USA - Opened a year ago as a multipurpose worship and performance centre for young people at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA, The Refinery is an all-Lab.gruppen installation, with multiple C Series amplifiers being used to power a number of sound systems.

"It's a great result," stated Greg Baker, Saddleback Church's technical director. "Our new gymnasium and auditorium within The Refinery are very well served by our Lab.gruppen amplifiers, which have been totally reliable since we added them in June of last year. We are very pleased with the new addition."

The new facility derives its distinctive name from the church's avowed aim to "Refine young children into adulthood." Reported budget for the recently-added audio, video and lighting system was close $2 million.

UK - DiGiCo has introduced the EX-007, designed to substantially increase the number of available faders and the number of channels controllable at any one time on an SD7 - and from a distance of up to 100m via a cost-effective Cat 5 cable connection.

It is possible to augment an SD7 with two EX-007s, each acting as control panel to provide 24 faders and two additional touch screens, as well as metering and other standard functions, transforming the already impressive SD7 into a 100-fader mixing console. The EX-007 networks to the SD7, has its own power supply and its own PC.

"The EX-007 has many applications," says DiGiCo managing director, James Gordon. "For touring, there's the obvious advantage of more faders and the ability to control everything that's on the main desk from multiple locations - ideal for shows where a number of mix positions are required be

Germany - The B4-SUB realises d&b audiotechnik's patented design of a cardioids technique using only one amplifier channel following on from the introduction of CSA (cardioid subwoofer array) techniques to their products early in 2004. Then the approach used a combination of stacking standard loudspeakers with specific amplifier configurations which proved both effective and consistent and was followed by the introduction of both the J-SUB and J-INFRA cardioid subwoofers using front and rear radiating drivers powered by separate amplifier channels. In 2008 d&b perfected and patented the 'Loudspeaker system with reduced rear sound radiation' which in turn led to the development of the B4 subwoofer.

The B4-SUB enclosure houses two long excursion neodymium drivers: a 15" driver in bass-reflex design facing to the front and a 12" driver in a two chamber bandpass design rad

UK - Lisburn-based Zest Audio has recently completed the installation of a high power Community sound system for the demonstration facilities of Lightstep Technologies at their Belfast headquarters. Lightstep produces innovative products to help people escape from life threatening situations.

Following many well publicised disasters in recent years, involving major loss of life in high rise buildings, nightclubs, underground stations and at sea, Lightstep has developed systems that represent a significant step forward in life safety systems.

Much has been done to improve and coordinate the response and ability of the fire, ambulance, police and other emergency services but, until now, little progress has been made in developing integrated visual systems to increase the chances of escape from burning buildings, gas leaks, underground black outs, explosions on land or at sea, ca

Germany - One of Europe's largest festivals for jazz, soul, and pop rock music, BW-Bank jazzopen stuttgart 2009 recently concluded after 11 days of live concerts, featuring Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Sonny Rollins, and a special presentation of Katie Melua with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra.

The largest concerts this year were moved indoors to the new Stuttgart fairgrounds, with Meyer Sound systems providing sound reinforcement for the first time.

The transition to Stuttgart fairgrounds offered a convenient location for the 28,000 visitors, and gave the performers a more stable environment despite Germany's unpredictable summer weather conditions. "With this new venue, we opened a new page in the festival's history and it was important for us to also move sound to a new level," says promoter Jürgen Schlensog. "And this year, we successfully achie

UK - Red Square Audio's Paul Nicholson became the first person in the UK to purchase the brand new NTi Audio XL2 Audio and Acoustic Analyzer system when he made the deal at PLASA09 in London in September. UK - Green Day's ongoing world tour in support of its latest album, 21st Century Breakdown, has its monitors mixed on Studer Vista 5 SR digital mixing console. It was the first choice for monitor mixer Beau Alexander, who has worked with the multi-platinum Green Day since 2004's American Idiot world tour.

Alexander, who has also mixed for artists including Tool, Hootie and The Blowfish and My Chemical Romance, says the Vista 5 is an excellent fit with the Green Day tour. "What makes it a great fit for Green Day is the number of outputs it has," he says.

"When we started the 21st Century Breakdown record cycle, I didn't know if we were going to be using in-ears or wedges for monitoring, so I had to set the desk up for both, and when I did that I was using somewhere around 40 outputs, which the Vista 5 can easily handle."

UK - After a five-year hiatus, the long-running quartet Phish reformed earlier this year, culminating in a new release Joy and subsequent 27-date national tour including headline spots at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a four-night run at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver.

During the first leg of the tour, FOH engineer, Garry Brown made the decision to switch mid-stream to a DiGiCo SD7. And after a laborious and exhaustive A/B comparison of his current console and the SD7, the decision was made. Aside from a brief outing with the band Third Day in 2004 on a DiGiCo D5, this was Brown's first extensive hands-on experience with a DiGiCo console.

"During the first leg of the tour, we had been using another digital console, which in the context of the live sound of the shows had not been an issue. We came to realize that the board tapes that were released for downloads

USA - The Howard Community College's Smith Theatre in Columbia, Maryland, has installed an Allen & Heath iLive digital mixing system, comprising an iDR10 MixRack and iLive-112 Control Surface, as the control centre for a new PA system.

UK - The Ulster Hall, a concert hall and listed building in the city centre of Belfast, has been equipped with a new Electro-Voice XLD line-array PA system by Park Audio Productions, after winning a multi-way tender from companies all over the UK and Ireland.

In 2007, an £8.5 million modernising refit was completed. In 2009, Belfast City Council supervised the selection and installation of a line-array sound reinforcement system, cleverly specifying a level of portability within the design so that elements of the system could 'float' between Ulster Hall and its sister venue, the Waterfront Hall.

A lengthy tendering process culminated in the contract being awarded to Belfast sound rental and installation company Park Audio, regular suppliers to the Waterfront Hall. "At the Waterfront, we've successfully hired in Electro-Voice systems for all sorts of shows, and I've
