Japan - Internationally renowned recording engineer and lecturer Akira Fukada made an enormous impact at the New York AES Convention in 1997 when he unveiled the Fukada Tree seven microphone arrangement - a totally new technique for recording orchestral music in surround sound for subsequent broadcast or CD release.

Developed to resolve some of the problems engineers had encountered when trying to record spatial environments with traditional omni-directional microphones, the Fukada Tree clarified microphone positioning and also incorporated directional microphones for main and environmental sounds.

John Meyer is one of the original pioneers of the modern sound reinforcement industry. He began his career in 1967 by building a customised system for the Steve Miller Band, and from there he went on to develop loudspeaker systems for the likes of Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Grateful Dead. Since founding Meyer Sound Laboratories in 1979 with his wife Helen, Meyer has continued to research, experiment and develop sound technology ever since - building Meyer Sound into an iconic brand and a consistent world leader in the pro audio market. UK - Electrosonic has announced the promotion of Sarah Joyce to vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Joyce was previously employed as general manager human resources, EMEA. Her promotion follows Ilari Anttila's decision to leave the company to return to his home country of Finland. Joyce has also been appointed to the company's global executive board.

France - The largest annual festival in France takes place mid-July of every year, in Carhaix, Brittany. This year's festival featured some very big names in music such as Sting, Bob Dylan, Portishead, The Cure and Garbage who performed on its main Glenmore stage. Another five stages featured international and French artists from well-known to up and coming acts, including performance artists and theatre. The high profile names attracted 244,000 attendees over four days.
