South Africa - SABC (The South African Broadcasting Corporation) set up the hub for its World Cup broadcast studio in Exhibition 1 at the Sandton Convention Centre, central Johannesburg. All the match coverage and several regular programmes are being transmitted from the studio for the duration of the tournament.

With a set designed by Dewet Meyer and a lighting design by André Rossouw of SABC and Francois van der Merwe of MJ Event Gear, a grandMA full-size was chosen to control all the lighting. This is supplied by MJ and was also programmed by van der Merwe, who is sharing operating duties with Theo Roodt due to the demanding schedule, which includes the accommodation of several regular SABC programmes as well as comprehensive match coverage.

USA - One of Broadway's recent hits, American Idiot, received the honours of 'Best Scenic Design of a Musical' and 'Best Lighting Design of a Musical' at this year's Tony Awards Show. The award-winning scenic elements of the show centre around numerous video displays and projections, driven by a system comprising a total of 17 Hippotizer HD media servers.

With a musical score based on Green Day's album of the same name, American Idiot debuted on Broadway in April under the direction of Michael Mayer. Mayer led a creative team that included scenic design by Christine Jones, lighting design by Kevin Adams, and video and projection design by Darrel Maloney. UAE - Promoter Fluid Production brought Grammy-nominated DJ David Guetta to the Dubai World Trade Centre on 9 April to rock his Middle Eastern fans. His eclectic musical style of combining electro, hip hop and R&B called for a pulsating lighting approach.

Lighting designer Frank Schotman created the special lighting and chose to work with Martin Professional's MAC 301 Wash, MAC 401 Dual and MAC 2000 range luminaires, as well as Martin LC Plus LED panels. The lighting equipment was supplied by Eclipse and acquired from Martin Middle East.

Schotman placed most of the MAC gear on five finger trusses that covered most of the event centre hall, allowing him to envelope the audience in color. He also placed Atomic strobes and other lighting on five truss towers for special effects.

Lite Alternative's Paul Normandale has designed the six floor-mounted impression XL LED heads into an elaborate motion controlled set.

DBN was asked to light the dance/indie/crossover by event organisers The Warehouse Project and Ear To The Ground - with whom they have worked on many other projects.

Denmark - ETC, working with its Danish distributor Bico, has recently completed commissioning of a new dimming and control system for the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.

Working in the main Concert Hall, which holds over 1,000 people, Bico installed a Unison Paradigm system with 24 ways of dimming to control the house and rehearsal lights, along with an sACN network system, all connected both to a new Ion control desk and several wall mounted fader stations. Two 48-way Sensor dimming racks and five gateways were also fitted for show light.

The lighting designer of this event, Liufeng Shu, renowned for having realized several shows of international significance, including the Singapore International Cantonese Opera Festival and the Qingdao Austria Sail, has chosen the iSpot Extreme 6000, the iSpot Flex and the CF 7 Hard Edge X, which are all Coemar products.

The iSpot Flex, launched in 2002 at the LDI in Las Vegas, boast three patents. They are the first moving heads made with 2000 W discharge lamps, featuring a carbon fibre body.

Money Matters - British music fans spent £1.45bn on tickets for gigs and festivals in 2009 Concert and festival promoters have warned that ticket prices could go up as songwriters consider requesting a greater share of live music takings. Currently, 3% of all gig ticket money goes to PRS For Music, which passes it on to writers and composers. It is reviewing that rate, saying it needs to ensure a "fair balance" between music fans and creators.

Melvin Benn, who runs the Reading, Leeds and Latitude festivals, described it as "blatant money-grabbing". He told BBC News, "The quantum leap in what the PRS are being paid by live music promoters is very, very substantial compared to what it was 10 years ago. Investors in People is a national standard which helps organisations transform their business performance. On air since 1996, Storytellers is a programme that bases its popularity on the intimate meetings between the stars and the audience who can ask their favourite stars questions. Over the years the programme has had guests such as Sting, Elton John, Alanis Morissette and Coldplay.

UK - Topshop has been promoting the charity Teenage Cancer Trust to help raise awareness of the charity and also donations. To do this, they recently hosted a series of picnics in parks across the UK entitled Topshop Bandstand Picnics for Teenage Cancer Trust. Family Ltd who executed the events on behalf of Topshop, contacted Stage Electrics and asked them to support this very worthwhile charity by supplying sound equipment, staging and technical support.

The events which took place over a two-week period in June, saw some of the UK music scene's hottest and developing talent take centre stage at Regents Park- London, Stanley Park-Liverpool, Castle Park- Bristol and the Vale, Birmingham.

Featuring over 1,000sq.ft of 6mm pitch LED video distributed across four main screens, over 91m of 10mm entertainment strips and scoring matrix, and a customised underside display, the Bradley Centre's centre-hung display will blaze with over 232sq.m and nearly 2m pixels of LED video.

UK - the Cubehenge installation at this year's Glastonbury festival proved popular, receiving rave reviews from web forums, blogs and even the Guardian newspaper. The full scale re-interpretation of Stonehenge, the famous stone circle, really came to life as the sun set and night closed in. Each cube was internally illuminated and individually controlled to provide a spectacular and rhythmic light show, complementing the acts performing in the Dance Village.

Cubehenge, the brainchild of Cubes Concept, was conceived last autumn with Glastonbury Festival in mind. Constructed using IBCs (1000 litre containers usually employed in the transportation of liquids), each cube was fitted with an LED colour changing unit supplied by UK distributor Batmink Ltd and was individually controlled via DMX using ChamSys MagicQ software and Mini Wing controller.
