Located on the Kei Myung University's Seongseo campus in Daegu, the Kei Myung Artcenter has a 1900-capacity auditorium, acting principally as a music and performing arts student facility, as well as hosting a variety of medium and large-scale visiting productions. Involving a total investment of some US $80m, the project commenced in January 2005, and has been operational since February this year.

Following the gala opening, the first major production will be the Korean musical The Last Empress, featuring lyrics by In Ja Yang, music by Hui Gap Kim, and sound design by the celebrated local sound director, Ki Young Kim. The musical Mamma Mia! is also scheduled to run towa

UK - The Chemical Brothers We Are The Night tour has just finished its second summer run - back by popular demand on the international festival and touring circuit this year, after enjoying massive success in 2007.

The show is renowned for its visuals - created by Adam Smith and stored and played back via a Catalyst digital media server.

Digital media specialists Projected Image Digital (PID) spoke to the Chemical Bros 2008 tour show programmer Matthew Button about his media server of choice. He sought a lightweight, fully portable solution for visuals storage and playback. Both he and lighting tech Toby Dennis invested in Mac Book Pros to which they fitted the latest 32Gb Mtron 2.5 inch solid state hard drives and installed the latest version of Catalyst. The Mtron is turbo-charged to give super-quick video access time.

The visuals show was originally programmed on a

UK - After 10 years of retirement from the entertainment lighting industry on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and as far north as Scotland, Joe Thornley felt the time was right to reminisce about his life before, and throughout, his long career in entertainment lighting.

Joe's autobiography is an interesting and amusing account of life as an electrical engineer, lighting equipment innovator and author. His story takes us through his childhood in London during the Second World War, his training as a bound apprentice, followed by an account of his time spent in North Africa during his National Service in the 1950s.

Most significantly, he describes his life-long experiences as a designer of entertainment lighting equipment for Mole Richardson, Berkey Colortran, Rank Strand and Lee Lighting.

Joe's easy-flowing, light-hearted style provides us with a look behind the lights of fi

UK White Light has continued its long-established collaboration with the Motley Design Course, once again supplying lighting equipment to the Course's annual exhibition of this year's students' work.

Founded in 1966 by Stephen Arlen, then managing director of Sadler's Wells Opera, and Margaret 'Percy' Harris, then the company's resident designer, the course was first known as the Sadler's Well Design Course. The course subsequently became the Theatre Design Course of the English National Opera until 1981, and after some time at the Riverside Studios, the Almeida Theatre and the Royal National Theatre Studio, the course acquired the name Motley and took up residence at its present home, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Every year the course selects up to 12 postgraduate-level students who wish to specialise in theatre design. The one-year course is project based, featuring five or

UK - One of the hottest topics in the lighting world at the moment is the green issue. Is tungsten dead? Is it possible to have a carbon neutral TV studio? Can you run theatre lighting on a wind turbine? The discussion that such topics generate will be just one of many at the 2009 Showlight event which takes place in Glasgow next May.

The Green issues will be debated by a panel of speakers that includes Fred Foster, CEO of ETC; at the other end of the spectrum Alex Wardle of Arup venue consulting will be taking a backward look to stage lighting in 1750, when the bleached beeswax candle was cutting edge, as he discusses how he re-created the feel of a candle-lit stage without actually using a naked flame.

The venue for 2009's Showlight is BBC Scotland's new state of the art headquarters, which boasts the latest broadcast technology. It is the biggest TV recording space to be bu

Ecuador - Robe ColorSpot 1200E AT moving lights have been specified and installed for a new water fountain show at La Alameda Park in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito. The Park was originally built in 1596, and has recently re-opened following a complete renovation, underwritten by the Mayor of Quito's Rescue Fund.

Robe's Ecuadorian distributor Prisma, also based in Quito, worked with several other companies to supply the technology needed for La Alameda's new-look water park, which has now been revitalised with a waterscreen and nightly lightshow designed by Alberto Borja.

The screen is 12m wide and 6m high. Three 20-minute multimedia shows run every Friday and Saturday night and the waterscreen is also used for special events.

A central control room is located in the middle of the fountains with control for all the technical elements which include water pumps and valves, movi

South Africa - Two years ago The Natal Playhouse in Durban upgraded its Opera Theatre with more than 64 Martin Professional intelligent lights and a Martin Maxxyz control desk from Martin distributor Electrosonic. This year the spotlight was turned on the Drama Theatre.

"We had such positive feedback from performers and patrons alike regarding the upgraded lighting in the Opera Theatre that we wanted to get the Drama Theatre up to the same level," said Dylan Heaton, lighting technician for the Playhouse. The Opera Theatre is the largest of the three theatres in the complex, with a seating capacity of 1,224 on three levels including a balcony - the Drama Theatre seats 474.

"The new equipment makes a great difference on all levels, not only adding to the quality of the shows, but also saving us significant time and money," says Heaton. "It used to take u

Iceland - Through local sales and integration company Exton, ETC is to supply Congo control systems, Sensor dimmers and Source Four luminaires for the new Icelandic National Concert and Conference Centre, which is set to open at the end of next year.

Probably the largest lighting and sound installation in Iceland to date, the project comprises four halls which will form a centre for music, culture and tourism. Scheduled to open at Reykjavik's East Harbour in December 2009, the centre will provide facilities for Iceland's continually expanding musical life and will be home to The Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

"The Icelandic National Concert and Conference Centre is a fantastic visionary project," says ETC's regional manager for northern Europe, Tim Stokholm. "Not only will the Icelandic people have a fantastic place for music and culture, but also companies globall

Italy - Miss Italia 2008, one of the highest profile Miss World qualifiers, featured the first use in Italy of Robe's new REDWash 3Ÿ192 LED wash luminaires. Director of Photography Fabio Brera specified over 200 Robe moving lights to be a core element of the lighting rig for the show - including 110 ColorWash 700E ATs, 55 ColorSpot 700E ATs, 27 ColorSpot 1200E ATs and 20 REDWash 3Ÿ192s.

This year's Miss Italia finals took place at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Salso Maggiore Terme, PR, Italy and were broadcast live on RAI 1 in a show directed by Maurizio Pagnussat.

The lighting rig was hung on a comprehensive network of trusses that were installed to cover the large stage and audience areas of the venue, with some fixtures on the floor.

Central to the set was a large sweeping staircase which, when lit, produced an appropriate depth of field for the cameras. In front of thi

No Laughing matter - Clowns appearing at a circus in Birmingham were silenced by licensing regulators who banned them from playing their trumpets. Zippo's Circus said Birmingham City Council officials told them the show could not go on unless the clowns dropped the musical part of their act.

The circus, performing in Calthorpe Park, Edgbaston, fell foul of the Licensing Act 2003. The act forbids the playing of live music without a licence. Circus owner Martin Burton said that applying for a licence was time-consuming and expensive and called for circuses to be exempt from the legislation. He said: "I'm a big fan of silent comedy, but this is nonsense."

Old Rocker News (1) - Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant has scotched rumours that he is to tour with the band, describing speculation as "frustrating and ridiculous". Last week, The Sun newspaper reported th

UK - Situated in London's O2 Arena, Matter - the latest club spin off from the successful Fabric brand - has opened its South-East-London-facing doors on a vast 3000-capacity space.

Central to the installed technology is a 16-channel TiMax audio delay matrix, which controls every channel of the main Room One sound system, including the subwoofers and the Bodysonic vibrating floor. Matter's sound and lighting design consultant, Dave Parry, says: "Before we even knew how the final system would work together, TiMax was always going to be integrated into it whatever we did."

Matter is designed around the Kandinsky principle: vibration, lighting and music all coming together as a whole to provoke a trance-like state. Parry explains: "The whole lot - lighting, video and sound - moves as an integrated whole so as a very basic example, say the club is lit blue, I can ta

China - Shenzhou VII, China's third manned spacecraft, successfully lifted off on 25 September at from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in Gansu province. The pride of China, the Shenzhou spacecraft, with astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng on board, orbited the earth for 68 hours over a three-day period.

Barco SLM R12+ projectors were used to command and control the entire launch programme at both the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre and Beijing Aerospace Control Centre. The monitoring continued through the duration of the spacewalk and concluded with its culmination, when the astronauts' re-entry module landed in central Inner Mongolia.

More than just delivering an advanced technology product in support of the event, Barco also provided on-site technical standby around the clock via a specially assigned technical team.

Romania - In collaboration with lunatX, Aquatique Show International, and Paradigma Production, tarm Showlaser staged the finale of the White Night 2008 in Bucharest in front of an audience of more than 100,000.

Against the backdrop of the impressive facade of the Casa Poporului (Parliament Palace), one of the world's largest buildings, the city's insignia hovered in the air in the form of full-colour laser projections on a large WaterScreen. Space-spanning laser beams, beam fans, and light tunnels criss-crossed the area. Massive fireballs and 40m high fountains lit the night sky, in tune with the music.

This was the tenth time that tarm Showlaser had staged a multimedia spectacle in the Rumanian capital city and the team tarm will be back in Bucharest in late October for another project.

USA - Sight & Sound Theatres has selected 10 Robert Juliat Super Korrigan followspots for its new venue in Branson, Missouri. A Christian theatre company based in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Sight & Sound Theatres is well known for its multimedia stage productions with Biblical themes.

"We brought in Juliat's Super Korrigans plus followspots from another manufacturer for a shootout on our main stage," says lighting designer Joe Basinger. "One of my goals was to get better colour temperature and gain than other followspots we have used. Our distances are half-way between long throw and really long throw, so we needed a happy medium. With Robert Juliat's Super Korrigan, gain and colour temperature are far superior to the other followspots we've seen."

Basinger deploys the lights, purchased through PRG Dallas, for any new production rotated into the theatr

France / USA - Rosco will show examples of its latest ranges of gobos at the forthcoming SIEL (Paris, 20-23 October) and LDI (Las Vegas, 24-26 October) trade shows. The collection has more than 400 designs: 194 new steel, 202 new Glass Spectrum and 12 new Effects Glass gobos, the company says. Among the 168 new standard steel designs are exclusive new designs offering breakups, foliage, window, architectural, geometrics, holiday, event and religious themes.

Rosco told L&SI: "In direct response to customer comments, and as a reflection of the changing trends in the use of moving lights and video projections, Rosco has more than doubled its range of standard glass gobo designs, adding over 200 new designs. These high quality images will vastly increase the tools a designer calls upon when specifying a rig of moving lights, or when merging gobo projections into a design filled

Canada - Wireless Solution Sweden's W-DMX was recently used to good effect in Pemberton, BC Canada, for Live Nation's Pemfest 2008 which featured two stages, two performance tents and camping for 40,000 people.

Mark Laughton of Viridian Power, the site power and lighting contractor for the event, worked on the project with Ian Gordon of Christie Lites Vancouver. Their aim was to have the ability to control the entire site so that when performers such as Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails and Tom Petty were playing, the ambient level across the sight could be reduced. Also, because of the size of the site, the ability to remotely increase or decrease light levels in zones for security or other purposes was an advantage if achievable.

Jason McKinnon from Electric Aura Lighting Design was consulted to see if W-DMX from Wireless Solution might be able to achieve this goal. The site was ext

France - Lighting effects from PR Lighting dominate the new nightclub, Le Sens, which opened recently in the French town of Moulins-Les-Metz.

The imaginative design scheme, created by Gerard Giraudon of ColorSonic, incorporates 10 of PR Lighting's Solo 250 effect - which took full advantage of the available space.

The Solo 250 features nine colours, seven interchangeable rotating gobos, an independent shutter for strobe effects, a rotating prism and remote focus. And with its stand-alone and master/slave operating modes (as well as conventional DMX) it suitable for a wide variety of applications.

Additionally, Gerard Giraudon's clever use of LED lighting strips at the bar counter ensures an ever-changing environment in this lively new venue.

USA - Melissa Etheridge makes no secret about her concern for the environment. For her 2008 Revival Tour, Etheridge's lighting director David Hamilton switched to a new LED fixture that saves energy, yet is so bright that a handful of units can light up an entire concert stage. The new fixture also creates less waste, since its lamps last for 100,000 hours, generating less throwaway for landfills.

That 'green' fixture is the Impression from Elation Professional, a compact LED moving head with RGB colour mixing. Powered by 90 high-power Luxeon K2 red, green and blue LEDs, the Impression produces a light output that's at least as bright as a 575W discharge fixture with no less than a 50% power savings, says the company.

Etheridge's tour manager Steve Girmont first saw the Impression at a trade show and brought it to the attention of Hamilton. "We were wanting to go L

UK - White Light has supplied and installed a complete new lighting system St John's, Smith Square. Located in the heart of Westminster, the hall regularly plays host to leading international performers. However, the venue's existing lighting system was a quarter of a century old and in poor condition.

To replace the system, White Light worked with lighting designer Mark Henderson to devise a system that provided the venue's concerts with the lighting they needed while also being versatile, easy to maintain and easy to control.

The new installation is based around a series of small lighting grids installed on winches to allow easy access to the equipment at ground level; the winches were installed for White Light by Unusual Rigging. The grids are fitted with 50 1kW fresnels from Robert Juliat, which provide bright, even lighting for the venue's concerts. "We chose the Jul
