USA - Thousands of venues around the globe have staged West Side Story, but none have approached the musical like the 49-seat Chance Theater in Anaheim, California. The theatre is doing West Side Story with a modern lighting twist: an all-LED rig, featuring ETC's latest lighting innovations. The goal of the show is to demonstrate how to use ETC LED fixtures to achieve the look of a conventionally-lit show - with full-spectrum colour and naturally-rendered flesh tones - while achieving huge energy savings in a small theatre.

Show director Oanh Nguyen wanted to present a gritty, contemporary version of the classic West Side Story, so he and lighting designer KC Wilkerson discussed using a rig of practical, industrial fixtures - fluorescent, metal-halide, sodium - to achieve an edgier lighting design. Serbia - Robe moving lights - Robin 600 LEDWash and Robin 600E Spots - have been specified and installed at the Serbian national broadcaster RDU RTV Vojvodine's main studios in Novi Sad, together with LEDForce 18s from the Light4ce range.

These were supplied by Robe's Serbian distributor Studio Berar Projekt. The decision to go with Robe fixtures for the TV station was a collective one, made by all the lighting designers, DoPs, technicians and engineers involved in lighting their busy schedule of programmes.

Day to day, the new lights are being looked after by chief lighting technician, Irinej Hudak. They are currently being used on one of the most popular current affairs programmes on Serbian TV, Tabloid with Saša and Nataša.

The programme is co-hosted by its originator Aleksandar (Saša) Filipovi?, together with Nataša Ili?-Jovanovi? and is celebrating its 16th g

UK - Laserworld will launch the new Pure Micro Series, a compact laser system that eliminates the need for 'truck loads of equipment for one single laser system': With a size of 18,6x16,5x12,5cm these units are very small yet 'extremely strong'.

Up to 2.3W RGB, 6W green and 10W blue can be supplied in this new system, together with an accurate 50kpps Xscan galvos, making the unit ideal for beam shows, graphics and advertisement applications.

"Of course it is possible to extend even the possibilities by upgrading the units to CT-6210HP scanners for high professional use. High precision is decisive for proper graphics scanning, but also for better beam visibility. That's why the PM-1300RGB and the PM-180

Gray is a well-known international fashion show lighting designer, and has worked with both Bacchus and their clients, the British Fashion Council on many other projects.

His starting point for the design on this one was a very attractive clean, streamlined set designed by Bacchus including white stretched material 'walls,' bench seats and large white flats for backdrops in the main room at the Hospital Club, for which the exterior walls were draped in black for contrast and to enhance the clean cut look.

"It was a simple, modular and extremely pleasant environment to light," comments Gray who c

Italy - Lighting designer Aldo Visentin is using his own Jands Vista S1 lighting console running the next generation Vista v2 software, plus two Vista M1 Wings, to control lighting for tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Visentin's creative relationship with Bocelli started in 2006 and this tour's natural innovative design contains lots of subtleties, with slow colour changes and no visible movement. It is operated completely 'live' every night using the Vista's powerful visual interface and just a few pre-programmed presets. This allows Aldo the creative freedom to reflect the spirit of the evening in the lighting, and flow organically with the mood of the set.

Rather non-conventionally, a typical Bocelli tour will feature two or three shows a week over a three week period - often on different continents. Instead of touring a production lighting system, lighting equipment is normally hired

UK - On 19 July the Olympic torch arrived at Leeds Castle, ready to start the next morning in Maidstone. A concert and film show was staged in Mote Park, Maidstone, attended by thousands of local people who were eager to take part in the celebrations.

SRD Group of Tonbridge, Kent used six of MilTec's LEDHead 324W moving head washes for main stage. Stuart Roberts, MD of SRD Group commented, "We chose the MTM-324W to replace our ageing discharge lamp moving head wash lights and are delighted with the purchase. They are lighter and probably brighter than the units they are replacing, and yet consume a fraction of the electricity, which saves on cabling as well. The built in programs work well and are useful when time is short to get a good looking show up and running.

"We used them for the first time on our 12m trailer stage at the Maidstone Torch Relay celebrations in

UK - France TV Sport, a division of France Television, has rented 48 ETC Source Four LED Lustr+ Zoom 25-50° luminaires from Dushow, fitting out a temporary TV studio on the north bank of the River Thames for the duration of the London Olympic Games.

Florian Allain, Dushow's technical director, explains, "We needed to use LED as we wanted to keep an eye on our power usage - we only have a limited amount available, and we wanted to get the most out of it. So with that in mind, we did a shoot out with a number of fixtures, concluding that ETC's Source Four LED, which was demonstrated to us by ETC distributor Avab Transtechnik France, was the most suitable for us.

"The presenters sit in front of a window with Tower Bridge in the background, which could have been our biggest challenge - we need enough lighting to avoid them being silhouetted, even with the bright ligh

This system replacies the work of over 400 regular moving heads. "Due to the extraordinary output (350,000 lumens) of our Syncrolite SXL fixtures, the efficiency and powerful looks are unparalleled. We believe the combination of our Syncrolite and ArenaColor is the future of major stadium permanent installations," says the company.
