Mexico - For the celebrations to mark 200 years since Mexico's independence from Spain (and 100 years since the revolution), Sebastian Corkidi's event staging company, Simply Professional, were at the centre of activity.

Specialists in producing outdoor events on a large scale, the company was commissioned to provide the technical infrastructure for the massive $60 million Government-run event at the imposing Zocalo main square in Mexico City. This featured a display of aerial acrobatics (choreographed by Ric Birch), fireworks, rock music and parades, attended by tens of thousands of people.

Having worked with PR Lighting fixtures for the past six years he knew that lighting designer Victor Zapatero would find everything he needed to bring the concept to life, from within Simply Professional's inventory.

Alex Hitchcock, training development manager at Stage Technologies with two decades of training and automation programming under his belt, has written and collated the draft version of the automation NOS for technical theatre, in consultation with other industry stakeholders, and as part of the NOS development working group.

These NOS modules are now available on the CCSKills website and industry professionals are being actively encouraged to provide initial comment and consultations. UK - More than 3 million foreign tourists spent £2.8 billion on trips that included going to Britain's theatres last year, according to a new report from VisitBritain. Ten per cent of the 30 million overseas travellers who came to the UK in 2009 went to a stage show - ranging from classic Shakespeare in London to experimental fringe in Edinburgh, opera in Wales or a glitzy London musical.

It reveals that London dominated the theatre world with around 2.2 million foreign tourists spending £1.9 billion on trips involving the capital's theatres last year. The South-East followed, attracting 235,000 foreign theatre goers. The East of England, which features the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft, was next with 133,000 overseas theatre-goers.

Scotland, whose theatrical centres include Glasgow's Theatre Royal and Edinburgh's world famous Festival, attracted 120,000. The North-W

UK - Sales of Soundcraft's new Vi1 compact digital desk have immediately gone into overdrive, report UK and ROI distributors, Sound Technology, rapidly boosting inventories in both the rental and permanent install sectors.

In the latter category, Paul Duffy's Pacific Sound & Light have been quick to install a 32-input board at the new flagship Glee Club in Nottingham - a hybrid theatre which hosts, comedy and an eclectic mix of both emerging and established song-based artists.

Pacific recommended the desk to Glee Club owners, Comic Enterprises, after working on the resident 'parent' Soundcraft Vi6 console at the O2 Arena's IndigO2 while on tour last year. This led to an invitation for a demo at the Soundcraft HQ.

At the same time, SSE Audio Group had also been speaking to Pacific, which resulted in Jon Nash, the venue's production manager, heading across the Midlands to atte

Japan - Japanese Folk Music is stark, beautiful, and demands to be exquisitely realized. "The reasons are bound in history," explained Mr Sato from M audio labo, a specialist pro audio rental company based in Komaki near Nagoya. "The instruments used, for example the Japanese harp or O-koto, the flute (Fue), and especially the Shamisen, our traditional three string banjo, all differ slightly from region to region. The tuning and tonality from each region exhibit subtle variations; being able to discern them is what excites audiences most."

M audio labo had recently supplied a sound system for just such a special folk music event; staged for an audience of 7,500 people at the Sun Dome in Fukui; the concert was a private function for an important local bank. "It's a very large room, not normal for such recitals. We knew we needed something special to trans

Abba Anger - Abba stars Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have criticised the far-right Danish People's Party (DF) for using their hit Mamma Mia at rallies. The band had threatened to sue the DF, saying the band never allowed their music to be used politically. But their record company, Universal, later said the DF had agreed to stop using the 1976 hit.

The youth wing of the party had changed the lyrics of the song to Mamma Pia, in honour of their leader Pia Kjaersgaard. The anti-immigration DF is the third largest party in the Danish parliament. Andersson said he found out about its use when he was contacted by a left-wing pressure group who asked whether he supported the party's policies. He said he and Mr Ulvaeus had instructed lawyers to start legal action against the party if they did not stop using the song immediately. "Firstly, you cannot just rewrite

USA - For over six decades, Doug Weston's The Troubadour has been a flagship venue of the American music industry. The famous club on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood has been the site of performances by top artists through rock history, including the Eagles, Elton John, James Taylor, Metallica, Franz Ferdinand, the Strokes and Guns N'Roses, who, like many classic artists, got their careers going as a result of performances there.

The Troubadour continues to be a vital link in the evolving American music industry and culture, and microphones from Audio-Technica have played a key role in keeping it that way. Bobby Crown, the FOH Mixer, production manager and system engineer for The Troubadour for the last seven years, brought an all-A-T package of microphones into The Troubadour in 2008 and they've been in use since.

Ireland - ETC's Republic of Ireland dealer Cine Electric has completed installation of two Eos control desks at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

Dave Carpenter, deputy head of lighting & sound at the theatre, says, "We were looking around for a replacement for our old desks, which were becoming old and difficult for our suppliers to support. Trying an Eos at ETC's offices in London proved it to be a perfect replacement. It had a familiar programming syntax, making it really easy to learn."

The theatre, which is the national theatre of Ireland, already had Cat 5 cabling installed, which meant that installation was as simple as plugging the desk into the gateways which Cine Electric installed around the venue. "I love the fact that the desk has direct select buttons," continues Carpenter. "They make programming so much quicker."
