UK - GDS recently exhibited at the ABTT show for its fifth consecutive year. The event saw GDS win the ABTT Lighting Award of the Year, become the sponsor of the new Student of the Year Award for The Stage Managers Association and collect its Theatres Trust People's Choice Award which was won at PLASA 2010.

Italy - Creating a celebration of light, lighting designer Paul Cocksedge has used 80 ETC Selador Classic Ice fixtures in an exhibition space as part of the Salone del Mobile home furnishing exhibition in Milan.

The project involved projecting light from the blue part of the colour spectrum from concealed Selador fixtures onto a the 25m long, curved, white wall extension of a lighting showroom in the heart of Milan's design district; when visitors viewed the wall through a red light shade, a previously hidden video of a car appeared to the viewer.

Cocksedge says: "I was very ambitious about what I was proposing; we were really pushing the boundaries of what is achievable. I wanted a lot of light, and a very certain, precise light. Only the Selador Ice unit gave that precision. When I first came up with the idea to use light in this way, I was put in touch with Adam Bennet

UK - LEDHead EPW is the new multi-function LED moving head from MilTec (UK).

The LEDHead EPW uses the latest LED technology to give a moving head with true spot and wash capabilities, says the company. The 60W white LED light engine, colour wheel, two gobo wheels and rotating prism provide the spot functions.

Wash lighting is provided by 8x high powered tricolour LEDs situated at the front of the unit. This allows both functions to be used independently or simultaneously, giving many possibilities for creative lighting design.

In addition to these functions the tricolour LEDs are arranged in four zones to provide visual effect capabilities.

Italy - Over 350sq.m of Pixled LED screen is being used to spectacular effect on the latest sold-out stadium tour by Italian superstar Vasco Rossi - Live Kom '011 - specified by lighting and visuals designer, Giovanni Pinna.

The Pixled F-25 and F-37L surfaces were purchased by Milan based AV Rental company Event Management specially for the tour, and supplied to them from Pixled Europe's HQ in Belgium. It's Event Management's first investment in the Pixled brand - although the company has used it on shows in the past.

For the Rossi tour, 14 columns of Pixled F-37L are positioned in two sections of seven either side of the stage at the back. These are on a Cyberhoist automation system that moves them between level 1 (the stage) and level 2 of the set. They can also move apart into seven individual segments or be run as one large surface per side.

Ireland - Robe moving lights proved themselves to be a robust and reliable choice of moving light for any festival situation, with over 100 used on the main stage plus many more around the site at the 2011 Oxegen Festival in County Kildare.

True to form, the skies opened and it pelted with rain throughout the first day of the event, turning the site at Punchestown Racecourse into a slightly sticky, mud-tastic experience - which didn't dampen any of the vibes.

The highprofile festival is promoted by the country's largest concert and live event organisation, MCD and this year it featured a strong line-up.

Dublin-based rental company Just Lite's relationship with MCD's Denis Desmond stretches back over 20 years, and the company headed by Paul and Alan Smith has been involved with lighting the festival for the last 11 years, when it was originally launched as Witnness in 2000. O

Australia - The Port Fairy Folk Festival is held in early March each year over the Labour Day long weekend on the south-west coast of Victoria in the historic sea-side village of Port Fairy. Australia's 'world famous' independent music festival presents major international and national folk, trad and roots music artists during a four day festival of folk, country, Celtic, blues, jazz, bluegrass, traditions, contemporary, singers, songwriters, acoustic rock and world roots music.

Geelong-based Total Events provided lighting, staging, transport, rigging and AV requirements for the festival across six venues. 2011 was the 35th year of Port Fairy Folk Festival and Total Events managing director Scott Parker has provided various levels of production to the event for over 15 years.

Russia - Clay Paky's new narrow beam, the Sharpy, has been given its first airing on Russian television following an appearance on Star Factory, a reality TV talent show broadcast on Russia's Channel One. Mixing elements of Pop Idol and Big Brother, the contest aims to nurture the next generation of singing talent with help from pop industry veterans.

Star Factory lighting designer Leonid Pozdnyanskiy made up his mind to use the Sharpy after viewing a demonstration at the studio organised by Clay Paky distributor DOKA.

"We are pleased that Channel One allowed us to promote Sharpy on Star Factory," says DOKA's Vasily Litvin, brand manager for Clay Paky. "Sharpy has found an instant fan base here in Russia; those in the studio were absolutely amazed by the output, and we expect great things from this fixture in the Russian market

Argentina The Teatro Argentino de La Plata was recently furnished with a grandMA2. Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin was the first production to use the grandMA2 ultra-light and premiered perfectly in front of an enthusiastic audience.

Prof. Juan Carlos Greco, technical director comments, "As we needed a very flexible and powerful control, it was logical to go with the grandMA2 as the console offers control for moving lights, conventionals as well as video. Furthermore it features a great back-up solution and fast programming tools."

UK - PLASA Events has announced the first details of the PLASA 2011 Education and Learning Programme, which runs on all four days of PLASA 2011, at Earls Court in London from 11-14 September 2011.

Headlining the programme is the 2011 Gottelier Masterclass presented by last year's winner of the Gottelier Award and one of the best known designers in the industry, Fred Foster. The theme of his talk will be a huge draw since his title is A Call To Arms - We Must Protect the Quality of Light.

Says Foster, "Faced with the headlong rush towards 'energy efficient' lighting, we as an industry must join together to defend the quality of light. While we have a duty to make and use more efficient sources of light, we must also work to ensure that these sources provide the beautiful full spectrum of light." San Francisco's City Hall was the venue for a recent private party. The main floor interior was bathed in dramatic colours by LiteWareHO (High Output),GDS's wireless LED battery-powered uplighter.

Allegra Entertainment & Events, a full-service entertainment, production and event-planning firm in Burlingame, California and a preferred vendor for, the City of San Francisco, teamed up with award-winning Little Rock-based interior designer Kaki Hockersmith for the event. The BBC2 chat show, which will be airing its second series at the end of July, welcomes different celebrity guests each episode to come along, chat, play games and sometimes sing with the Welsh comedian.

USA - Active Production and Design full-service production company took a bold step into a new cutting-edge design concept, when it added an LED video screen to its impressive warehouse of A-V, lighting, special effects, staging and set design offerings.

Billed by the company as 'the largest LED wall in Georgia', the new video screen is comprised of EVLED 1024SMD 20mm LED panels from Elation Professional. Each of the IP65-rated panels features 1024 pixels made of 3-in-1 SMD Tri-Color LEDs (red, green, blue), capable of creating over 14 trillion colours. Chile - Teatro Municipal de Las Condes in Santiago de Chile, regarded as one of the finest theatres in Chile, has purchased a quantity of Robe ColorSpot and ColorWash 700E AT moving lights, which were supplied by Robe's Chilean distributor Valook in a deal co-ordinated for them by Leo Macaya.

The first use of the new lights was by the theatre's resident lighting designer, Yury Canales for a high profile production of the classic musical Cabaret recently staged at the venue.

Teatro Municipal de Las Condes prides itself on high quality production values, and had been looking to invest in the latest moving light technology for some time to replace their existing stock. They underwent a lengthy evaluation process from which Robe was the brand selected.

UK - After several months in the planning, news of an exciting new feature exclusive to PLASA 2011 has been announced - a major shoot-out of leading LED lighting fixtures, hosted by the STLD (Society of Television Lighting and Design).

Lighting Designer Paul Middleton has teamed the STLD with PLASA to bring visitors a unique tradeshow experience, where they will be able to directly compare LED lighting fixtures in three different areas of the 240sq.m space.

Middleton comments, "The STLD has been looking at staging a major LED-based event for some time now, having previously organised events at Pinewood Studios and elsewhere on the topics of consoles, moving heads and generic lights. We felt it was the right time to do another event and LED lighting was the obvious subject, basing the event on the simple question: 'can you light a TV set entirely with LED fixtures?'"<

Czech Republic - Every four years, the International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT) collaborates with the Prague Quadrennial, the world's largest festival of Scenography to present Scenofest, an educational project of performances, workshops and special projects for students from across the world.

Part of this year's festival - held in June - was Six Acts, a collection of educational and artistic projects created by international groups of artists that were staged at cultural sites throughout the city. ETC lent a variety of lighting equipment to Scenofest that was used during several of the Six Acts and in student workshops.

Currently in design phases, the Bank of China Tower will be comprised of two structures, a 100m tower and a low building with generous perimeter exposure, advantageously located between two canals in the city.

Pei Partnership Architects, who have a history with Bank of China, have set out distinctive and sophisticated plans for the Bank of China Tower in Suzhou, drawing on simplicity and clean lines to reflect the strength and dignity of the banking giant.

UK - The BBC show, Tonight's The Night is now in its third series and still presented by West End star John Barrowman.

Richard Martin Lighting (RML) continues to support lighting designer Roger Williams on the show which is filmed at BBC Glasgow. Tom Sutherland programmed and graphics were provided by Potion Pictures which were run off two Hippo Grasshoppers.

The lighting rig, incorporates a heavy variety of the Clay Paky range - Alpha Spot 575 HPE, Alpha Beam 700 and Alpha Wash 300s.

When the Nomination phase closes on Friday 29 July, the shortlist will be announced and voting - open to PLASA Members, as well as PLASA Show Exhibitors and Pre-Registered Visitors - will begin on Monday 1 August.

This prestigious award is presented each year during the PLASA Show to someone who has made "a significant and sustained contributions to the advancement of entertainment, presentation or installation technology - whether in audio, lighting, rigging, staging, or any other related field".

The Award was introduced in memory of Tony Gottelier, the highly respected lighting designer, product developer and industry commentator who passed away in 2006.

Theatres at Risk - The Theatres Trust has called on local communities to fight to save theatre buildings which are at risk. Some 58 UK buildings are on the trust's 2011 'at risk' register, with the Brighton Astoria and London's Cochrane Theatre among those facing demolition. It said it hoped legislation, including the new Localism Bill, would empower groups and individuals to "take on the guardianship of theatres at risk".

Theatres in Wallsend, Alsager, Ayr and Glasgow were all recently demolished. The at risk register also features theatres threatened by neglect, local development, funding cuts and closure. The trust said this year's register highlighted the impact of austerity measures over the past year.
