USA - Hair care company Paul Mitchell recently drew together the top dealers and salon stylists for a week-long meeting in Las Vegas. The Paul Mitchell Signature Gallery 2004 at the Mandalay Bay featured business meetings in the morning, with a runway of exotic hair-styles parading in the afternoon.

Through it all, a High End Systems Catalyst Pro v3.0 Media Server added hair-raising highlights to the corporate coiffure, the company say. LD JJ Wulf specified Catalyst along with 48 High End Systems Studio Spot CMY automated luminaires and a Flying Pig Systems Wholehog IIconsole for control. PRG provided the production gear.

Wulf explains the set-up: "We had 24 of the 4-k projectors using both Catalyst outputs. (Note: the Sanyo PLC-XP46 projectors used in this event are the same projectors used in the DL1 Digital Light fixture.) I also controlled the video switching through

AVC also has a significant service business.

Recently the partners in AVC decided that they could serve the needs of their market better as part of a larger group - at the same time Electrosonic Ltd was looking for ways in which it could expand its geographical coverage. Because the companies know each other well, having traded together since AVC's founding, their coming tog

USA - Ani Difranco is currently singing her new works on her 'Vote Dammit!' tour, designed to encourage individuals to make their voices known via voting. Political songwriters, activists, comedians and other guests add individual touches to each show along the way. Helping enhance her songs and message every night is a High End Systems Catalyst Pro v3.2 Media Server, along with a rig full of Studio Beam automated luminaires, all supplied by lighting contractor See Factor.

Long-time LD Phil Karatz has used Studio Beams before, but this is his first time to take out Catalyst. He says: "The Catalyst system has worked out great. I used mostly custom content but I also used a bit of the stock content - I like a lot of the art that shipped with version 3.2. I got a lot of content from Ani's office - she has cool art on her records. I also used digital pictures I have taken from

Belgium - Barco has announced the launch of the new compact, powerful SLM R9+ Performer projector, which the company says is based on Texas Instruments' DLP technology and delivers up to 9000 ANSI Lumen.

The SLM R9+ Performer projector, with its compact form-factor, SXGA+ resolution and 9000 ANSI Lumen output, offers a cost-effective option for the 8k - 10k Lumen market segment, say Barco. With an extended lamp life (given as typically 1250 hours), additional dust filters and continued compatibility with existing TLD lenses, the SLM R9+ offers a dynamic, reliable projector with a low total cost of ownership, say Barco. "The new SLM R9+ Performer projector is an extension of Barco's successful SLM Performer range," says Steve Scorse, general manager of Barco Events.

Specifically designed with the needs of the rental and staging industries in mind, the SLM R9+ featur

UK - XL Video is supplying all projection and playback equipment to the new Andrew Lloyd Webber production, Woman in White, at the Palace Theatre in London's West End. XL's Malcolm Mellows worked closely with projection designers Sven Ortel and Dick Straker of Mesmer to realize the ambitious technical requirements needed for video designer Bill Dudley's ideas to come alive onstage. There's been plenty of positive comments, including the projection being described as "impressive" and opening up "new possibilities in the marriage of theatre and cinema" by Michael Billington in The Guardian.

All the show's settings, locations and backdrops are projected onto a 30m wide by 5m high cylindrical projection surface. At certain points, the side sections of the screen track around the stage to form a surface across the front. A section of the screen also splits

Italy - The premiere of Shark Tale - Dreamworks' and distributor UIP's latest animated creation - was staged in spectacular style in Venice's historic Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square) as part of the 2004 Venice Film Festival. Show producers Bob Collins and Sean Glen of Me3 Productions from California brought in UK-based technical production specialist Andy Peat Associates and Venetian production company TESE to realize this major feat of technical production.

This is the first time a show of this nature has been granted permission to take place in the Piazza San Marco, a world heritage site and home to thousands of pigeons. The audience was joined by the film's star 'voice-over talent' including Will Smith, Robert de Niro and Angelina Jolie, along with the film's producers and directors. In addition to the 500 VIPs, approximately 5,500 local guests also enjoyed the evening - free -

UK - Creative Technology has collaborated with set designer Markus Blee to create a spectacular 'virtual' LED backdrop at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith for the final of the MTV Shakedown with Wade Robson, in which lighting and visuals are projected into a 'virtual' LED environment by two double-head Catalyst systems.

Markus Blee presented Adrian Offord and Stuart Young of CT and TV lighting director Gurdip Mahal, with two projected models of the design. Some 138sq.m of 25mm LED display was to be arranged in random shapes, the multi-faced media display enveloping the performers, set off by two 9sq.m Barco iLite 8 panels - one upstage centre of the dancefloor and the other offstage left. The content, provided by moving light operator Ross Williams, would be fired to the four colour-coded 25mm zones via the Catalysts, while the higher resolution Barco screens would take a mixture o

UK - Warrington Borough Council has built a new 24-hour security monitoring control room facility to improve its continued commitment to combat crime. A command wall system incorporating JVC's high resolution D-ILA DLA-SX21 projector and rear projection CinePro screens was specified by Industry Consultant Faber Maunsell.

Jason Todhunter, associate director at Faber Maunsell designed and planned the new facility, and has undertaken all technical project supervision. "Warrington Borough Council required a cutting edge control room facility. Previously CCTV monitoring was undertaken from an outdated control room within Warrington's police headquarters. The new development incorporates Warrington Borough Council's security monitoring as well as care call and emergency planning services," commented Todhunter.

Italy - Although Italian EMI recording artist Vasco Rossi is over 50, he's definitely still the country's rock "enfant terrible" and his huge popularity with young fans was once again confirmed by the crowds at his recent Clear Channel-produced tour to promote his latest album "Buoni e Cattivi" (the Good and the Bad). In fact, the tour kicked off with a sold-out gig at Rome's Olimpico soccer stadium and ran to packed stadia, before finishing with a free show in Catanzaro, to a reported audience of 400,000.

Vasco's fans expect maximum visual impact from his shows and this was no exception: Grandi Schermi (Large Screens), a business unit of Euphon Communication, was responsible for the supply, installation and technical assistance for The three Lighthouse Technologies LED screens used on the impressive set designed by Giò Forma, and Rome's Limelite supplied a

UK - The UK tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Starlight Express' is the country's first touring theatre production to feature 3D film, thanks to a stereoscopic video projection system supplied by London-based 3D specialists Inition.

The 'Duality' projection system - installed and maintained by Inition - recreates the high speed skate races that made the original London show one of the capital's most successful musicals of all time. The new tour builds on the achievements of the 2003/4 US Troika Tour - but, says Inition, "adds even more edge of the seat 3D sequences and jaw-dropping special effects".

Now the same projection system is heading to the UK for a new tour opening in Manchester on November 1st and stretching from Bristol to Edinburgh. Inition is again providing technical support and expert know-how to integrate the system into the UK production.

UK - The Welsh football team's international away fixture against England at Manchester United's Old Trafford ground on Saturday October 9 was seen live at the Millennium Stadium Cardiff courtesy of a giant inflatable Airscreen.

Thousands of Welsh football fans enjoyed the excitement of the World Cup 2006 qualifying international in the comfort of their home stadium, viewed on the largest outdoor screen ever seen in Wales. Erected on the pitch in just 20 minutes, the 18m x 14m (60' x 45') screen was the focal point for the presentation staged by Munich-based TAPE New Media, who also provided the projection. Two Barco projectors with a total light output of 24,000 ANSI lumens were used to provide the larger than life pictures.

The stadium's huge retractable roof, the first of its kind in the UK, was closed to create the perfect surroundings for the big picture show. The match w

UK - At the end of September, the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) held its Annual Awards amid the Baroque splendour of Hawksworth's Christ Church, Spitalfields.

AV company Creative Staging, which has worked with IChemE for many years along with their event-management company, Peter Vary Associates and production company MCB, says it is "used to the challenge of creating a modern awards event in unusual locations". The newly restored Christ Church features authentic 18th century wood panelling and stonework, around which the stage set and equipment had to be sympathetically and carefully installed and operated, to create an empathetic environment for the celebration of the awards.

Creative Staging planned and supplied the set and three screens, with multi-camera live relay, along with extensive sound and lighting systems. An external generator was also suppli

UK - Creative Technology made its production debut with Scarlet productions at the 2004 Mobo Awards, providing a 28sq.m LED display in 16:9 aspect ratio as the centrepiece of a spectacular stage set at the Royal Albert Hall. The nature of the production dictated that the big screen specialists would need to field their highest-resolution display, and the Barco DLite 7 (situated upstage centre) provided the ideal technical solution for Julia Knowles of Scarlet Productions, who handled the TV direction.

The DLite 7 is a unique product, combining a 7mm resolution with short viewing distances, due to the extreme fill factor of the LED components. These were perfect attributes for a show in which the screen took a direct feed from the O21 OB truck via an SDI link, bypassing the usual submix. The signal chain started at front-of-house where content provider Richard Shipman, operating

UK - XL Video supplied equipment and crew to HFM Lighting to help realize the projection of three separate giant moving images onto the curved fascia of Kingston-Upon-Thames Guildhall building. The 50ft high Guildhall was chosen because its circulator shape reflects the 'Zoopraxiscope' invented by Muybridge, which was used to animate film.

The Muybridge Festival celebrated the life and works of Eadweard Muybridge, one of the finest pioneering Victorian photographers who was born in Kingston in April 1830. The majority of his highly acclaimed experimental work was completed in America, and Muybridge is credited with being a founding father of modern cinema.

XL Video supplied three 17,000 lumen Barco ELM R18 projectors to transform Kingston High Street into a public gallery for two evenings as part of a wider series of Muybridge events and exhibitions.

It was the first time that XL has been involved in this high profile event. Lazlett recommended XL to the show's producers, Indigo Television, and the project was managed for XL by Paul Wood.

The screen was custom made for XL by ECT from Matt Brite material to Bill Lazlett's set design, co-ordinated by Wood. It measured 29m wide and was 10m high at the stage right end and 2m high at stage left, curving around the rear of the stage. The projection was via 10 Barco ELM R18 projectors, with five projectors overlaid in two stacks for optimum brightness, situated in the RAH's Grand Tier boxes.

Taking a 'big canvas approach', screen content was created for the show by Richard Turner and his c

UK - Professional audio-visual supplier, Snelling Business Systems of Norwich, has just completed an AV system for the new Jarrold stand at Norwich City Football Club. UK - Large format projection specialist E//T//C UK covered the 323ft high Shell Centre on London's South Bank with giant projected poppies for Remembrance Day 2004. E//T//C was working for media and production company The Bank, who produced the event for Shell UK. This is the third year running that E//T//C UK has illuminated this prime site with high impact projections for the event.

The 26-storey building - once the tallest in the UK - was covered by eight 6kW PIGI projectors that were sited 100m away on the edge of Queen's Walkway (the corresponding riverside path), housed in a curtain-sider truck. Six of the projectors, complete with double scrollers running vertically, produced the poppies, three targeted at the top half of the tower and three at the bottom.
