UK - Lighting Technology Projects has supplied and commissioned architectural lighting for the Ten Pin Megabowl complex in Cambridge. Color Kinetics' ColorBlast 12 LED wash units were specified by the Nottingham-based lighting design practice Into Lighting, for the eye-catching installation in the venue's main hall. LTP's Terry Reeves worked closely on the project with designer Jonathan Rycroft. The wall-washing, colour changing fixtures were chosen for their design and uniform colour range.

Other factors were cost effectiveness and build quality, and also Lighting Technology's recommendation after using them on numerous other projects. Terry Reeves explains, "The ColorBlast 12 gave the right quality of light output and is also easily controllable." From the initial design brief, LTP worked with Into Lighting, creating several different solutions in a mock-up scenario. The end result, featuring the ColorBlast 12s, was a clear winner. From there 'LTP' liaised with the electrical contractors to supply and commission these and the other products in the scheme.

The lighting highlights the back wall of a busy video gaming area, slightly separated from the bowling alleys. The wall has a raised block-work design, which is up-lit with the 12 ColorBlasts. The creative effect is an interesting illuminated break-up to the room, separating the gaming area from the main bowling alleys and providing dynamic relief from the intensive environment of video screens and game sound effects.

LTP also supplied Anytronics RGBY four-colour 'DFB' (digital fluorescent ballasts) dimmable fluorescents, used as light sources for eight customized 5m wide overhead 'light boxes' in the Megabowl's main entrance. Designed by Into Lighting, the boxes are run off a Pulsar Masterpiece Replay unit, programmed with a series of different environmental and mood sequences, including the 'cosmic bowl' neon architectural effect.

The DFB fittings are ideal for the dimensions of the lightboxes and the broad spread of backlit light that was required. They offer an even wash across the length and width of the lightboxes, with the crucial element of DMX control protocol available via the DMX/DFB interface from Anytronics.
