Denmark/UK - Martin Professional's EMEA sales organisation has announced the hiring of David Martin as key account manager serving the UK market. Martin is a familiar face to many at Martin as he worked as club sales manager at Martin UK in the early 2000s.

Martin's new position as key account manager encompasses developing and managing business in the television lighting segment and maintaining direct contact with TV LD's and companies that supply the television production industry, as well as managing general accounts across the entertainment sector.

Martin brings over 22 years of lighting and audiovisual experience to the position, a span that includes the operation of his own company, Total Audio Visual Ltd, over the last 10 years in which he maintained his mastery of Martin products by selling and installing Martin lighting systems.

Fringe Record - Sales of tickets at this year's Edinburgh Fringe are up by 3% on last year. According to figures released by the Fringe Society 1,877,000 tickets were sold by its box office over the last three and a half weeks. It is another increase on the record breaking sales achieved in 2010. Poor weather during August and a greater concentration of venues in one part of the city did not appear to have had an adverse effect on ticket sales. During the Fringe this year there were a record-breaking 2,542 shows, with about 21,000 performers presenting 41,689 performances in 258 venues.

Off Broadway - Broadway shows were cancelled on Saturday as New York braced itself for the full force of Hurricane Irene to strike. They included Cirque du Soleil's Zarkana at Radio City Music Hall and War Horse at Lincoln Center Theatre. "The safety and security of thea

USA - Running on a mere 189 watts of electricity, Elation Professional's new Platinum Beam 5R DMX ACL beam effect isn't an obvious choice for lighting up large outdoor concert venues. But this little moving head, powered by the Philips MSD Platinum 5R lamp, recently proved it had the beam brawn to illuminate, not one, but two shows in big open-air spaces: the L.A. Rising concert at the Los Angeles Coliseum, headlined by Rage Against the Machine; and Coldplay's performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which was staged in a tennis stadium and shot from overhead by a blimp.

Todd Roberts of Visions Lighting saved the day at L.A. Rising by substituting the Platinum Beam 5R, after the festival's original lighting proposal turned out to be too costly to execute. "I had a proposal for the L.A. Rising show that called for a lot of larger, higher-powered fixtures. But a week out, th

UK - According to data released recently, the eurozone economy has slipped closer to stagnation and there are growing fears of a double dip recession. Financial reports show that the region's manufacturing sector has contracted for the first time since September 2009 and growth is slowing across the board, however many companies in our industry report healthy order books and busy diaries.

Against a background of such uncertainty, PLASA CEO Matthew Griffiths suggests there has never been a more important time to talk to each other. "When financial experts are sceptical about future economic growth, we have to take note and be prepared for market changes. Fortunately, this is a strong industry that performs well and understands how to innovate. It's also thankfully one that believes in openly discussing issues, so it's encouraging that people want to discuss what the next 12

CAST will be demonstrating the new 3D version, which ships later this year, of the ground breaking BlackTrax technology at PLASA 2011.

BlackTrax 3D is, the company says, "a revolutionary system for tracking people and objects with unbelievable accuracy, in real time". The system uses a proprietary IR placed on each object to track their X, Y, and Z - the 3D coordinates. The new system also drives true 3D audio output for the first time in the world, says CAST.

CAST will also demonstrate a prototype of its new BlackTrax 6D - which tracks the position and orientation for 3D plus roll, pitching, and yaw - all in real-time.

Using leading-edge proprietary IR, BlackTrax can track all the parameters of each uniquely tagged object in the defined 3D space. Should the IR line of sight be obstructed (which is the primary mode of tracking), the onboard accelerometer delivers redundan
