The Netherlands - Between 24 January and 3 February 2008 at Ahoy, Rotterdam, over 200,000 people flocked to see the tenth birthday party of Vrienden van Amstel 2008 Live music spectacular featuring many Dutch live acts.

Each artist performs two tracks and on the third track, the next artist comes on stage, sings part of the song before taking over to perform their two songs. With so many different acts and styles, it demonstrated the versatility of the MagicQ consoles, say the company.

Every day, the opening sequence of the show included a two-minute drum solo with audio, lighting, video and pyrotechnic all synchronised together using SMPTE timecode. The two MagicQ MQ100 Pro consoles each took a SMPTE feed to ensure perfect synchronisation with a total of 77 different lighting cues fired automatically during the opening sequence.

Writing in The Times, John Niven makes some interesting observations on how the music industry has changed: "The late Nineties are increasingly starting to resemble a glorious last hurrah for the music industry, a spangled fall-of-Rome era. The sales of CDs have declined year-on-year since 2000. Profit margins have been decimated. Bands give their music away free with newspapers to drive up ticket sales for their profitable live shows - a complete reversal of the time where an act lost money on the road in order to drive CD sales.

And on the green front, over to Ken Livingston, Mayor of London: "The Arcola Theatre is a good example of why London's cultural sector is so dynamic and successful. Arcola is leading the theatre industry in developing this premiere sustainable production and I know that many other theatres are now keen to follow. The Living Unknown Soldier is

Speaking of his decision to return, Whitright said, "I've built this business out of a garage to what it is today. Along the way I've been joined by an extraordinary group of people. It is their commitmen

Counterfeiting and piracy are major problems facing many industries today - perfume, films, music recordings, designer fashion wear and much more are affected. It's good to see that the organisers of the upcoming PALME show in Dubai are joining show organisers such as PLASA and Frankfurt Messe in taking a tough stand against the copycats to support legitimate companies in the professional audio, light and AV industries whose long-term investment in product development and branding is threatened by the counterfeiters.

On the subject of the Middle East, the region continues to grow as a serious marketplace for our industries. Rosco will present a check to Behind the Scenes each year at the LDI Show.

Ame Strong, Rosco's colour filter product manager says, "I am impressed at how easy it is to apply for a grant by simply downloading an Application from the website and also how quickly the grant applications are reviewed. The closure of the latest incarnation of London's Marquee Club is a sad occasion that marks the end of another chapter in the venue's colourful 50-year history. Readers may care to reflect that in the month it first opened its doors, April 1958, stereo long playing records (LPs) went on sale for the first time and after two years on Broadway, My Fair Lady opened successfully at the Drury Lane Theatre, London, and VERA, the UK's first video recorder was used by the BBC during a transmission of the current affairs programme Panorama.

Meyer Sound's expansion plans for its operations in Germany is another welcome indicator that the German economy is easing intro better shape after a long time in the doldrums. UK - Marquee Audio is in administration. The Shepperton-based supply, distribution and install operation which has been in business for 20 years, is understood to have been experiencing financial difficulties.

Robert Keys of Tenon Recovery was appointed joint administrator of the company by the High Court last month. "This move effectively bubble wraps the company to protect it from its creditors and give it some breathing space in which to sort out its affairs," says Keys.

The administrators are in talks with potential purchasers of the company and its constituent parts and report some interest from within the industry.

There are three levels of creditors - chargeholders such as banks that have issued secured loans, employees and general trade creditors. How much anyone gets will be determined by how much the company or its parts are sold for.

In addition, the Songs of the Sea show in Singapore was in January named Best Tourist Attraction in Southeast Asia by the ASEAN Tourism Forum. This large-scale fantasy spectacular, devised and produced by ECA
