Germany - Duran Audio has recently released the latest version of its Digital Directivity Analysis software (DDA). DDA was first developed as a tool to allow sound designers to implement Duran Audio's powerful Digital Directivity Synthesis algorithm.

But what is DDS? Back in 2000 Dr Evert Start from Duran Audio published a paper on Digital Directivity Synthesis at the IOA's Reproduced Sound Conference in the UK. DDS is a technology that uses FIR filters to allow sound designers to control both the near field and far field dispersion of a loudspeaker array using a powerful algorithm from Duran Audio called Digital Directivity Synthesis. DDS was immediately implemented in AXYS Target Line Arrays and Intellivox arrays. DDS allowed users to electronically aim the sound where they want it - at the listener and to excite the audience and not the room. 13 years on Duran Audio continue

Germany - Fohhn Audio previews its latest technological development in digital compact, active, networkable audio systems at Prolight + Sound in Frankfurt this week. Fohhn Intelligent Audio Distribution (FIAD) has been specially developed as a result of demands for increasingly compact, lightweight yet powerful active loudspeaker systems. As technology constantly evolves, products are becoming both smaller and more powerful. Flexibility is also key, as is the need for optimal use of resources.

With this in mind, the challenge facing Fohhn engineers has been how to successfully integrate two speakers, an amplifier, power supply, DSP processors and three connectors for power, audio and networking into increasingly compact loudspeaker housing, without compromising on performance or quality.

The additional expense and aesthetic problems resulting from having to fit three different

UK - As part of LOCOG's Supplier Recognition Scheme, Maltbury Staging has been recognised as Supplier of modular staging solutions (ExCeL) to the London 2012 Games.

"Actually," says Philip Sparkes, Maltbury's MD "this description tells only a small part of the story of Maltbury's involvement in the Games. We started with one contract and ended up supplying goods or services to half of the Olympic sports!"

Maltbury's story began with winning the tender for the contract to supply the stage and back wall for the Weightlifting competition. There was no technical specification for the platform so they first had to design the platform that LOCOG and the Olympic Weightlifting team wanted and then prove that they could deliver it. The same applied to the back wall, which gradually changed from a simple series of tall flats into a monolithic structure of almost 200m

USA - When top production designer Baz Halpin walked past the SGM booth at the LDI Show in Las Vegas last November he was stopped in his tracks by the Danish company's new XC-5 colour strobes.

Responding to an invitation from the lighting manufacturer's US head, Randy Wade, he and Chris Nyfield, along with other members of the Silent House Productions team would probably have given little more than a cursory glance, as seeking out new strobes was probably furthest from their mind. "I was actually quite happy with the strobes we had been using - but as we walked past the SGM booth we were really taken by the strobes.

"I instantly loved the quality of the colours, the intensity, size and the low power consumption ... not to mention that the fixture could be more versatile than just a strobe," remarked the Irish born designer.
