Puerto Rico - Yanni sets himself apart by choosing historical places for his live recordings: previous settings include the Acropolis in Greece, the Taj Mahal in India, the Forbidden City in China and the Royal Albert Hall in the UK.

His most recent concert and DVD recording took place in another majestic location, at Castillo San Felipe del Morro in Puerto Rico. The front wall of the fortress became the central visual attraction for the two-day concert and recording acting as a background for the stage positioned in front on the grass near the ocean. "The concept was to illuminate the wall of El Morro, as the fort was the main part of the scenography," said lighting designer Bud Horowitz.

"Yanni has been waiting 20 years to perform at El Morro," continued Horowitz. "The advantage of working with Chauvet LED products was the ability to play with colour

Europe - Martin Professional's new 1000 W MAC Viper Profile successfully debuted on the first European stadium leg of Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto world tour with lighting / production designer Paul Normandale reporting: "I've found my 1200W replacement and what's more - I can lift it!"

The new MAC Viper Profile is the first fixture in Martin's 1000 W MAC Viper family of automated luminaires. In May, Normandale field-tested the fixture on a string of European Coldplay shows alongside a host of other MAC fixtures - MAC 2000 Beam XBs, MAC 700 Profiles, MAC 250 Beams and MAC 101s.

"The Vipers were used to light the LED screen fascias, for which they needed to be bright and have a considerable zoom, which they did very well," Normandale stated, adding that he plans to put more Viper Profiles on the rider when the tour returns to Europe in late August. Lighting

USA - The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's new international terminal, the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal, features an art installation entitled Light Waves: Atlanta, a large-scale art installation by Christopher Janney, artistic director for PhenomenArts, Inc. The piece, part of the Airport Art Programme, is one of five works for the new terminal.

The piece, described by Janney as "an abstraction of Georgia in colour and sound", features 32 Chauvet Intimidator Scan LED 300 scanners, 68 horizontal panes of coloured glass - stacked in 17 sections with four panes in each section - along a 160ft hallway. As the light from the recessed fixtures in the ceiling passes over the glass, it reflects and refracts creating a continuously changing pattern of colour on the wall.

Janney, who is a trained architect and jazz musician, composed

USA - Environmentally friendly Clay Paky Sharpy met eco-inspired GreenWaves III recently, the third annual event at the University of Central Florida (UCF) that implements environmental and social best practices to promote the need for conscious sustainable solutions.

Lighting designer Justin Geiger of California-based Impulse Creative Group used 16 Sharpys for the concert portion of the event, which featured electronic artists and notable DJs. It was billed as the first interactive concert at UCF and took sustainability to the next level by utilizing a PowerLeap dance floor, which uses "Piezo" flooring technology to convert the energy from the crowd into reusable energy for the concert.

Geiger deployed his complement of Sharpys on the main stage at the UCF Arena. "We used them on the wings, flanking a 40ft projection wall and had four on the stage," he rep

South Africa - South Africa's largest performance venue has invested in 77 new Philips Selecon SPX luminaires. The 1,300-seat State Theatre, in the heart of Pretoria, chose the fixtures for its front of house positions to ensure its high profile national and international visiting theatre, opera and ballet companies get the sharp, clean front of house washes and projections they expect.

The theatre complex comprises six venues including a main opera venue, a drama venue and two theatre spaces and receives numerous number one tours from around the world.

Philips Entertainment brand partner DWR Distribution supplied the SPX luminaires to local installer Muthiyane Trading. Duncan Riley of DWR says: "The Philips Selecon's SPX range delivers more light to the stage for its energy consumption (up to 63% more than current industry benchmarks). This allows venues to consider ener

South Africa - Once again Wayne Sproule from Pendragon Dezign was in charge of the technical facets of the PSL Awards, a live broadcast, hosted at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City on 27 May 2012. The event incorporated over 50 Robe fixtures.

"I still get excited about working on events," commented Sproule. "If I didn't, it would be time to pack up. It is estimated that viewership for this live production was 14m million, and apparently it was the number one tweeted subject between 8pm to 10pm that evening."

A rare occurrence was that for once there was more than enough time for the set up, but what really made it a success were the people involved. "I just love working with this team," said Sproule. "There is no drama, everyone gets on with it. I call them 'The Wrinkle Rockers Road Show,' and while there is fun and laughter, nothing is a pro

USA - Located at the new Marlins Park, The Clevelander, an innovative version of The Clevelander South Beach, utilizes nine Chauvet Professional moving heads to bring a taste of South Beach to the ballpark.

The venue allows for approximately 250 guests to access field level seats, while also providing a full bar, pool and live DJ set featuring professional dancers and body painting.

Tasked with lighting The Clevelander, Louie Uribe identified the back walls as canvases to create wall art on. At first, he selected nine Chauvet Professional Q-Spot 260-LED moving heads "to experiment with because of their affordability, but we really love them".

He plans to implement more Chauvet Professional Q-Spot 260-LED moving heads at the Marlins Park location as well as The Clevelander South Beach location. "There are a lot of new fixtures out there, but Chauvet is head on

Ireland - Westlife played two highly emotional farewell concerts over two nights at Croke Park stadium in Dublin in their very last live performances, capping a 14 year chart-topping, multi-million record selling career.

Lighting for this - and the six week tour preceding the two 85,000 capacity sold out shows at Croke Park - was supplied by UK lighting and visuals rental company HSL. It included nearly 200 moving lights.

The lighting design was created by Dave 'Biccie' Lee and operated on the tour at Croke Park by Simon Horn. Mike Oates project managed for HSL, who were working for the tour's technical production co-ordinators Production North, under the auspices of production manager Karen Ringland.

Says Mike Oates, "We were immensely proud to work on this tour and the two landmark Croke Park shows. The show was absolutely stunning and a real tribute to all involved i

France - Lighting designer Sarah Landau has turned to Martin Professional's award-winning MAC Aura LED wash light, along with MAC 700 Profiles, Atomic 3000 strobes and Martin LC Series LED video panels, to light French electronic band M83's current world tour.

Touring in support of their latest album, "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming," Landau's design recalls 'a vision of the future as imagined in the past' with elements like laser tag arenas, late 80s school supply graphic design (Trapper Keepers, Lisa Frank...), and old sci-fi flicks as her inspiration.

"The first tours included a simpler LED mover," she explains, "but as the shows grew, I was able to upgrade to the Aura. I love the look of its bubbly face and felt it would fit really well with the retro-futuristic look of the show. When zooming, it resembles a little alien with compound eyes.

USA - The new ELAR Quad Series from Elation Professional has been designed and built for rugged "production use" and utilizes high-power 10W CREE LEDs with extreme optics Quad-Color Technology, for bright output and the highest quality, most advanced colour mixing, while offering pixel control for extreme LED matrix effects, says the company.

Each of the ELAR Quad Series units' Quad-Color 10W CREE MC-E multi-chip LEDs contains four different colour sources (red, green, blue, white), allowing mixing to be done inside each lens optic. This 4-in-1 configuration produces more smoothly blended colours and eliminates the distractive RGB shadows often associated with single-color LEDs. For even more precise colour-mixing accuracy, the ELAR Quad Series features a Single Pixel Control Mode, giving designers pinpoint control over color production down to the level of individual

UK - From the very first moments of 2012, high-output LED lighting fixtures from Leader Light were in action - and they have continued to be in demand through the rest of the year.

Leader's LL Stage6-06DW 'Beam' fixtures saw in the New Year at one of the planet's biggest New Year Parties - Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party, which welcomed over 80,000 revellers. Black Light of Edinburgh lit both the East End and West End stages at the event, with the Leader fixtures used on the West End Princes Street stage and used to light acts including Wild Beasts and Friendly Fires.

Black Light's Phil Haldane explains, "We used the Leader Beams in place of Par38 ACLs. They are a very nice, compact unit effectively producing a nice tight white beam with minimal power consumption. They are also highly flexible, allowing individual control of each cell. This allowed us to pixel map the u

USA - Fox TV's American Idol 2012 season finale on 22 May declared contestant Phillip Phillips the winner. Then it was time for the after show bash at the Event Deck at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. Kinetic Lighting was in charge of the party ambience, providing a rig that included 200 lights and a half-dozen effects fixtures, controlled with a High End Systems Road Hog console.

The Event Deck at L.A. Live is a 106,000 sq. ft. space that includes a 42,000sq.ft tent. Kinetic's Project Manager/LD Rachel Miller and Programmer Eric Barth worked together as the lighting team for the night.

Their choice of console began with the design brief, Miller says. "The Idol finale party called for dark, moody effects. The ability to physically see every color on the screen in front of us on the Road Hog was helpful in creating my palette."

Miller chose the Road Hog co

UK - When the eyes of the world are upon you, you need to be shown in your best light! And what higher profile could you have than the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert, held on 4 June 2012 outside the gates of Buckingham Palace before an audience of over 10,000 people and broadcast to millions of viewers worldwide?

On a stage designed by Mark Fisher with a backdrop of the palace itself, lighting designer, Durham Marenghi, worked his magic to create a spectacular lighting show worthy of the occasion, balancing the light from 240 moving lights, 36 20K projectors, and a wrap-around LED backdrop.

Marenghi specified five Robert Juliat Lancelot 4000W HTI followspots as the main stage key lights to pick out the performers and presenters on stage. These included a variety of artists from the past 60 years, from relative newcomers, Ed Sheeran and Jesse J, to veterans such as Cliff Richa

South Africa - The new Soweto Theatre in Johannesburg has been fitted out with over 200 ETC Source Four luminaires, including 72 Source Four Fresnels.

Supplied by Johannesburg-based ETC dealer Prosound, the Source Four luminaires provide the workhorses in the main auditorium and almost entirely account for the overhead rigs in the two studio spaces.

"ETC Source Four Fresnels were a late entry into the competition," says Denis Hutchinson, theatre consultant on the project. "ETC flew a unit out to South Africa for me to test and I was very pleasantly surprised. To the eye at least the output is comparable to a 1200W Fresnel and of course you are only running 750W, so from the green perspective it's a better unit. They are very nicely and solidly built and the way in which the lamp is housed is very solid.

"I think they will work very well for this venue; an

South Africa - Robe moving lights have been specified and installed at the new Soweto Theatre. The Robes - 30 Robin 300 LEDWashes and 12 Robin 600E Spots - were specified by lighting designer Denis Hutchinson, who acted as lighting consultant for the whole project which has been three years in the making.

The fixtures will be used in the Theatre's three performance spaces - a 420 seat main pros arch auditorium and two studio venues of 180 and 90 capacities respectively. Says Hutchinson: "Robe is a very solid and reliable brand in my experience, and units certainly need to be robust in this environment, where they will be in almost daily use for many different scenarios."

Day-to-day, the new lighting system is being looked after by house Lighting Technician Nkululeko Mazibuko, who trained at Johannesburg's landmark Market Theatre, and has had considerable experience a

UK - Ambersphere Solutions has recently worked with Entec Sound & Light to supply a number of GlowUp fixtures used for a premium jewellery product showcase.

The showcase, which took place at One Marylebone, London, was one of the first times that the Clay Paky GlowUp has been specified for a UK event. Since then, these fixtures, supplied by Ambersphere Solutions to Entec, have been chosen for use on several other product launches.

Entec's customer Seen Presents, a London based creative events and experiential agency, who produced the jewellery showcase, were quite clear about what kind of lighting fixture they required. "The team at Seen Presents was very specific' states Ryan Brown from Entec. "They wanted battery-powered, easily controllable uplighters." Armed with this knowledge, Entec quickly came to the conclusion that the new lightweight portable Clay Paky

Germany - Sixty Four Robe MMX spots were used on the largest show of the German Neonsplash Paint Party tour, a new concept from Miami that fuses the best dance sounds and DJs with the visual spectacle of dancers stilt walkers, aerialists, all wrapped up in one super adrenalized party vibe.

The highlight of the evening comes when the audience - in white dress code - are splattered with UV-active paint via a series of compressed air canons placed around the room to provide the colour as the scene changes from monochrome to glorious Technicolor.

Event producers for the German leg of the tour included Whateversclever from Hamburg and technical solutions provider Rec-Tec SFX & Technic Solutions from Sinzig who joined forces to present Nonsplash at the 10,000-capacity Essener Grugahalle.

Taking the party out of clubs and into large arenas called for a completely different concept

World - Ayrton reports that more than 65 Wildsun 500C automated LED luminaires are being used on Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band's Wrecking Ball world tour.

Award winning Lighting Designer, Jeff Ravitz, of Intensity Advisors in Los Angeles and Morpheus Lights, the Las Vegas based lighting production company, selected the Wildsun 500C from Ayrton after extensive testing and comparisons to other automated LED fixtures.

"It's a strikingly different look for our show - the warm white baseline, vivid colours, smooth movement, and remarkable intensity of the Wildsun 500C are truly unique" says Ravitz.

The Wrecking Ball tour began in Atlanta, Georgia in mid-March and continues in European cities from mid-May through July 2012. It then returns to the US for additional Stadium shows in August and September.

USA - Fans of the NFL's Tennessee Titans will return to LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee, this season to find a completely renovated stadium featuring a new distributed sound system using all EAW components. What they won't realize is that the entire system was specified, manufactured and delivered in record time, only months before scheduled completion of the renovation in mid-July, just in time for pre-season games.

Basing the system on the design by Dallas, Texas' Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc.

(WJHW), EAW worked closely with WJHW to provide the customised system for LP Field, meeting an extremely tight deadline. The WJHW-designed distributed system replaces the stadium's former point-source PA.

Over the course of the project, EAW was able to schedule manufacturing and delivery of components, including 96 TT12Si-T64-PL-WP custom-engineered enclosures; over 36

Ireland - Production Services Ireland (PSI) supplied lighting, trussing and rigging for the 2012 Live At The Marquee event in Cork, which ran for a month, offering a diverse line up of international artists - from Justice to Christy Moore, Jedward to Jessie J - and many more to cater for all tastes.

It's one of Cork's largest annual events and the second year that PSI has been the lighting supplier, after delivering such a smooth and successful package last year. It was project managed for them by Ciaran Tallon, with the equipment coming out of the company's Dublin facility.

With the range of artists appearing, an overall production lighting design was created by client Conor Jacob, with the idea that it was as flexible as possible to provide a solid platform for lighting all of the performers and genres of music.

The stage was 20m wide and 11 deep and the trim went f

France - The Erasme hall at the Congress Centre in Strasbourg, home of the Strasbourg Philharmonique Orchestra, has upgraded its stage lighting to an ADB Lighting LED system, designed to lower power consumption and heat on stage, and provide more uniform and flexible lighting.

By the summer of 2009 it had become clear to the Congress Centre operators that a new solution was urgently needed. The original lighting system, dating from the 1970s, consisted of 14 5kW Fresnel luminaires, suspended from telescopic poles left and right of the orchestra podium. 30 1kW tungsten halogen floodlights were rigged 10 meters above the stage to fill in shadows.

In total, over 100kW of power was used to light an orchestral performance or rehearsal, plus the power drawn by the air-conditioning (HVAC) system. The tungsten halogen light sources raised the stage temperature to around 20°, which
