Canada - The North American premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Wizard of Oz was set for the new year at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre, where a pair of grandMA2s is now on hand to control lighting and video for the new musical.

A.C.T Lighting Canada, in Toronto, supplied the grandMA2s to programmer Joe Allegro of Artistic Illuminations. Hugh Vanstone is the show's lighting designer.

"The show was originally on grandMA 'series 1', but we decided to move all the lighting and video to grandMA2 when the show was remounted in Toronto," says Allegro. "The decision was based on the length of the show commitment: eight months in Toronto and then on tour. In terms of hardware, the grandMA2 is a new platform and very solid; 99 percent of the information from the original production has come across."

Allegro is particularly pleased with the grandMA2's perfor

Denmark - Once confined to concert venues and festival stages, popular music is increasingly found in the halls of academia. Newly equipped with a variety of Meyer Sound wide-coverage loudspeakers, the Rhythmic Music Conservatory (Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium or RMC) in Copenhagen has been at the forefront of contemporary music education since it was established in 1986. Today RMC offers coursework in music performance, music education, music and movement education, sound technology, music management, and songwriting.

With a direct connection to the Danish Ministry of Culture, the RMC prides itself on high standards and has consistently maintained an audio inventory to match. For its latest upgrade of the concert hall, EBB-consult outlined an exacting tender process, obliging companies to propose a loudspeaker configuration able to satisfy two distinct objectives.

Germany - Rental company Sound Linear, based in northern Westfalia, has completed a diverse run of shows with its new Nexo STM modular line array PA, after taking delivery of the first system in Germany from Nexo distributor audiovation.

"We saw the possibilities of STM immediately," says Sound Linear's Kalle Hogrefe. "Its modularity allows us to use different components of the system separately, making it suitable for large and small events alike. And we can use it for a whole range of different music, from classical events, through to singer/songwriters and rock and roll."

In a very short time, Sound Linear has already deployed its STM system for a variety of events and tours, including dates with British bands from the 1970s on their reunion tour Sweet, Smokie, Showaddywaddy and Boney M.

"At this stage, we'd only taken delivery of the M46 Main and

UK - A.C. Entertainment Technologies (AC-ET) Ltd's Audio division recently supplied the University of Cumbria with a quantity of channel 38 compliant Sennheiser wireless microphone and in-ear monitoring systems for their busy Performing Arts and Media courses.

By 31 December 2012 all production industry wireless radio microphone and IEM system users were required by law to switch to the new UK wide channel 38 (606-614 MHz) frequencies in the UK.

Understanding the importance of the digital switchover, University of Cumbria's senior sound technician, Brian Brooks was keen to ensure the University complied with the new regulations. He therefore approached A.C. Audio, who provide a comprehensive digital switchover help and advice service for anyone in need of assistance.

Having successfully used Sennheiser radio microphones at the University for a number of years, Brian was natu

USA - The need and importance of accurately assessing the point loads of substantial touring rigs is gaining momentum. With several articles published in the trade press at the end of last year, it was refreshing to see this crucial safety issue receive public airing. To underscore the significance of the issue, Load Cell Rental, who only last November announced its formal arrival in the marketplace, has now made a major move to improve and expand the range of tools available to concerned riggers and promoters.

"When we first looked at the rationale behind a weighing service for large complex touring systems, it was clear that a significant number of measuring devices would be needed to adequately fulfil the needs of the industry," said Load Cell Rental founder, Richard Young. "Our initial investment was for 60 two ton load cells from Motion Labs. Now, we've just

Andrew Dowling, Rob Zombie Systems Engineer, did the system design, setup, and provided a complete rigging overview.

USA - FocusTrack, the leading lighting documentation software, recently helped Blue Man Group document Kevin Adam's lighting design for the Group's new Las Vegas production, performing now at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino.

The show marked the debut of FocusTrack's new support for MA Lighting's grandMA2 console, which received its first beta test on the show and came through it with flying colours.

"Joel Silver, the associate lighting designer on the show, has just the worst timing - or perhaps a very pioneering spirit," comments FocusTrack's creator, Rob Halliday. "Back in 2007 he got in touch wanting to use FocusTrack with the Eos console on Young Frankenstein; the show became the first to use FocusTrack with an Eos. Now here he was again, asking to use FocusTrack with a grandMA2 - something we were in the process of doing, but certainly weren't done

The lighting was supplied by Resolution X with eight Martin MAC Vipers making their operatic debut in Australia.

"I had been eager to use Martin MAC Vipers for some time and so I pitched the idea to Richard Vabre," said Peter Darby, technical coordinator for Victorian Opera. "He was very keen too and used them throughout the show specifically for some fantastic gobo washes across the stage. The Viper's multiple gobo wheels are great for this. I was very pleased with their performance; they're very punchy, fast and bright. I also foun

UK - There is something timeless about Kander and Ebb's Cabaret at the Savoy Theatre, London.

Sound designer Ben Harrison reports, "Orbital Sound happens to own some d&b F1222s, these are the successor to the F1220 that was launched in 1988. Despite the age I did specify them deliberately. I have had occasion to use them a few times on bits and pieces and always liked them for their smoothness and total transparency. I've been waiting some time, looking for a show to put them on." The product of Harrison's ardour is the venerable F1222, a two-way active loudspeaker with a precise 60 x 40 degree dispersion; a loudspeaker that occupies the mythology of d&b audiotechnik like some overwrought character from Wagner's Ring cycle.

"I did the sound design for the previous production of Cabaret when it played the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in 2006

Kemper commented, "In the past years we have had a good experience with the grandMA 'series 1' because of its excellent networking capabilities, the easy setup and the personalisation of the desk with the potential to previsualise the show using grandMA 3D. Now the grandMA2 makes things even more comfortable and enhances the perf

UK - Lighting designer Peter Mumford has used ETC's latest generation of LED fixtures - the Source Four LED Lustr+ profile - to light Old Times at The Harold Pinter Theatre (formerly the Comedy Theatre) in London's West End.

Locked away in a secluded farmhouse, the three characters in Old Times reminisce about their early days together in London. But with conflicting memories and underlying sexual tensions, the past suddenly feels vividly present.

"Having 'road tested' individual fixture units previously," says Mumford, "I wanted to try them incorporated as a significant part of my rig design. This is the only real way that one can properly try them out in the context of a production. For Old Times, I particularly wanted to be able to change colour subtly within very long, slow changing cues.

"I used 24 units - in three banks of eight

USA - Miami Gardens-based Beachsound & Lighting, Inc. - now an official L-Acoustics Certified Provider - reports that it has installed a Kara system at Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek, Florida.

The new system went into The Pavilion, a Sprung structure that was converted into an intimate 1,200-seat performance venue during the casino's recent $150m expansion project.

Today, artists performing in the showroom benefit from left and right arrays each comprised of eight Kara enclosures flanked by LF arrays of three SB18 subs. Below each Kara array is an additional stack of three SB28 for additional low-end reinforcement, while five coaxial 8XT are spaced out across the stage lip for front-fill. LA-RAKs loaded with LA8 amplified controllers power and process the entire system.

"We installed a V-DOSC system into Hard Rock Live Hollywood, another Seminole property, several yea

UK - Marl International has transformed the sports hall at one of the North of England's most prestigious independent schools, Abbey Gate College, Cheshire, by installing LED lighting that improved the hall environment, and provided much brighter and more even lighting that comes on instantly.

Commenting on the installation of LED lights at Abbey Gate College, business manager Andrew Bache said, "The real appeal of Marl LED lights for us is the convenience and improvement in the environment. Though the sodium lights were adequate for football and gymnastics, the hall is also used for examinations and social events. We were able to dramatically increase the light level in the hall, ensuring the corners as well as the central area is brightly lit. The LED lights are much whiter and very much more even, since the output of the sodium lamps degrades noticeably as they age."

Central to the system is a Bi-amp Audiaflex Mainframe with Cobranet, controlling a network of radio microph
