"The communications systems in the cars," he says, "are designed primarily with two factors in mind: intelligibility and reliability. The outcome of a race might hang on a driver hearing an instruction or warning clearly and being able to react instantly to it."
Garwood used its unique version of dual driver technology in combination with the custom earpieces. Dual driver technology (used in the company’s top-of-the-range Airstream in-ear monitors) employs two miniature accelerometer drivers in each transducer, while the earpiece is made of low profile silicon, a comfortable material for wearing throughout the length of a Grand Prix race.
"As well as using the dual driver design, we researched the exit characteristics of the audio channel and created a flare design that’s comfortable enough for race conditions and met all of Jordan Ford’s audio requirements," adds Lindop.
Garwood has also announced the award of a contract for in-ear dual driver earpieces for its second F1 client, British American Racing. BAR was formed in 1999 under the leadership of Craig Pollock with Jacques Villeneuve (1997 World Champion) as lead driver.
