USA - Fans of Mastodon weren’t surprised when three of the band’s members appeared in an episode of Game of Thrones. Like the HBO hit, the music of this group reveals itself in lavishly detailed layers of fantasy that fire the imagination and leave easy categorisations smouldering by the wayside.
The complex Mastodon experience is on full display in the quartet’s 30-city North American Emperor of Sand tour, not just in the epochal music, but also in the highly evocative light and video show that Michael Howe created and controls with the new ChamSys MagicQ MQ500 Stadium and Magic HD media server.
The Emperor of Sand album takes listeners on a cosmic odyssey through time as it follows a man sentenced to death in a majestic but cruel desert. Howe’s design evokes rich imagery that reflects this musical narrative with seven 2’ wide by 14’ tall vid

USA - Built in the 1980’s, Christ the Redeemer Parish Church is a thriving part of the community in Atco, New Jersey. From more humble beginnings, when Deacon Charles “Chick” McAleer was part of the team that helped wire the original Church, the initial sound system used just six pendant style loudspeakers distributed down the sides of the congregation seating. Localisation, intelligibility and overall sound quality were lacking for today’s worship services, which can be attended by over 800 people. Music now also plays a much greater part in many services.
The Church found JD Sound & Video through an internet search and, after seeing the work they had done for other local churches and Catholic high schools, invited them for a consultation. JD Sound & Video designed a system using Community’s E Eries Entasys loudspeakers, having previously used them with gr

UK - Yes featuring Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman, a newly formed group of the progressive rock band's core members, played a well-received show at Manchester Apollo, captured by Eagle Rock Entertainment for DVD. As the filming required precise lighting levels, Jonathan Pask of Illuminate Lighting Ltd designed a reliable multi-user control system of networked Avolites consoles to ensure each look was on point for camera.
"As the show was filmed for release later this year, it needed to be both amazing for the live audience and for those at home," says Pask. "I've used Avolites since I started out as an LD and their consoles have never let me down. The multi-console set-up for Manchester allowed us to both run the show smoothly and provide real-time management of the light levels, so that the cameras could capture high-quality footage."
To power the show's classic rock an

USA - S. Jeremy Peters loves piloting small FPV drones. There is, he says, “no rush quite like it.” He and his wife Alison Peters wanted to share their passion for drone flying with a wider audience. As owners of SJP Productions, a lighting and projection company experienced working festivals, they were in an excellent position to do so. Hooking up with a local brewery, they created one of the first spectator-oriented drone racing events, complete with festival-like lighting, atmospherics and live video feeds all controlled with a three-universe set up built around ChamSys Software.
“Typically drone races are geared toward the racers themselves without a lot of spectators,” said Peters. “Generally, they don’t have much production. Alison and I wanted to draw on our production experience at festivals like Lockn, Peach, Bisco, Mountain Jam, Taste of Country and Gat

UK - Live performance visual specialists Really Creative Media worked with the theatrical production team Collective Productions to create a seamless visual experience for its first UK tour of The Wedding Singer from March to October 2017.
Taking in 33 cities on its initial tour, this new production set in 1985 features wedding singer Robbie’s love life as the central story. Really Creative Media worked as a central part of the production team led by Dan Looney and alongside lighting designer Ben Cracknell to create an animated billboard which is used as a central part of the production’s set throughout the show.
Complementing Francis O’Connor’s moving scenery, a Panasonic laser projector is used to create 80s style adverts and animation on a billboard in the centre of the stage, setting the scene for each part of the story.

South Africa - Saying goodbye to an unforgettable summer, Hunter’s hosted the three Heat Seekers, visiting cities in Durban (4 March at Peoples Park East), Johannesburg (11 March at Mary Fitzgerald Square) and Cape Town (18 March at The Ostrich Farm, off N7). Lighting designers Mbulelo Msuthwana and Keagan Browning from the AV Company programmed on an MA dot2 console with dot2 fader wing. “We loved the simplicity and ease of the MA as well as the node options allowing so many DMX outputs easily spread out,” they both agreed.
Twenty-four Robin 600 LEDWash fixtures were used to wash the entire venue and VIP deck as well as lighting t

UK - The Cure recently completed a 76-date world tour, with lighting, video and rigging supplied by PRG XL Video. The lighting and video design was by Angus ‘Mac’ MacPhail, with creative input from lead singer and founding member of The Cure: Robert Smith.
Mac explained the creative process behind bringing the production to life, and how they dazzled the expectations of die-hard Cure fans: “It’s important to note that Robert Smith was very hands-on with the design for the show—he’s been as much a member of our creative team as he has a band member. When Robert and I first discussed the design, we wanted a very simple look, where the set is the lighting rig, and it’s a very clean, uncluttered stage.
“We started off with the idea for a curved screen at the back of the stage, added a curved riser and pulled the ends of the truss back to extenuate the curve
