USA - Rock legends Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood recently reunited to tour North America: Escondido, California-based Sound Image provided the pro audio equipment, including a selection of JBL VerTec line arrays powered by Crown amplifiers, all fed sound by Clapton's long-time live sound engineer Robert Collins at front-of-house.

A sell-out reunion date at New York's Madison Square Garden last year paved the way for the 2009 "Two Legends, One Live Experience" tour, which spanned 14 cities in 20 days, beginning at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey and culminating at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The nightly set list included several songs from the classic 1969 album Blind Faith, which Clapton and Winwood recorded with bandmates Ginger Baker and Rick Grech.

The live sound reinforcement system for the just-completed tour included a total of 84 VerTec

On The World Stage - Robbie Williams' comeback concert for the BBC Electric Proms will be broadcast in cinemas around the world. The concert on 20 October will be beamed live to almost 200 screens across Europe. It will also be shown later in Australia and South Africa. Williams said: "It's very exciting to think that a one-off performance I play in London can be seen simultaneously by people all across the world."

The proms concert will be the singer's first major show in three years. It will also be broadcast on Radio 1. The high definition screening is being billed as the largest live music cinematic event of its kind in Europe, and has been put together by BBC Worldwide. The commercial arm of the corporation recently beamed The Last Night of the Proms into cinemas around the world.

UK - Nottingham-based hire company, Merlin PA, recently purchased an Allen & Heath iLive-T system, comprising an iDR-48 MixRack with iLive-T112 Control Surface, to add to its touring inventory.

"The day we received the system I took it straight out on a rock show with only 30 minutes prep time, half of which was spent unboxing everything," reports Merlin PA's Graham White. "I played around with the effects and scenes and got 100% confident with the system within an hour. The show ended too soon, I was enjoying myself."

Since its debut, the iLive-T has mainly been used for the global promos, shows and live appearances of former Destiny's Child star, Kelly Rowland.

White has also taken advantage of iLive's control flexibility. When confronted with limited FOH space in a Nottingham nightclub, he says, "There was no room for a mixing console in the tiny

Germany - Neumann received "an exceptionally enthusiastic response" to the presentation of the first digital shotgun mic at the recent IBC in Amsterdam. The acoustic properties of the KMR 81 D are based on those of its analogue counterpart, which has been in successful applications worldwide for many years. Thus, it is a short shotgun mic with a pickup angle of 90 degrees and almost frequency-independent damping of sound originating from the side.

The digital version has integrated Solution-D circuit technology which is already familiar from other Neumann microphones. This includes an A/D converter that is specifically adapted to the capsule, and the option of using numerous signal processing features that have proved very helpful, particularly in an electronic news gathering (ENG) environment. The rapidly operating peak/compressor limiter has been found to be especial

UK / USA - PLASA (headquartered in the UK) and ESTA (headquartered in North America), two of the leading bodies worldwide for those working in the live events, entertainment and communications industries, have signed a Letter of Intent to merge.

The announcement comes on the back of long-term strategic reviews conducted by both Associations who believe that uniting as one body will lead to a stronger voice for members, the enhancement of existing initiatives and an expansion of the range of benefits and services.

The proposed merger has the full backing of both the ESTA Board of Directors and the PLASA Executive Committee who voted on the proposal this Summer and who will formally recommend the move to their respective memberships, subject to due diligence being completed successfully, during the Spring/Summer of 2010. If both memberships vote to go ahead, the first stage of t

The Netherlands Long time Sound Projects dealer Live Music installed the third Sound Projects system based on DreamLines in a year. This time, it was in the totally renovated former iron-factory Drufabriek complex in Ulft. The new complex houses not only the new theatre and a music & dance hall but also a music school, practice rooms for bands, a library, a gallery, meeting rooms and a restaurant.|

The theatre as well as the pop auditorium has been provided with DreamLines. In the Pop&Dance Hall, the DreamLines are augmented by two SP2-10 bass horns per side. Concealed pairs of SP3-15s are also deployed and there is an extra set of SP2-10 at hand for special events.

The other auditorium is built as a traditional theatre. Here also DreamLines are installed, with one SP3-15 on the floor per side. MD live music Bart Smits comments, "All audio elements are interchangeable and

Australia - Jands Production Services has purchased 62 Crown MA9000i touring power amplifiers. "We were looking for a new, lightweight, high-powered amplifier and we've had a long history with Crown as we've always been happy with their products," remarked Jim Straw, JPS' general manager.

However, JPS still put the Crown MA9000i amplifiers through rigorous testing before deciding upon the purchase: "We did some listening tests and the overall majority picked the 9000i amplifiers over the other amplifiers we were listening to," added Jim. "We decided to replace a number of amplifiers driving some of our boxes with the 9000i's and we've been very happy with them."

Several of the MA9000i amplifiers are installed at Sydney's Luna Park where they run the JBL VertTec 4888 speakers and 4880 subs. More have been placed into JPS's monitor systems powering

Denmark - DPA Microphones has released The Human Kind, a corporate endeavour to support environmental causes by creating local jobs and improving the climate globally. Working closely with Danish energy company SEAS-NVE, DPA has released The Human Kind to raise money for Greening Your Future, a reforestation project in Durban, South Africa.

The idea of getting involved in environmental concerns and make a commitment to a charity project which can make a difference was inspired by this year's COP15 United Nat

UK - The Pavilion, one of Glasgow's oldest and best loved variety theatre venues, has recently overhauled its FOH system with a pair of Tannoy VQ 100 full-range loudspeakers. The new VQ 100s add a new level of clarity, definition and presence to the performances within the historic 1449-seat auditorium and have gone down well with both cast and audiences since they were installed during the summer season.

Having first opened on its corner site at the top of Glasgow's Renfield Street in 1904, the Pavilion Theatre is a rare example these days of a privately run performance venue that has carefully retained its period character, having avoided any significant renovations or acoustic treatments that would ruin the décor and atmosphere of the auditorium.

This was an important consideration when the venue management sought to upgrade the audio system. Discretion was key, with

Italy - New Sound Service chose Proel sound reinforcement systems for Tim Cup 2009, a major sports event attended many Italian football fans each summer.

The leading Italian football teams are the protagonists of this competition which is usually also the first opportunity for them to introduce their new players and line-ups before the start of the national championship.

This year, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan competed for the Tim Cup at the Stadio Adriatico in Pescara, whose sound reinforcement system was complemented by a Proel Axiom system. The system chosen was made up of: 24 AX2265P AXIOM series vertical array compact speakers, 12 AX1115SP AXIOM compact subs, four Edge212P point source array speakers, four Edge121SP subs, six Proel PSW2600 amplifiers, four AXPACKK10 amplifier racks plus DSO digital processors.

These events offer young people aged 13 and above a taste of the job roles available behind the scenes and offstage in technical theatre and live music events.

Pupils from local schools will meet and experience the work of a number of professionals including lighting and sound technicians, marketing and stage managers and designers, in venues from the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth, up to the SAGE in Gateshead. Behind the scenes staff will share the tricks of their trade and experiences, working out of the 'spotlight'.

Offstage is produced by The National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural Skills (NSA), a network of industry speciali

UK - Edirol is updating the R-09HR field recorder with free v2.0 software to include many features requested by their user base.

The new v2.0 software makes the unit an even more rounded and complete recording package, and includes some great additions for journalists, musicians, songwriters, hobbyist recorders, says the company.

The first big new feature is on-board wave editing. This means that an external computer is no longer needed to edit R-09HR recordings as both Divide and Combine features are included. This adds a level of 'in-the-box' flexibility that will benefit all sorts of users who will now be able to create professional edits on location - wherever they are.

A new chromatic-tuner has also been added with two display modes. This is designed for the many musicians who use the R-09HR to record live performances. Now they can tune up with the R-09HR before they p

Australia - Audinate has announced that its Dante networking solution, the Dante-MY16-AUD card, has won the 2009 EDN Innovation Award in Australia for Best Application of Field Programmable Logic. "We are honoured to be recognised for innovation by EDN. We specifically chose the Xilinx FPGA implementation because it also gave us flexibility in the future to upgrade and enhance our Dante networking solution," said Chris Ware, VP of Engineeri

UK - Harman International has announced the successful completion of an advanced networked audio system at Turf Moor, the stadium of English Premiership football club, Burnley FC. The club management engaged acoustic consultants, AMS Acoustics and integrators ETA Sound to design and install a fully integrated PA/VA compliant public address system that would put Turf Moor system in the same league as Europe's leading stadium systems.

The resulting system, designed and controlled using Harman HiQnet System Architect features components from Harman Professional brands including JBL, Crown and BSS Audio.

AMS Acoustics had already implemented an earlier first phase upgrade last season to bring three stands into VA compliance. During the course of this exercise the capture of a full range of measurements was required and the resultant data, after analysis, was used as the cornerston

USA - Over the course of seven decades, the Sturgis motorcycle rally has grown from a small regional affair in 1938, into an all-out biker extravaganza.

The first Sturgis motorcycle rally in 1938 was a relatively tame affair, and remained so until well into the late 1960s, when films like Easy Rider and Hunter S. Thompson's book Hell's Angels fuelled the rise of the outlaw biker mystique. Since then, the festival has taken on a life of its own, and for a few weeks out of the year this pastoral community of 6,000 in South Dakota's Black Hills becomes the Harley Davidson capital of the world, with attendance estimates of upwards of 700,000 (slightly more than the population of the entire state).

On tap, for the musical portion of the festivities this year, were Aerosmith, George Thorogood, Toby Keith, Billy Squier, Lita Ford, Tesla, Hinder, Saving Abel, Buckcherry,

Germany - This summer, Berlin's State Opera (Staatsoper unter den Linden) presented the third Opera For All event (Oper für alle) to more than 50,000 spectators who filled the city's historic Bebelplatz. A Meyer Sound system featuring the Milo line array loudspeaker and the UPQ-1P loudspeaker provided sound reinforcement for the public simulcast of Richard Wagner's landmark opera Tristan and Isolde, followed by an open-air concert of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and Romeo and Juliet Overture on the next day, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, the State Opera's general music director.

The free-of-charge classical music event was supported by Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, and was attended by German President Horst Köhler, who said, "Opera For All opens up opera to wide parts of the society. Opera must not only be high culture for the wel

Monte was systems applications specialist, pro sound, for Bosch's Communications Systems Division.

"Monte touched many lives over the course of an exceptional career," says Daniel Nix, VP of sales, Americas, for Bosch's Communications Systems Division. "He was a mentor to many, and helped take hundreds of individuals and companies to the next level with education and technology. We were humbled by the amount of inquiries we received in the wake of his passing, from friends and colleagues asking 'Is there anything we can do?'

UK - An RSS M-400 48-channel digital console, complete with Digital Snake, and Cakewalk Sonar and REAC software, has been used to record a live album for up-and-coming indie rockers The Joy Formidable.

Backstage at north London's Garage venue, Roland Systems Group technical wizards Martin Thomas and Simon Kenning had good reason to admire the super-compact footprint of the RSS M-400 digital console, which enabled them to fit an entire live recording set-up as well as two engineers and a three-piece band into a 10'x 8' dressing room.

The RSS technology maintained a low profile in the club. The use of a single S-4000 Digital Snake stage box meant that the live recording team caused less than minimal disruption to the venue and the band's FOH engineer, yet was able to capture a live performance in 48kHz 24-bit broadcast-quality audio. Using the S-4000 Digital Snake 'standalone',

USA - Introduced at the AES Convention at the Javits Center in New York City this week, Laser-Accurate microphone transducer technology from Schwartz Engineering & Design (SED) "revolutionizes the concept of the microphone".

David Schwartz, president of SED and developer of Laser-Accurate technology, believes that existing microphone manufacturers will be best positioned to take microphones to the next level by combining the Laser-Accurate technology with their vast design and manufacturing experience.

"Rather than start my own company again to manufacture products based on this technology, I see the benefit in letting already established professional audio manufacturers license it and apply it to their own designs," says Schwartz, who founded CompuSonics in 1984 and grew it into a leading developer and manufacturer of digital audio workstations and digital

Belgium - Square Brussels, a new event space in the Belgian capital, recently purchased Studer Vista 5 and Vista 5 SR consoles as part of the sound reinforcement system for its auditorium. Belgium-based company Play, based in Nazareth, installed the consoles, which were purchased through Studer's Belgian representative HeynenNV.

Square Brussels offers 13,500sq.m of meeting rooms, exhibition space and a state-of-the-art auditorium. The venue is in the heart of Brussels and is located only 300m from the Royal Palace and next to the Museum of Arts and the Royal Library.

"The Studer Vista 5 and Vista 5 SR with its Vistonics interface are highly intuitive and very easy to use, which is perfect because during a live performance, the operator should be totally concerned with making the sound perfect as opposed to worrying about which button he is pressing," says Jos Jorisse

UK - Adlib has designed and installed an L-Acoustics dV-DOSC sound system into Manchester live music venue, Band on the Wall.

The landmark 350-capacity venue on Swan Street in the Northern Quarter of Manchester's city centre has just been completely renovated, restored and reborn by registered charity Inner City Music with the help of a £4 million combined award from the Arts Council England, Manchester City Council and Lottery Heritage Fund to transform the venue into a 21st century centre of music with strong community ties.

The system was designed by Adlib's Roger Kirby who says: "We all agreed that dV-DOSC rig would work best in the space offering a detailed high frequency and solid low end response, with the system also having adequate headroom for the eclectic programme of live events that are planned."

The music will encompass a wide range of musical g

Ireland - An Outline system reinforced the proceedings at Dublin's Storehouse 13, St. James Gate that marked 250 years of production of Guinness. To commemorate the occasion, Storehouse 13, which is a large hop store, was converted for one night into a live stage and TV studio.

3,000 ticket-winning guests were entertained by Sir Tom Jones, Estelle, Dizzee Rascal and Kasabian. The sound system - supplied by Britannia Row - was Outline's Butterfly: 12 CDH 483s per hang plus six Subtech 218s, powered by Outline's T9 amplifiers and controlled via Dolby Lake processing.
