recently, where more than 125 athletes from all over the globe competed. In addition to X Games Tignes, 2013 is also the first year that the event has gone truly global, with other events taking place in Aspen (USA), Foz De Iguaçu (Brazil), Barcelona (Spain), Munich (Germany) and Los Angeles (USA).

Australia - The Victorian College of the Arts has taken delivery of an ETC Gio console for its production course. The Gio utilises ETC's powerful hardware and software in order to deliver sophisticated effects including pixel mapping and media server control. The lighting control systems offer direct, intuitive operational style and can instantly recognise ETC syntax.

"The addition of the Gio console ensures our students can experience the very latest in lighting control consoles," commented Joseph Mercurio, lecturer in performance technology. "Having these up to date technical resources ensures students leave the VCA job ready and experienced."

Student Leslie Ding remarked, "The Gio is easy to learn due to ETC's operating system and it means we know one of the most common consoles in use; in fact we can be employed as Eos, Gio and Ion operators."

The Netherlands - Stadsschouwburg Theatre in Utrecht opened in 1941 and has become one of the best known theatres in the central Netherlands, staging a wide variety of shows from traditional theatre and cabaret, to dance, opera, circus and youth performances. It has two main auditoriums, which have 1000 and 225 seats, and is known for its high technical standards. It now boasts an ASL digital intercom system.

When Arnout Verdonk, Stadsschouwburg's sound technician, started looking for a new intercom system he put several to test, and the whole technical team was involved in making the right decision.

"We decided on the ASL digital system because of its flexibility and its ability to easily interface to our existing analogue intercom systems, wireless systems and 4-wire equipment," Verdonk explains. "We are a theatre with many different productions (more than 380

UK - As part of LOCOG's Supplier Recognition Scheme, Maltbury Staging has been recognised as Supplier of modular staging solutions (ExCeL) to the London 2012 Games.

"Actually," says Philip Sparkes, Maltbury's MD "this description tells only a small part of the story of Maltbury's involvement in the Games. We started with one contract and ended up supplying goods or services to half of the Olympic sports!"

Maltbury's story began with winning the tender for the contract to supply the stage and back wall for the Weightlifting competition. There was no technical specification for the platform so they first had to design the platform that LOCOG and the Olympic Weightlifting team wanted and then prove that they could deliver it. The same applied to the back wall, which gradually changed from a simple series of tall flats into a monolithic structure of almost 200m

UK - Watched by an estimated 1m viewers per week, the new series of Sky One's Got To Dance has once again packed a prime-time punch.

Designed for use on-screen, Le Mark's Harmony gloss black dance floor has been selected as the dancing surface for the semi-finalists' pre-recorded 'Killer Move' video clip.

The smooth finish of the floor allows for a controlled glide whilst retaining the perfect element of grip. An exceptional level of dancing comfort for performers and a stunning high-gloss visual-effect for the viewers at home.

Le Mark's Sharon Marshall said, "Keeping up with the fast paced performances and such varied dancing styles is no easy task for any dance floor. The robust yet forgiving nature of our Harmony Dance Floor is a key reason why it's one of our best sellers around the globe."

USA - When top production designer Baz Halpin walked past the SGM booth at the LDI Show in Las Vegas last November he was stopped in his tracks by the Danish company's new XC-5 colour strobes.

Responding to an invitation from the lighting manufacturer's US head, Randy Wade, he and Chris Nyfield, along with other members of the Silent House Productions team would probably have given little more than a cursory glance, as seeking out new strobes was probably furthest from their mind. "I was actually quite happy with the strobes we had been using - but as we walked past the SGM booth we were really taken by the strobes.

"I instantly loved the quality of the colours, the intensity, size and the low power consumption ... not to mention that the fixture could be more versatile than just a strobe," remarked the Irish born designer.

Norway - Artistic Licence Multichrome Tube LED fixtures have played a central part in the visual presentation of Isslottet at Den Norske Opera in Oslo where local distributor, Rubicon, supplied over 100 units to faciliate Øyvind Wangensteen's highly imaginative lighting and video design.

Isslottet ('The Ice Castle') is a modern ballet based on Tarjei Vesaas' book of the same name. Set to Terje Isungset's musical arrangement with choreography by Kristian Støvind, it tells the story of Siss and Unn, two teenage girls that find each other in an unlikely friendship. The story deals with issues of life and death, and how what once was light and delightful can turn dark and dangerous.

Wangensteen's design called for the creation of dripping 'ice taps' which could incorporate a 3D movement that was reflected in the high shine stage floor and formed a vital
