USA - As energy concerns rise, LEDs have commanded much of the lighting world's attention.

"When we were first investigating the properties of commercially available LED wash fixtures," says Wybron director of technologies John Sondericker III, "it became obvious that the current offerings were poor in both the color rendering and the amount of light these fixtures produced. We surveyed some of the new and emerging LED technologies for what would be a generation ahead of the current offerings."

Wybron says that such new technologies have made possible the Wybron Cygnus 200W Wash, an LED luminaire . Cygnus is the first fixture on the market to incorporate red, green, blue and white elements housed in a single LED package. This technological adaptation allows colour mixing to occur in the lenses, rather that outside the fixture itself, and also eliminates dis

UK - The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released a consultation document outlining how it plans to implement a European Union (EU) Directive to protect workers from hazardous sources of artificial light.

Intense sources of artificial light in the workplace, particularly from UV radiation and powerful lasers can harm the eyes and skin of workers and need to be properly managed.

The Directive aims to ensure that standards are set and harmonised across the EU so all workers are protected from harm arising from exposure to hazardous sources of artificial light.

Workers in Great Britain are generally well protected from hazardous sources of light and the majority of businesses know how to manage these risks effectively. The draft regulations are designed to ensure that businesses do not face unnecessary additional burdens where there is no risk of harm to workers.

USA - Jason Lyons, lighting designer for the new Broadway musical Rock of Ages is using a full Martin MAC rig to visually energize the rock love story.

Playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, one of the ideas of the show, says Lyons, was to have a flavour of 1980s rock lighting, "par can rock" as he calls it. He started by creating a configuration of MAC 2000 Washes that worked both theatrically and looked great in the air for the show's big numbers.

"The 2K Washes are amazing and punchy and perfect for this kind of task," he comments. "What we really needed was the ability to cut through the washes in a big way, both for punchy aerials and very powerful specials within full stage looks. The MAC III Profile fit the bill perfectly. Even with dense templates and saturated colour, the MAC IIIs really stood out as a major part of the stage picture.&

Taiwan - GlacialTech is launching the GlacialLight GL-BR20 (5W)AC-LED high brightness globe for AC light sockets. The long life LED bulb (20,000hrs) has a high luminous efficacy and reduces environmental degradation through cost effective energy savings and CO2 reductions, says the company.

The BR20 lights use standard E26/E27 type, GU10 type and B22 type sockets. There are two models released - one for 110V AC and the other one for 220V AC. The sockets are specially designed so the LED can fit any lamp fixture. The GL-BR20 LED lamp is used for home security, flood lighting, spot lighting, accent lighting and local lighting, and with the special AC LED, it does not require a DC driver, reducing costs considerably.

The new LED lamp series from GlacialLight is also able to support the dimming function. Allowing a more diverse product to satisfy more customers.

Australia - For almost 15 years, Crown Towers has been leading the way for luxury accommodation in Melbourne. Located on the southern side of the Yarra River, the hotel serves the casino and the Crown entertainment complex.

In order to maintain its reputation in hotel luxury, Crown Towers recently underwent a refurbishment of all suites in the luxurious 28-storey hotel. The design of the new layout included new carpet, new furniture, new light fixtures and changing the old switching and pot dimmers to a dimming control system.

After a competitive and extensive testing process, Lightmoves was selected to supply and commission the Australian-made Dynalite lighting control system for the entire hotel.

The DDMC802 multi-purpose controller was also a major reason that Dynalite was specified for the project, due to its versatility. The controller allows the flexibility of running

UK - When the Royal Albert Hall decided to create a new performance space within its landmark building, it was to entertainment lighting supplier White Light that it turned to help with the process, calling on the company to provide a lighting, AV and technical infrastructure for the new, multi-function Elgar Room.

USA - Elation Professional will be introducing an intelligent spot/wash moving head "like no other seen before" at LDI 2009 in Orlando. The new Platinum Spot 5R emits an output comparable to a 575-watt fixture, yet it's half the size, uses less than half the energy, and weighs half as much as a typical 250-watt fixture, says the company. It also moves faster on pan and tilt, as well as on colour/gobo changes.

In comparison to a 250-watt fixture, the Platinum Spot 5R not only weighs 50% less, but blasts out twice the output, uses 25% less energy, while measuring 2/3 the size.

This ability to obtain 575-watt-like brightness in such an incredibly small, fast, energy-efficient package is something that designers and lighting installers have constantly asked for, said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. The Platinum Spot 5R represents a giant advance

Denmark - Martin Professional has teamed up with Wybron to offer an innovative lighting feedback system based on the industry-standard feedback protocol Remote Device Management (RDM).

Called Martin RADAR, an acronym for Remote Access Diagnostics And Reporting, the information feedback and monitoring system enables users to communicate with lighting fixtures by gathering lighting fixture data remotely and sending it to operators for immediate attention. It allows troubleshooting and fixture repair to be completed in minutes instead of hours, cutting down on expensive repair time and increasing productivity and ROI.

Martin RADAR uses RDM to collect fixture data from an installed system - or from a rig before and during a show - and then modifies it if needed (DMX, lamp, fixture status, etc.). It enables checking lighting equipment and diagnosing any problems from the convenien
