When Legoland Deutschland opened its doors to the public on 17 May this year, it was almost a year ahead of schedule. The park was completed more than nine months early, thanks to the efficiency and professionalism of the people and companies involved in the project! Located near Günzburg in Southern Germany, Legoland Deutschland is made up of seven individually-themed areas, including Miniland, which features miniature replicas of original buildings from all over the world. The park includes more than 40 rides and attractions, including three theatres.

The lighting design of the park was carried out by Gallegos Lighting Design in California, which has previously worked with Legoland, designing the lighting system for its park in Carlsbad, California. Karl Haas, Gallegos Lighting Design's senior associate, created the park's lighting control systems, working with ETC's western regional sales manager, David Lincecum, in the tendering process.

For Legoland Carlsbad, Haas specified Unison for the entire park-wide system, "but, as Legoland Deutschland is a seasonal park and would not be open at night, there was no need for such a sophisticated system there," said Haas. Still, ETC's controls and luminaires were chosen for the park's three theatres as well as two 'dark rides'. "Gallegos Lighting has a long-standing relationship with ETC," said Haas, "and as most of our designers have a theatrical background, they're all well acquainted with ETC equipment."

For the Xtreme Theatre, a venue which shows a 4D film show, Haas specified an ETC Expression 3x console. The two other theatres, Lego Arena, a stuntshow theatre, and Puppet Theatre, the puppet show stage, got, respectively, an ETC Express 48/96 and an Express 24/48 console. For two indoor rides, Dragon Coaster and Lego Racers Drome Racing, Expression Lighting Playback Controllers (LPCs) were specified. Able to replay lighting looks programmed on an Expression, ETC's LPC offers complete automated show control in one 19" rack mounted unit. For these five venues, ETC also supplied more than 300 Source Fours plus 312 channels of Sensor dimming. "I am always satisfied with the quality and good value of ETC's products," said Haas, adding: "and the level of support we receive, at all stages, from the tendering process right through to the installation process, is invaluable."

The main contractor responsible for all technical installations in Legoland Deutschland was ABB-Cegelec. California-based company Edward Technologies Inc handled the main sound and video projection as well as animation control and German lighting company Think Abele GmbH was responsible for installing the show lighting equipment. All ETC equipment was supplied by Lightpower Showtechnik GmbH.
