UK - Established in 1991 as an innovative state funded City Technology College, Brooke Weston Academy in Corby has a high reputation for academic achievement.

Built on land donated by local land-owner Hugh de Capell Brooke, and supported by Garry Weston, owner of Associated British Foods, in 2008 the school became an Academy. Although 22 years is relatively short in the life of a building, it is light years in the evolution of sound technology.

School principal, Trish Stringer, recently ordered that the sound system in their flagship 540-seat purpose-built Weston Theatre be upgraded to improve coverage.

AV & theatre technician Peter Jackson, who has been at the school since 1993, certainly had no objection, and became part of the tender process which resulted in Leicester-based Upstage Theatre Supplies being awarded the contract.

Sweden - Following the highly successful installation of an AFC3 acoustic enhancement system at the Stockholm Royal Opera rehearsal complex, further Yamaha digital audio technology has recently been specified for the venue itself. An MTX5-D digital matrix now helps to ensure that communication between lighting and video technicians is fast and crystal clear.

The installation is part of a major upgrade to the venue's lighting and video infrastructure, which has included a new control room and consoles. The Yamaha MTX5-D functions as a flexible 'front end' to a Riedel MediorNet system, which provides communications throughout the building. Installed by Norrkoping-based Mycon AV, the company's Åke 'Myggan' Wennersten explains why the MTX5-D was his preferred solution.

"To satisfy the requirements of the lighting and video team, a high quality, cost-effective matrix mixer wa

Slovakia - Back in 2008 several Slovak cities competed to become the European Capital of Culture for 2013, and took part in a competition. Eventually the city of Kosice (from the east of Slovakia) was awarded the title.

The company Rock Centrum, Martin Audio's territorial distributor, won the tender to supply the main sound system at the headquarters of the organisation, the Support Centre of Culture and Creativity (CPKK). Situated in the Kulturpark (a revitalisation of old military barracks), it has been built at the cost of €23.8m.

The mainstay of the complete public address consists of 20 x W8LM (in two hangs of 10 elements per side), with two W8LMD down-fills at the base of each hang. Providing LF extension are 10 x WS218X subwoofers.

In addition, 14 x Martin Audio Blackline F12+ and six F15+ have been used for floor monitors and sidefills respectively. The system is dr

USA - Founded in 1966, Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre (ASGT) is an outdoor community theatre in downtown Annapolis, Maryland, USA. With its all-volunteer staff and actors, ASGT hosts three major productions each season in an outdoor garden setting. While most ASGT productions are musicals, the venue also hosts Shakespeare, improv and educational programmes.

The outdoor garden setting is pleasant for theatre goers, but it presents ongoing challenges to actors and staff ranging from lingering afternoon heat and inclement weather to noise from boat engines and horns at the nearby City Dock. Scott McCormick, one of two technical directors at ASGT, says the theatre's previous loudspeakers weren't weather-resistant and had to be bagged or removed from the theatre when it rained and after each performance. In addition, they had poor directional control which contributed to on-stage fe

Korea - Allen & Heath's Korean distributor, Sama ProSound Co., Ltd, recently installed a GLD-80 digital mixing system and ME-1 personal monitor mixer in Gunpo Sungjang Church in Gunpo-si near Seoul.

The church recently expanded, and decided to upgrade the sound system to digital from an old analogue system. Founded in 1984, the church contains a 1200 capacity main worship area with two floors and there is a sub-worship area and cafeteria.

Sama ProSound's brief was to install an easy to use and convenient digital mixer, so the company selected a GLD-80 digital mixer expanded with a AR2412 and two AR84 I/O racks, and with personal monitoring provided by five of the compatible ME-1 mixers, making Gunpo Sungjang Church the first church to install ME-1 in Korea.

"I first saw ME-1 at KOBA 2013, and it really impressed me. ME-1 meets all of my expectations as it is very easy t

Sound rental provider Melpomen brought Nexo's new STM Series line array systems into the national stadium for the first time, tying into the permanently-installed Nexo Geo S12 PA for extra coverage of the uppermost seating areas.

Urban Peace 3, which comes five years after Urban Peace 2, presented the cream of French rap music on the city's largest and most prestigious stage. The line-up included Stromae, Orelsan, Chris Brown, Youssoupha and La Fouine, and the mix tent hosted some of the best sound engineers in France.

Sound design for the event was done by Thierry Tranchant of Melpomen, with measurement and tuning by Vladimir Coulibre, using 78 'se

The Netherlands - Hoevenaars LGV BV, a top live event production company located in the Netherlands, recently added Adamson Systems Energia E15 enclosures to their production inventory.

The new line arrays were immediately put into service for the We Love The 90's concert held in Goffertpark Nijmegen in the Netherlands. More than 23,000 people were in attendance for the eight-hour celebration of the music of that decade.

The audience was treated to live performances by many popular artists from the 90's including Scooter, Paul Elstak, Captain Jack, Flamman & Abraxas, 2 Brothers o

"The intention is to integrate Waves MultiRack SoundGrid with our MegaCOMMS networking technology," says Richard Ferriday, Cadac brand development manager. In a bid to strengthen its reputation further, the venue has opened a new performance space designed by the award-winning Russell Stage Studio, to accommodate live bands, DJs and comedians. At the audio helm is a Peavey Commercial Audio HiSys loudspeaker system, supported by a wide range of additional PCA kit.

Australia - The Cube Wodonga is the city's most recent and exciting attraction. Located right in the heart of Wodonga's CBD, The Cube Wodonga is a modern performance space that can house 1000 people standing, 320 people at round tables or 410 in theatre mode.

The flat floor capacity and a stage that can be flipped to allow performances in the courtyard make it unique to north-east Victoria and southern NSW.

Professional Audio Services were called upon to supply audio requirements to this multi-purpose space including a JBL VRX PA.

"The JBL VRX was specified by the consultant although we have a VRX rig ourselves which we had used a few times in the old venue and their technical manager was very impressed by it," commented Tony Boon, managing director of PAS. "We agreed it was the best PA for the new venue especially as we had plenty more to add to it if require

Poland - Once described by tourist guides as 'the most beautiful cinema in Europe', the Capitol Theatre in the Polish city of Wroclaw has led a chequered existence. But a multi-million zloti rebuild and restoration saw the venue reopen in September with a whole new lease of life... and a comprehensive Yamaha audio system at its heart.

Originally constructed in 1929, the Expressionist building was partially destroyed during the Second World War. The damaged parts were rebuilt by Poland's post-war Communist regime in the angular architectural style of the time and, from 1955, it became one of Poland's best loved theatres. But disaster struck again in 1997, when further major damage was inflicted by flooding.

Thanks to a major EU grant, the venue has just reopened after a two year, PLN83m refurbishment, which sees pre-war, post-war and brand new architecture cleverly harmonised t

UAE - Thomsun Trading, Optocore's Dubai-based distributors, found that their creative presentation of the German manufacturer's intercom devices at InfoComm MEA paid dividends, and they received some excellent new enquiries as a result.

According to Thomsun product specialist, Alok Ghurde, the presence of two Optocore V3RFX-Intercom devices allowed them to connect a remote RTS DKP 16 CLD coloured keypanel to the ZEUS III LE+ 16-channel intercom matrix. "Due to the nature of the display, we also managed to promote and discuss BroaMan and how it could be used in an AV install/events venue," reports Alok. "We received excellent feedback and interest from system integrators as well as end-users - and this augurs well for our plans to showcase BroaMan and Optocore in a big way at the CABSAT show early next year."

In fact, Thomsun Trading has been receiving a goo

UK - Front of house engineer Giles Stocks has recently been using Allen & Heath's new GLD-112 digital desk with a variety of artists in venues and at festivals across the UK and Europe.

Among the acts powered by Stocks and the GLD-112 were Pulled Apart By Horses at Leeds First Direct Arena, Zico Chain (supporting Iron Maiden at London's O2 Arena) and Hawk Eyes, during the band's System Of A Down support slot in Europe.

The Allen & Heath GLD-112 is a larger version of the popular GLD-80 mixer, with eight additional control strips, taking the channel count to 28 fader strips in four layers. The new console provides 48 input processing channels, eight stereo FX returns, 30 configurable busses and 20 mix processing channels.

Stocks says of the new GLD-112, "It's by far the best-sounding console in its price range, it's a very dynamic board and the CPU is fantastically quick

Spain - D.A.S. Audio's new Aero Series 2 systems were one of the highlights at this year's Low Cost Festival: combined with sun, sand, and three days of live music the systems were the perfect ingredient to ensure a successful festival experience.

Celebrated five years running at Benidorm's Guillermo Amor Stadium, over 75,000 spectators flocked to the concert grounds to see a line-up of some of the world's best artists, including Two Door Cinema Club, Portishead, Glasvegas, Love of Lesbian and Lori Meyers.

Two stages were set up on the venue's grounds to handle the massive influx of performers and fans and both were configured with an army of systems from D.A.S. Aero Series 2 product range. Local company Acústica PAE was called in to supply and set up the festival's sound system, collaborating closely with D.A.S. Audio's Sound Project Department on system design and installat

UK - Britannia Row Productions is no stranger to London Fashion Week but every year is different. The show is renowned for using some of the capital's most individual settings to show off designers' collections, each with their own idiosyncratic acoustic profile or challenge for the audio supplier.

This year the prize for the most unusual conundrum must go to The Dairy in Bloomsbury where a swimming pool, complete with a synchronised swimming team, provided the centre piece for Stella McCartney's collection. As project manager, Tom Brown explains: "This was something of a one-off creative challenge: we had to provide monitoring for them underwater as well as provide audio feeds out of sight and keep our solution safe with the water."

Elsewhere around the capital, venues offered a varied array of acoustic challenges. Take the Farmiloe Building in Clerkenwell, a Victor
