This special event featured the Russian national orchestra and leading singers Anna Netrebko, Paata Burchuladze, Julia Gertseva and Sergey Skorokhodov, who performed Russian classical music by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, Glinka, Bortniansky, Prokofiev and Kastalsky.

Two hangs of 12 Kudo line source array cabinets were used for the main sound system, with two stacks of Kiva ultra compact line source array units and Kilo low frequency extensions for side coverage. In addition, the Danish manufacturer also presented Martin Goosen, from Dutch distributor Amptec, with a special Lifetime Achievement Award.

Portugal - Top Portuguese artist Mariza has embarked on the worldwide Terra tour, named after her recent album. Returning to Portugal for a number of concerts, the singer made her entrance in Cascais on a sailing boat. This show marked the first time that Mariza's sound engineer, João Cebolas, worked with a Midas PRO6 live audio system. It was provided by local rental company Audiomatrix for all the Portuguese dates, having been recommended by the company's owner Jorge Pina.

Cebolas was only able to try the PRO6 for the first time the day before the show. "It's an intuitive system, with a magnificent work surface where all the pots, buttons and colours are revealed very distinctly, and everything is just a touch away," says Cebolas. The 2009 season saw Battle Proms take in six concerts in July and August, with Yamaha Commercial Audio's digital systems manager Nick 'Biggles' Pemberton mixing the shows on an LS9-16 console with an SB168-ES digital stage box.

Audio supplier for the shows was Luton-based Concert Sound Clair, who supplied an EAW/Clair Bros/Showco front of house system, together with Schoeps microphones to get the best of the orchestral sound.

World Cup Concert - A major concert has been announced to kick off the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The three-hour show will feature collaborations between international stars and top African artists and appearances by football legends. The event, from the team behind Live 8, takes place on 10 June at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg.

The show is being staged by Kevin Wall, who told BBC News he has been "overwhelmed" by major artists wanting to get involved. "That's unusual, normally it's the other way round," he added. He admitted he will have to turn down some big name acts: "We are going to have a lot of the major African artists and really it's going to be about Africa so the slots for international artists are a rarity."

Italy - Located within a deconsecrated 18th Century Florence church, the idea behind the €3m Cavalli Club has been described its by owner, Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, as "to let others into my world".

Featuring a bar/restaurant and live entertainment, the club measures around 22m long by seven wide. As the building is listed and nothing was allowed to touch the walls of the old church, architect Italo Rota built the club within a freestanding iron structure. The main bar and circulation area is downstairs, with a smaller first floor dining area above part of the main space.

Hungary - Pro audio sales, rental and distribution specialist Votec has become the first European rental company to stock the new Renkus-Heinz VerSys VLX3 externally powered high power, large format line array system.

The company, established in 1996 by owner Sándor Elek, which has used Renkus-Heinz loudspeaker systems in Hungary for many years alongside Trantec and Accusound, took delivery of its system last month. The firm has grown in size to 20 employees and is expanding its client base in live music, theatre and television.

"We have worked with Renkus-Heinz system to establish the brand in Hungary," commented Elek. "We began with rental basically and after a year or two sold some systems to theatres. We also started working with pop bands and with television, and became involved with the regular two-month-long series of summer concerts at the Dom Square

Italy - Trescore's music festival is one Italy's largest summer events held in the city of Bergamo, in the north of the country.

The event attracted tens of thousands of people who gathered to attend the shows at this year's festival where the cast included some of the best bands in the Italian alternative rock scene including, Afterhours, J-Ax, Calibro 35, Le Luci Della Centrale Elettrica, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti and Ministri.
