Arts Funding Update - A reduction in the number of grants awarded by the Arts Council could spell the death knell for many cultural organisations across the country, according to a report by MPs. The size and the speed of the cuts threatened the long-term viability of many facilities but spending on arts had ballooned to unsustainable levels in recent years, said the paper by the parliamentary Select Committee on Culture.

"We are entering a difficult period for the arts," said committee head and Tory MP John Whittingdale. "They can't be excluded from the general need to find spending reductions and that does mean there'll have to be cuts."

Wednesday is funding judgment day, when 1,300 organisations across England will find out - in an email between 7.30 and 9.30 in the morning - how much money they will get - if any - from the Arts Council. Almost half of a

Finland - The city of Kangasala in southern Finland with its natural beauty and mineral water springs has been a popular travel destination for centuries. When it was time to refurbish the street and public area lighting it was also an opportunity to put an inviting face on the entrances to the city. The task was given to lighting design firm Valoa.

The freezing Finnish winters presented lead designer Arto Heiskanen with many practical challenges, but also with a white canvass of snow that he painted with colour using custom designed RGB LED fixtures to augment the monochrome utility lights. These fixtures, together with LumenRadio's CRMX units, were integrated into a large number of lighting poles and bollards spread along the streets and intersections located on the perim¬eter of the city to give visitors a warm welcome and a pleasant good-bye to remember.
