Olympic Countdown - The Musicians' Union has accused Olympic organisers LOCOG of breaking the terms of their agreement on performers' pay. The union claims that it has received reports from several musicians who have been asked to play at Olympic gigs for no fee and that it has forwarded these onto LOCOG.

Horace Trubridge, assistant general secretary of the MU, told The Stage, "We have been sending [LOCOG] examples all year of professional musicians who are being approached by LOCOG representatives to work for free . There seems to be a trawling exercise going on where LOCOG representatives are looking at band websites, listening to the music, thinking, 'I quite like that' and sending them an email to see if they will work for free. That seems to be what's happening, which is a complete breach of the agreement that we have with LOCOG."

UK - L-Acoustics UK Certified Provider SSE Audio Group has supplied a Kara WST line source system to staging and production hire company Pro Productions.

Pro Productions has an inventory of outdoor stages and riser decks, with some PA and lighting equipment. This year, company founder Will Bushell decided the time was right to invest in some prime audio brands, enabling the company to provide a complete high spec package. Based close by, SSE has a long relationship of dry hiring to Pro Productions, so it was logical for Bushell to visit an SSE Roadshow for a demo.

"We wanted to invest in rider friendly, road proven brands," says Bushell. "L-Acoustics Kara puts Pro Productions on the map as a pro audio provider as well as a staging company.

"Investing now we should get maximum life expectancy - if dV-DOSC is anything to go by, then we can be confident that

USA - The Renkus-Heinz booth and demo room were buzzing with activity throughout the three days of InfoComm 2012, with visitors and customers checking out the company's new products.

One of the biggest hits at the show was the introduction of the Ralph Heinz Signature Series loudspeaker line. The RH Signature Series, which includes both self-powered and passive models with a dual wedge angle design and multiple rigging and mounting options, was recognised with ProSound Network's Best Of Show award.

Also making a splash was the new Varia series, an innovative modular design that can be configured as a vertical line array, point source horizontal array, or ground stacked. Varia's flexible design makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of permanent or touring applications, says the company.

In addition to a busy booth and fully-packed demo room, Renkus-Heinz carrie

UK - Popular West London live music venue, Bush Hall, has recently invested in a Midas PRO2 console.

Charlie Raworth, managing director and proprietor of Bush Hall, made the decision to 'go digital' following the venue's chief engineer, George Hider's, visit to the PLASA Show last year.

"George went along to PLASA 2011 where he was able to compare the new Midas PRO2 with other desks and the Midas was by far and away the winner,", comments Raworth. The PRO2 is part of a fixed installation for gigs and events at Bush Hall.

Raworth continues, "Now that we have gone digital, the improvement in performance has been significant. The PRO2 has been very successful. All of our house engineers are loving it, getting very techy and geeky with it, and promoters and tour managers have been similarly impressed."

Following Hider's initial interest in the console, JP C

UEP's Steve Butcher, who also production managed the event, comments, "We were recommended to the client by a contact. The party was attended by around 250 invited guests.

UK - More than one million people lined the River Thames in London on Sunday, 3 June to catch a glimpse of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as she celebrated her Diamond Jubilee with a River Pageant involving 1000 boats. And in typical British style the weather was dreadful, with heavy rain doing its best to spoil what was supposed to be the highlight of the UK's Diamond Jubilee weekend.

But the cold, the wind and the rain proved no match for the DPA microphones that were the unsung heroes of the event. Even in atrocious conditions they worked perfectly and all of the microphones used to record the orchestras and choirs delivered a seamless performance.

DPA 4088 directional headset microphones were used to mike the Royal College of Music Chamber Choir who performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on Symphony, the last of 10 Herald music barges taking part in the pageant.

Japan - The recent Big Beach Dance Festival at the Makuhari Seaside Park in Chiba, again saw crowds of around 20,000 people assemble to see an all star line up, including The Chemical Brothers (playing a DJ set), John Digweed, Beardyman, Timo Maas and many more.

Promoted by alife Entertainment, adding to the atmosphere of the legendary beach party was a full RCF rig on each of the three stages. RCF's sales manager for the region, Lars Yoshiyama, reported that the event was a major success.

Contracted to provide the sound was rental company, Comestock, and such was the scale of the PA requirement that they needed to buy a complete new system. After careful consideration they opted for RCF, and placed an order with territorial distributor Ballad Co.

Managed by Norihiro Matsuyama, Comestock chose the TT+ system because of its clarity and its exceptional power handling. The comp

France - Parisian company Silence, a leading supplier of AV equipment and services to the TV and live events market in France has chosen to invest in a significant Uniline modular line array system from French manufacturers APG. The news comes shortly after the announcement that the UK's Plus 4 Audio, also TV studio sound specialists, has just taken delivery of their Uniline system.

Silence's CEO, Gilles Hugo, takes up the story. "It's true that until now, we have limited our stock of PA equipment so that we are under no pressure to supply one brand over another. We supply what is best for the job or event concerned. However, having used the Uniline system to great effect on The Voice we started to re-evaluate.

" The Voicewas about as complex as TV shows get these days, and with the added pressure that it absolutely had to sound good in the studio, as

UK - Orbital Sound has recently installed a d&b audiotechnik White range system at private members' club Aura in Mayfair. This represents one of the first club installations for the new range, involving a combination of D12 and D6 amplifiers with Q-Sub, 10S-D, 8S and 5S loudspeakers - together with a Ci80 DJ monitor.

Aura has a maximum capacity of 210 in its main room and the emphasis is very much on maintaining an intimate atmosphere - in everything except in respect to its sound. Co-owner Alberto Barbieri explains what they were looking to achieve: "We wanted a system that could deliver a big sound without being in any way obvious, delivering a high SPL with an even sound and clarity. The objective is to surprise our clients by the quality and depth of the sound, despite the size of our venue. I have always been impressed with the d&b audiotechnik brand, having used a var

UK - BlackBox Recorder manufacturer JoeCo has commenced shipments of its new 64-channel Dante recorder. The BBR64-DANTE, previewed at Prolight + Sound 2012, was developed as a result of continuing collaboration between JoeCo and Audinate, creators of the award-winning Dante digital media networking solution. Still only occupying 1U of rack space, despite doubling its track count from 32 to 64, the BBR64-DANTE now ranks alongside its 64-channel MADI sibling as one of the smallest large-scale audio capturing devices currently available.

The recorder connects to any Dante-enabled network device from a range of console and converter manufacturers. In addition to recording 64 channels at standard sample rates, it can also record eight channels of analogue alongside 56 channels of Dante for capturing audience and ambience. Higher sample rate recording (88.2kHz and 96kHz) is also possi

Lebanon - When Lebanon's Casino du Liban celebrated its grand re-reopening back in 1996, the opulent gaming resort entertained visiting jet-setters in two completely remodeled venues-both featuring Meyer Sound technology. Between 2009 and earlier this year, another technical upgrade project equipped the 1,200-capacity Théâtre du Liban with Meyer Sound MICA line array loudspeakers and furnished the cabaret-style 600-seat Salle des Ambassadeurs with new M'elodie line array loudspeakers.

"After hundreds of successful shows, I had no thoughts of replacing the old systems with anything other than Meyer," says Tony Khoury, who has been head audio engineer at Casino du Liban since 1996. "I wanted newer technology but with the same natural sound quality and amazing reliability. In 16 years, I had zero loudspeaker failures. That made me a Meyer Sound believer."

Norway - The Norwegian Television School has replaced its existing stock of miniature microphones with 20 DPA 4060 omnidirectional miniature microphones, which were chosen for their ruggedness and reliability.

Supplied by DPA's Norwegian distributor Lyd-Systemer AS, the new microphones are being used with Senheisser wireless systems, including eight channels of stationary wireless receivers for multi camera applications. Originally designed for use with wireless systems in theatre, television and close-miked instrument applications, DPA's 4060 miniature microphones are exceedingly accurate and highly unobtrusive.

Erik Sutterud, technical supervisor at the Television School, says, "Every time we purchase new equipment we research the market to look for the best products. A manufacturer that specialized in one type of product is likely to put more effort into its equipment

USA - Champagne Sunday Brunch in the Eden Courtyard at the Best Western Eden Resort & Suites in Lancaster, PA has become a local area tradition, attracting patrons with an ever-changing menu that draws from the region's finest seasonal ingredients. But while the Courtyard is known for its dining and social events, the room's acoustics have long made it a challenge to attract speaking engagements. With its 40ft high glass ceiling, hard stone floor and hard walls, the room's reverberation made intelligibility nearly non-existent.

"This is a gorgeous space and great for social events - cocktail receptions and so forth," says Stephen Sikking, managing partner, Eden Resort & Suites. "But when a speaker wanted to present something to the entire room, it was very problematic to articulate so that people could hear intelligibly."

USA - The New Line Cinema film adaptation of the Rock of Ages Broadway musical opened 15 June with a star-studded cast, hits from the 1980s, and High End Systems products in the mix. The rock and roll romance of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, meeting on the Sunset Strip in search of their Hollywood dreams, is told through the music of Journey, Foreigner, Def Leppard, REO Speedwagon and more, much of which is recreated in performances in the film.

LD Mike Baldassari who has designed the theatrical lighting and concert scenes for a number of films including Nine, Joyful Noise, Sex and the City 2 and more, was tasked with handling the live stage performances in this production. In his rig full of assorted lighting, he chose to include four High End Systems Showbeam2.5 automated luminaires. However, to run all the performances, he specified th

USA - - The Boston Symphony Orchestra has once again tapped DPA Microphones for its nationally broadcast, live Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular. Held annually in the Hatch Shell at the Esplanade along the Charles River, the concert and fireworks show hosts nearly 400,000 attendees. As the most watched Independence Day performance in the US each year, the Pops have continued to rely on DPA Microphones to ensure that audio at the Spectacular is as magnificent as the rockets' red glare.

With limited rehearsal time and over one hundred production inputs, the Pops needed gear that sounded good from the start and worked dependably. DPA Microphones fit the bill for miking the orchestra, and the audio crew made good use of several of the company's equipment options during the event.

DPA could be found across the stage throughout the evening's performance, with t

UK - Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre in Armagh, Northern Ireland, has become one of the first venues in the world to install Allen & Heath's new GLD digital mixer, comprising a GLD-80 mixer plus an AR84 I/O rack in the control room, and an AR2412 rack down on the stage floor.

Replacing an existing analogue desk, the installation is part of a wider overhaul of the venue's analogue audio infrastructure, which includes installing Cat5 around the building to allow connection of an expander I/O rack to the GLD-80 mixer.

"We have a team of four technicians, and we all put forward names of desks we thought may be suitable, as well as consulting industry colleagues. We demoed a few desks before making our choice but the GLD came out on top for price, ease of use and input capacity. Moreover, it sounded the best in our comparison listening tests," commented technician, Gar

Denmark - Parken Stadium is Denmark's national football stadium and the current home of FC Copenhagen. Built between 1990-1992 it currently has a capacity of 38,065 (for football matches) although for other events the stadium can hold as many as 50,000 people with an end-stage set-up and 55,000 with a centre-stage set-up.

In 2006-07 the club qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its history, and three years later became the first Danish club to ever reach the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Keeping pace with the club's recent success, the Parken Stadium is equipped with a modern infrastructure, with a recently upgraded audio system. Danish company Nordic Sales (part of the Matrix Group) delivered and installed a premium RCF loudspeaker system, working in close collaboration with the RCF project department, who specified the individual products,

Music in Schools - Violinist Nicola Benedetti has attacked the spending squeeze on music tuition in schools. She said young people needed a cultural identity to replace their obsession with celebrities and in becoming a celebrity. Benedetti began violin lessons at the age of five and went on to attend the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey. The 25-year-old told the Radio Times, "I'm fiercely furious about the provision of music in schools."

Benedetti secured a £2m, six-album record contract after winning BBC Young Musician of the Year at 16 and has risen to international fame. She has also been involved in supporting the Big Noise orchestra in Raploch, Stirling - inspired by the Venezuelan El Sistema scheme to help poorer children. The violinist said: "So many people up and down the country are trying to create a better foundation for musical education.
