USA - The Monterey Jazz Festival is one of the longest consecutively running jazz festivals and has featured some of the most riveting performances from artists such as Billie Holiday, Etta James and Louis Armstrong since its inception more than 50 years ago. Since then, the bar has been set high, so that show audiences, which have grown to more than 8,000 at the arena stage alone, now expect the legacy to live on with outstanding performances each and every year. In order to not disappoint, sound engineers work behind the scenes to address the challenges of having to deliver clear sound in an open arena setting with minimal visibility of mics. DPA Microphones' d:screet 4060 Omnidirectional offers just the solution, as its low-profile, natural sound accommodates engineers for every performance or environment.

USA - Founded in 1826 in Easton, Pennsylvania, USA, Lafayette College offers degree programmes in the liberal arts and engineering to its 2400 full-time students. As a member of the intercollegiate Patriot League, Lafayette has an active sports and recreational programme with modern facilities including Fisher Stadium, home of the Lafayette Leopards football team.

Fisher Stadium underwent a major renovation beginning in 2006 that included additional seating, synthetic turf, stadium lighting, a large press box and a 19' x 35' video display. The renovation included sound system upgrades but the upgraded system did not provide even coverage in the new seating areas and it had neighbourhood spill issues. In addition, many spectators complained that the new subwoofers seemed overpowering.

Last year, Lafayette asked Communication Systems, Inc. (CSI) of Allentown, Pennsylvania to red

The Netherlands - Award-winning comedienne Sara Kroos is a familiar face on stage and screen in the Netherlands, enjoying a high level of popularity thanks to regular television appearances and live tours. Her current tour is titled Van Jewelste and features a Yamaha CL1 digital mixing system.

The 90 minute show is a mixture of dialogue and songs, with Sara playing piano accompanied by Rutger Hoorn on drums. Having used rented mixing consoles up until now, Sara and mix engineer Jan Heideveld felt it was time to have their own system.

"Sara has 150 live shows coming up in the next 18 months, so we felt it was worthwhile to invest in a system that would tour with us," says Jan, an experienced sound designer and mixing engineer, who has worked with Sara on her last two tours.

After an 'audio shootout' of several different digital consoles, they chose the CL1 fo

UK - Liverpool, UK-based rental specialist Adlib continued a busy autumn season supplying a lighting, sound and trucking package to the UK section of chart-busting pop-rock band Lawson's recent UK tour.

The show included a tumultuous 'homecoming' show at Liverpool Echo Arena, where the band welcomed surgeon Dr. David Lawson - after whom they are named - to the stage and thanked him again in front of an ecstatic crowd, six years after his work saved the life of lead singer Andy Brown.

Adlib were chosen as technical supplier under the wing of James Sharpe, Andrew Thornton and John Pryer for 24/7 Productions Ltd. Adlib client manager Phil Kielty commented: "We were really pleased to be working with Lawson. It's been brilliant to watch the band's live career evolve over the last two years and Adlib is proud to be part of the team.

Kielty continued: "Everyone on the cre

Lebanon - While skiing may not be a sport readily associated with Lebanon, the country is in fact home to the highest mountains in the Middle East, and has been home to several fully equipped resorts since the 1960s. The recent refurbishment of Le 1700, one of the best après-ski restaurants in the resort of Faqra, has seen the installation of a QSC sound system based on K and KW Series Active Loudspeakers, courtesy of Beirut-based QSC distributor Techno Sound.

Situated at an altitude of 1700m, Le 1700 is a French restaurant that also features live music and dancing. "We were asked to provide some speakers for a live test as part of the complete refurbishment of the restaurant," explains Pierre Fahed of Techno Sound. "The PA had to be suitable for the playback of recorded lounge music suitable for quiet dining, but also for the amplification of live music for danc

USA - At the new Terminal B at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), a self-powered 48 V Meyer Sound loudspeaker system in the south concourse has raised the bar for audio fidelity and flexibility. Despite large reflective surfaces and tall ceilings, announcements and music are projected with a crispy clarity rarely heard in transportation facilities.

"The audio quality, intelligibility, and uniformity of coverage are distinctly better than most terminals across the country," says Ulf Lueders, Terminal Services group manager of the Houston Airport System (HAS). "With this upgrade, travellers can enjoy the various concessions without having to worry about missing a flight announcement. Higher quality also allows the concourse operator to choose from a wider variety of background music, without being restricted to the 'elevator music' compatible with

USA - First opened in 1928, the Capitol Theatre is the oldest and second largest venue in Madison, Wisconsin's Overture Centre for the Arts complex, which today encompasses seven performance facilities and four art galleries. Despite undergoing a major renovation project eight years ago that halved the historic vaudeville house's capacity to approximately 1,100 seats, the Capitol's sound reinforcement system hadn't been updated for nearly two decades, prompting the recent installation of a new L-Acoustics amplifier and loudspeaker package.

According to Capitol Theatre technician Brian Anderson, the new system design is comprised of 10 Kara enclosures per side, each complemented by an additional hang of six SB15m subs creating an ultra-compact and lightweight flown three-way system. The Kara arrays are covering both balcony and orchestra level seating areas thus eliminating the n

USA - Fusing traditional local music with Europop, contemporary rock and an unusual fixation with Scotland, Austrian quintet Die Lauser has a remarkably large fanbase. Playing around 120 shows a year with DiGiCo consoles, the band's recent foray to the USA proved how effective the company's new SD Convert software is.

Die Lauser mixes traditional acoustic Austrian instruments with keyboards, drums and guitar... and bagpipes. The result is the kind of clap-and-stomp-along anthems for audience participation, making the tartan-toting band a favourite at festivals throughout Austria and Germany. This year the band took its special sound to the USA, headlining each of the four nights of the annual German Fest (billed as Milwaukee's Original Haus Party). Normally, the band tours with DiGiCo SD8 mixers. However, the popularity of the console meant an SD8 wasn't available, but the abili

USA - When the first-ever Life Is Beautiful music, art and food festival, took over 15 square blocks of downtown Las Vegas on 26-27 October, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS) was on location providing frequency coordination for the more than 80 musical acts, performers and media outlets throughout the two-day celebration.

In its inaugural year, the Life is Beautiful festival featured a diverse line-up of musical acts from a variety of genres including The Killers, Kings of Leon, Beck, Vampire Weekend, Imagine Dragons, Janelle Monae, Passion Pit, Jurassic 5, Danny Brown, Childish Gambino Pretty Lights, STS9 and Empire of the Sun, to name a few.

"PWS was happy to be part of this new festival, and while we have extensive experience in providing frequency coordination for events of this size and scope, it was not without its challenges," says Jim Van Winkle, general ma

Today, the company focuses on the professional and business markets with a particular focus on delivering solutions for conferences as well

The Netherlands - Orbital Sound, the specialist supplier to the broadcast, theatre, event and entertainment markets, reports that it has supplied the sound system for the Dutch production of the hit musical Jersey Boys, featuring the music and story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and with sound design by Steve Canyon Kennedy. The system deploys the Meyer Sound Mica compact high-powered curvilinear array speaker, supported by d&b audiotechnik E0 compact speakers.

This is the first foreign language production of the show, which obviously presents the sound team with its own set of unique challenges over and above the conventional issues of the venue. Associate sound designer Andrew Keister provided an insight into this production, which opened recently at the Beatrix Theatre in Utrecht:

"Jersey Boys today is in a place that we couldn't have dreamed of

Italy - Regulating their electro acoustic parameters in the fastest possible way, when necessary in an extreme and even enjoyable manner, has become an indispensable requirement.

The question Outline staffers asked themselves before developing the solution for this issue was the following: how could the "dialogue" or interaction between system engineers and loudspeaker systems be improved?

This question led to another: how could this control be made easier, more enjoyable and more powerful than it had ever been in the past?

And also: was it possible to control a line array (completely) with just a tablet, and no other kind of aid?

These ideas were at the basis of Outline's iMode - The Intelligent Digital Loudspeaker Multi-Control Platform -- and the company has now decided to dedicate a Web site to ensuring the technology involved is fully understood.

Australia - When Canberra-based audio visual company One Vision decided it was time to replace their Yamaha digital mixers there was only one alternative for them - the Soundcraft Si Compact. Soundcraft's compact console is designed to offer digital power and versatility combined with an operator-friendly 'analogue feel'.

"We wanted a console that would be more hands on than the Yamaha consoles as far as the crossover between digital and analogue," commented Frank Meany, managing director of One Vision. "Basically we wanted a console with knobs on it as opposed to a console with buttons and scrolling pages of menus, it's more intuitive.

Frank and his team have found their Soundcraft Si Compact consoles to be very powerful and they are particularly impressed by the console's sound, with Frank remarking that it sounds more like an analogue console than other digit

USA - In today's world of sound reinforcement systems, a PA might be anything from a collection of disparate parts to an integrated whole in which each component is designed to interact seamlessly with all others. While the latter has obvious benefits in terms of performance and flexibility, it's an approach that can be surprisingly challenging to find in the PA systems offered by leading vendors.

That's what Chris Chavanu of Electronic Contracting Company (ECCO) in Lincoln, Nebraska discovered when he set out to find the best match for the sound system requirements of Lincoln's new 15,147-seat Pinnacle Bank Arena, the new home of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers men's and women's basketball teams.

Based on specifications developed under the direction of Kevin Day at Dallas AV consultancy Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, the arena's request for proposals (RFP) favo

USA - RedNet, Focusrite's flagship range of Ethernet-networked audio interfaces, based around the Dante Ethernet protocol, can take music and recording to places it might never have gone.

That's what's taking place at Georgia Southern University, where the school's music technology department is moving forward with an innovative curriculum. The programme utilises eight RedNet 1 devices, which offer eight channels of line-level analogue I/O with Focusrite's precision 24-bit A-D and D-A conversion, to connect acoustical and electronic performances from the school's electronic ensemble. This allows students to manipulate the audio in real time, creating entirely new compositions in the process.

For instance, as John Thompson, the school's associate professor, music technology, explains, a performance by a clarinet in one of any number of venues across the campus, including a perf

UK - A strong sense of community is centred on the Hertford Theatre, where a new Yamaha CL3-based audio system has transformed the house sound.

In common with many provincial venues, the Hertford Theatre is council-run and stages a wide variety of events - focusing on drama, comedy, lectures, community events and films. The production centrepiece of the year is the annual pantomime, which runs throughout December and early January, often with two shows a day.

"By the end of last year everything on the sound side was life expired, it had reached a crucial point where we had no choice but to do something," says the theatre's technical manager Alex Antonis. "The pantomime, in particular, places great demands on the audio facilities, but even the amateur companies and semi-pro youth theatres that use the venue were needing more channels.
