UK - In the seven years since the split of post-hardcore band Million Dead, the band's lead vocalist Frank Turner has built a large following for his brand of folk/punk. April saw him reach a career high with a sold-out show at London's Wembley Arena, where Sennheiser equipment was much in evidence.

With 12,500 fans barely seeming to notice that Turner and his backing band, The Sleeping Souls, weren't in one of their more usual theatre-sized venues, the one-off show required a large Sennheiser presence.

Regular sound and lighting supplier Nitelites provided most of the audio system at the show, just asking Adlib Audio to supply an L-Acoustics V-DOSC system. Nitelites supplied a large amount of Sennheiser equipment, including e 840 vocal microphones and e 901, 902, 904s, 905 and MK4s on the drum kit.

"I like the robustness of the 840s," says FOH engineer and tour ma

Egypt - At its grand opening in February, Club 35 Alexandria wowed its clientele with the sonic clarity and power provided by a Meyer Sound UltraSeries loudspeaker system. The night was a packed, memorable experience featuring a set from DJ Jean, who was flown in from Beirut for the occasion.

"I give a lot of attention to detail, and I wanted to create the trendiest nightspot in Alexandria," says Club 35 Manager David Boulouys. "That meant that all the elements had to be top-notch, and that is why I chose Meyer Sound."

Located at the five-star Maritim Jolie Ville Hotel in Alexandria, Egypt, Club 35 is the first franchise to branch out from Cairo's 35 Restaurant & Lounge Bar (aka Club 35 Cairo).

USA - Over his 20 years of mixing the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Rat of Rat Sound has had to deal with a wide range of audio issues. During the current multi-year tour in support of the album I'm with You, the band encountered severe interference issues with its IEM system, which Rat addressed with a switch to the Shure PSM 1000 system and its diversity reception design.

"The troubles we were having with our existing in-ear systems were primarily due to the LED stage we have on this tour," explains Rat. "We experienced a whole new level of interference issues. When you have the artists actually standing on an LED surface, it means the beltpack is only three feet away from the RF noise, while the transmitting antenna is maybe 30 feet away. The result was a lot of dropouts from a system that had previously been very stable. We couldn't even do frequency scan

UK - An Audient ASP8024 has been the mixing console of choice in the recording studio at Nottinghamshire County Council The Old Library Arts' Centre for over six years, which last year alone saw over 2000 young people pass through its doors.

"There are also the commercial bookings on top of that," explains technical manager Jonathon Spittlehouse, who originally specified the 36-channel desk back in 2006 when the studio moved to its present location and was brought fully under local authority control. As part of the broader Arts' Centre, Spittlehouse and his colleagues are tasked with engaging 13 - 19 year olds in projects of a variety of disciplines, which can mean the studio - and therefore the desk - is really put through its paces.

"The desk is bullet proof. We've been running it full on for six years and never had a problem. We've worn the decal on the talkb

USA - On the last day of his April visit to California, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama spoke about 'Peace of Mind in Troubled Times' to an audience of more than 10,000 at the Long Beach Arena. To maintain precise intelligibility in the challenging arena acoustics, PRG Audio of Sun Valley, Calif. deployed a Meyer Sound system comprised largely of MICA and M2D line array loudspeakers.

Providing intelligibility in the arena environment was a key requirement for Bill Daly of PRG Audio's design and engineering team. Working in consultation with Meyer Sound Tech Support, Daly plotted a mono system with front-hangs of 11 M2D line array loudspeakers each and 10 M2D loudspeakers at center. Filling the vast rear portion of the oval arena were three delay hangs of eight MICA line array loudspeakers each, augmented by two CQ-2 loudspeakers for spot coverage.

UK - Orbital Sound has embarked on an apprenticeship scheme, reflecting its passion for training and encouraging new talent into the industry. Orbital has taken on two apprentices, working with the National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural, which comprises a membership network of over 230 theatre and live music employers, as well as 20 colleges across England. Becky Felton is the first to start - joining Orbital in May - with Jay Dodds already scheduled to start work when he finishes his exams in June.

The Skills Academy is all about nurturing talent and building a skilled technical workforce for the future. Orbital's initiative is being managed by Adam Thorneycroft, head of engineering, who explains why the scheme has strong appeal:

"Given the current climate, we wanted to take some positive steps to keep people interested in working in the entertainment industry.

Australia - Elite Sound and Lighting, one of Canberra and the ACT's premier audiovisual production and installation suppliers, has a wide variety of clients from dry-hire to rock'n'roll to corporate and conferencing. Consequently whenever they purchase new equipment the key element is versatility.

"We always spend a lot of time researching products which is exactly what we did when we recently decided to invest in some compact digital audio consoles," commented Darren Russell, Elite's managing director. "We looked at what all the manufacturers in the market had to offer but in terms of versatility and features, we felt that Soundcraft consoles had the edge over the competition."

For Russell, one of the main selling points with the Soundcraft consoles is their ability to either take analogue inputs and outputs on the back of the console or use Cat 5 digital

South Africa - A new d&b Audiotechnik system was installed into the Sun City Superbowl in 2010, and this year it was given legs during the 18th South African Music Awards to the praise and admiration of various important figures in South Africa's ever-burgeoning music scene. Various South African Music celebrities present at the recent ceremony were blown away by the d&b Audiotechnik J-Series and Q-Series installed in the venue.

SAMA CEO and Idols judge Randall Abrahams enthused that the "sound quality was outstanding" and was quick to note that the "sound management of the various performances was handled extremely professionally which led to a final product that was of a very high standard."

It was a large scale event that was watched live and broadcast to millions of South African's around the country. Randall reminded us that the "sound qual

Japan - Okinawa, the most southerly isle of the Japanese archipelago, is home to the Ryukyu Golden Kings (RGK) one of the leading basketball teams on the island and a member of the of Basketball Japan. While they might not yet be the LA Lakers, their aspirations are high. In a Western Conference effort to increase income that has already born fruit, the team sought to expand its audience by upping the excitement level at matches with the application of some 21st century sporting show business.

"What is different about the RGK is that they don't have a home arena, all 26 matches in their season are played on tour," explained Osamu Koki from Staging Okinawa. "They came to see us for ideas on how to liven up the excitement at each game; they wanted lighting and sound but with one critical proviso: everything had to fit in a two ton truck."

Now, with TAP gaining weight within the industry, the second phase of the scheme is ready to start. Industry trainers will

At The Cinema - The farewell concert by Irish pop band Westlife is to be screened live to cinemas in the UK and Ireland and across Europe. The group, who announced last October they were splitting after 14 years, are set to bow out with a final concert at Dublin's Croke Park on 23 June. The event will be screened at more than 200 cinemas in nine countries including Belgium, Denmark, Estonia and Norway. There are also plans to screen the gig in Australia and South Africa. The band, whose 14 UK number ones include 1999 hit Flying Without Wings, have sold more than 44 million records worldwide. Organisers said tickets for the 23 June concert sold out in minutes, leading them to schedule another date at the Dublin venue on 22 June.

Spain - D.A.S. professional sound systems took centre stage during the recent remodelling of the Buesa Arena pavilion in the Basque city of Vitoria. The multi-use venue currently seats over 15,000 spectators and is home to Vitoria's basketball team Baskonia, which has taken Europe by storm after making it to either the Euroleague's semi or quarter finals for seven years running.

The audio visual equipment - which includes an impressive new scoreboard and a super-charged professional D.A.S. sound system - played a particularly important role in this large-scale remodel. The installation was carried out by Grupo Ingevision (Ekintza) in collaboration with the D.A.S. Sound Projects Department, led by Eva Argandoña. Víctor Catalá from the D.A.S. Audio Engineering Department was on hand for system adjustments and set up, and the project was coordinated by the northern zone manager,

USA - With eight stages of electronic music scattered around downtown Miami Florida and an estimated record attendance of 165,000 over a weekend, the Ultra Music Festival (UMF) is North America's second largest electronic music event. Since 2008, Miami's Beachsound & Lighting have facilitated the performance and production duties for the main live stage.

This year for the first time, Beachsound slotted a DiGiCo SD8 into FOH duties to handle a majority of the headliners over the 3-days-over 100 DJs from David Guetta to Tiesto - with FOH engineer/crew chief Neil Rosenstock at the helm aided by systems engineer Harry Brill.

"All the DJ's and vocals went through the SD8," offered Beachsound president, Andre Serafini, "and the sound quality was superb. There were over 30 sets performed over the three-day span from artists including Tiesto, Skrillex, Benny Benassi, Av

Australia - The University of Wollongong has installed Tannoy's award-winning digital beam steering array system QFlex in its flagship lecture theatre.

The university called upon audio expert David Allara, the national audio visual manager at CARDNO ITC Consultants, to help find a solution to a long standing intelligibility problem. Allara brought in local Tannoy Professional distributor Audio Products Group to provide preliminary modelling of the theatre using Tannoy's Beam Engine software. When the University were shown what could be achieved with just a pair of loudspeakers they were keen for a demonstration.

"As well as intelligibility, the university was also keen for any new solution to be unobtrusive and aesthetically pleasing at the same time," said Allara. "QFlex was selected due to its ability to provide even audio coverage from a single pair of speake

China - Before the PALM Exhibition taking place in Beijing, China, Adamson's newly appointed exclusive distributor Real Music Acoustic & Lighting Technology Co. Ltd. organized Adamson's biggest Chinese seminar to date. The afternoon saw the ballroom of the Kempinski Hotel Beijing crowded with over 200 attendees eager to be "reacquainted" with the brand, as described by Real Music managing director, Ritchie Wang. Formed in only 2009, Real Music has already become a major player having established offices in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Xian City.

The scene in the ballroom was impressive. A 30ft wide stage was lit-up and practically the entire Adamson line-up was on display with a backdrop made-up of an enormous video wall spanning the stage highlighting the details and benefits of each product. UK - On 22 and 23 May, Robert Bosch's ProSound Team UK invited their sales partners from the United Kingdom to Birmingham for its third Big Day Out. The team led by Robert Hesse, vice president sales communication EMEA and managing director of EVI Audio GmbH welcomed guests from all over the UK. The event was staged in the football stadium of premier league Aston Villa, a club with one of the richest traditions in British football. Visitors included MI dealers, rental company employees, installation contractors and representatives of the media.

This was a get-together with a difference, the programme including the presentation of the new UK sales team and contact partners at EVI Audio in Straubing, Germany, numerous product and sound demos featuring the latest offerings from the brands Dynacord and Electro-Voice, and a workshop with IRIS-Net as its theme. UK - The Roland M-480 48 Channel Live Digital Mixing Console and S-1608 Digital Snakes have been touring the UK and Ireland with alternative metal band InMe in a full on schedule which has seen the band performing 35 dates in as many days at different venues during February and March.

FOH engineer for the tour, Simon Baxter, chose the M-480 and S-1608's for the tour as they provide a powerful and feature packed system with a small footprint which could be moved easily from venue to venue. The tour was supported by live sound touring company Concert Sound Clair, who provided all of the necessary mic's, choosing a selection of Shure, Sennheiser, AKG, Audix and Beyer for the job. Concert Sound Clair also supplied the stagepatch, using VEAM cable and stage boxes.

The set up for InMe was straightforward, with two guitars, bass and three vocals and after seeing the M-480 demonstrate

USA - There's a grandMA2 in the house for Wicked, the Broadway musical about the untold story of the Witches of Oz. The long-running show at the Gershwin Theatre recently switched to a grandMA2 full-size console for lighting and special effects control.

"It was time to replace our previous system due to its age, and it made sense to update to a grandMA2," says Brendan Quigley, show electrician. "All of the Wicked shows worldwide are on the grandMA platform, so it was our turn to move up. The grandMA2 is proving to be both agile and rock solid."

Quigley notes that reliability is critical for a production that does eight shows a week and more than 400 performances a year, not counting rehearsals. "The previous control platforms were approaching 20 years old, so it was time to ensure that we had a stable system moving forward. We need

India - Within days of the launch of DiGiCo's SD10 console in 2010, Indian rental company Sound.com had invested in one, its first DiGiCo console. Two years on, the desk is a regular fixture on events serviced by the company, the latest an orchestral tour celebrating the work of composer AR Rahman.

Purchased via DiGiCo's Indian distributor Rivera International, the SD10 was "the ideal product to give Sound.com the edge in the competitive Indian market".

"I always wanted to be a part of the DiGiCo family, but we wanted to invest in a product which is right at the beginning of its life and that would make us stand out as a genuinely different service provider in the Indian market," says the company's founder and managing director Warren D'Souza. "The technical requirements of events are getting ever-more complex, so the SD10 was ideally positioned for us

Japan - The idea of providing even audio coverage for Tokyo Dome's massive 55,000 seats - without the need for delays - has always been the holy grail of incoming production teams.

Finally this dream became a reality - when the Martin Audio MLA Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array made its debut there recently, supporting one of Asia's most successful acts, TVXQ (an abbreviation of their Chinese name, Tong Vfang Xien Qi).

Major rental company, MSI Japan had chosen this venue for the début of its new MLA system - supporting the Korean electronica pop star sensations (now a duo featuring U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin). As a result, they put one of their senior FOH engineers, Takashi 'Shiro' Murata, in charge of the mix.

Traditionally, with all large concerts at the Tokyo Dome, delay towers have needed to be set to provide even coverage throughout the venue. These have been

Australia - After Aussie rock legend Cold Chisel's rapturously received best-of arena shows of last year, they played a few intimate shows at venues such as the Festival Hall in Melbourne where sound engineer Greg Rosman utilised the in-house JBL VerTec PA system.

Not exactly big news except Rosman had a powerful new weapon in his arsenal - JBL V5 VerTec presets courtesy of the new Crown VRACK, a complete amplifier management rack system solution. The VRACK features three built-in Crown I-Tech 12000HD amplifiers, immediately providing an easy-to-configure, plug-and-play solution that eliminates the need to build amplifier racks.

"The VRACKS have made a big difference to the sound of the VerTec," commented Greg Rosman. "They allow us access to the new JBL VerTec V5 presets and with V5 it's like having a new VerTec system all over again.

"The VerTec V5 DSP
