Paul Silsby, CTO and co-founder of Proteus Displays, has been developing this technology for more than three years. "We've conceived our system as an artistic cladding system, or a media façade to use the current term, which will be of interest to both architects and designers," he says. "A Proteus Display is robust and straightforward to retro-fit, and once fitted, the display then becomes a blank canvas for showing dynamic text and graphics. Better still, of course, a Proteus system can be designed in from the concept stage."
As Proteus is based on reflective LCD technology, rather than emissive LED or projection systems, the Proteus package has some key advantages. "For a start," Silsby continues, "our screen images don't washout in bright light, we have actually measured the brightness of one of our systems at 40,000 nits, which is around four times what other systems offer, so the stronger light, the better the image.
"The next advantage of the Proteus technology is that for the first time projected images and large area displays can work together within a design. The combination of the latest "digital lights" and a Proteus display provides some truly unique effects. With Proteus, pointing the lights directly at the display is now a positive thing to do."
